Gapped boundaries and string-like excitations in (3+1)d gauge models of topological phases

We study lattice Hamiltonian realisations of (3+1)d Dijkgraaf-Witten theory with gapped boundaries. In addition to the bulk loop-like excitations, the Hamiltonian yields bulk dyonic string-like excitations that terminate at gapped boundaries. Using a tube algebra approach, we classify such excitations and derive the corresponding representation theory. Via a dimensional reduction argument, we relate this tube algebra to that describing (2+1)d boundary point-like excitations at interfaces between two gapped boundaries. Such point-like excitations are well known to be encoded into a bicategory of module categories over the input fusion category. Exploiting this correspondence, we define a bicategory that encodes the string-like excitations ending at gapped boundaries, showing that it is a sub-bicategory of the centre of the input bicategory of group-graded 2-vector spaces. In the process, we explain how gapped boundaries in (3+1)d can be labelled by so-called pseudo-algebra objects over this input bicategory.

Crossing with the circle in Dijkgraaf-Witten theory and applications to topological phases of matter

Given a fully extended topological quantum field theory, the 'crossing with the circle' conditions establish that the dimension, or categorification thereof, of the quantum invariant assigned to a closed $k$-manifold $Σ$ is equivalent to that assigned to the ($k$+1)-manifold $Σ\times \mathbb S^1$. We compute in this manuscript these conditions for the 4-3-2-1 Dijkgraaf-Witten theory. In the context of the lattice Hamiltonian realisation of the theory, the quantum invariants assigned to the circle and the torus encode the defect open string-like and bulk loop-like excitations, respectively. The corresponding 'crossing with the circle' condition thus formalises the process by which loop-like excitations are formed out of string-like ones. Exploiting this result, we revisit the statement that loop-like excitations define representations of the linear necklace group as well as the loop braid group.

Excitations in strict 2-group higher gauge models of topological phases

We consider an exactly solvable model for topological phases in (3+1)d whose input data is a strict 2-group. This model, which has a higher gauge theory interpretation, provides a lattice Hamiltonian realisation of the Yetter homotopy 2-type topological quantum field theory. The Hamiltonian yields bulk flux and charge composite excitations that are either point-like or loop-like. Applying a generalised tube algebra approach, we reveal the algebraic structure underlying these excitations and derive the irreducible modules of this algebra, which in turn classify the elementary excitations of the model. As a further application of the tube algebra approach, we demonstrate that the ground state subspace of the three-torus is described by the central subalgebra of the tube algebra for torus boundary, demonstrating the ground state degeneracy is given by the number of elementary loop-like excitations.

Tube algebras, excitations statistics and compactification in gauge models of topological phases

We consider lattice Hamiltonian realizations of ($d$+1)-dimensional Dijkgraaf-Witten theory. In (2+1)d, it is well-known that the Hamiltonian yields point-like excitations classified by irreducible representations of the twisted quantum double. This can be confirmed using a tube algebra approach. In this paper, we propose a generalization of this strategy that is valid in any dimensions. We then apply the tube algebra approach to derive the algebraic structure of loop-like excitations in (3+1)d, namely the twisted quantum triple. The irreducible representations of the twisted quantum triple algebra correspond to the simple loop-like excitations of the model. Similarly to its (2+1)d counterpart, the twisted quantum triple comes equipped with a compatible comultiplication map and an $R$-matrix that encode the fusion and the braiding statistics of the loop-like excitations, respectively. Moreover, we explain using the language of loop-groupoids how a model defined on a manifold that is $n$-times compactified can be expressed in terms of another model in $n$-lower dimensions. This can in turn be used to recast higher-dimensional tube algebras in terms of lower dimensional analogues.

Representations of the Loop Braid Group and Aharonov-Bohm like effects in discrete (3+1)-dimensional higher gauge theory

We show that representations of the loop braid group arise from Aharonov-Bohm like effects in finite 2-group (3+1)-dimensional topological higher gauge theory. For this we introduce a minimal categorification of biracks, which we call W-bikoids (welded bikoids). Our main example of W-bikoids arises from finite 2-groups, realised as crossed modules of groups. Given a W-bikoid, and hence a groupoid of symmetries, we construct a family of unitary representations of the loop braid group derived from representations of the groupoid algebra. We thus give a candidate for higher Bais' flux metamorphosis, and hence also a version of a `higher quantum group'.

Representations of the Necklace Braid Group: Topological and Combinatorial Approaches

The necklace braid group $\mathcal{NB}_n$ is the motion group of the $n+1$ component necklace link $\mathcal{L}_n$ in Euclidean $\mathbb{R}^3$. Here $\mathcal{L}_n$ consists of $n$ pairwise unlinked Euclidean circles each linked to an auxiliary circle. Partially motivated by physical considerations, we study representations of the necklace braid group $\mathcal{NB}_n$, especially those obtained as extensions of representations of the braid group $\mathcal{B}_n$ and the loop braid group $\mathcal{LB}_n$. We show that any irreducible $\mathcal{B}_n$ representation extends to $\mathcal{NB}_n$ in a standard way. We also find some non-standard extensions of several well-known $\mathcal{B}_n$-representations such as the Burau and LKB representations. Moreover, we prove that any local representation of $\mathcal{B}_n$ (i.e. coming from a braided vector space) can be extended to $\mathcal{NB}_n$, in contrast to the situation with $\mathcal{LB}_n$. We also discuss some directions for future study from categorical and physical perspectives.

Higher lattices, discrete two-dimensional holonomy and topological phases in (3+1) D with higher gauge symmetry

Higher gauge theory is a higher order version of gauge theory that makes possible the definition of 2-dimensional holonomy along surfaces embedded in a manifold where a gauge 2-connection is present. In this paper, we will continue the study of Hamiltonian models for discrete higher gauge theory on a lattice decomposition of a manifold. In particular, we show that a previously proposed construction for higher lattice gauge theory is well-defined, including in particular a Hamiltonian for topological phases of matter in 3+1 dimensions. Our construction builds upon the Kitaev quantum double model, replacing the finite gauge connection with a finite gauge 2-group 2-connection. Our Hamiltonian higher lattice gauge theory model is defined on spatial manifolds of arbitrary dimension presented by slightly {\it combinatorialised} CW-decompositions (2-lattice decompositions), whose 1-cells and 2-cells carry discrete 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional holonomy data. We prove that the ground-state degeneracy of Hamiltonian higher lattice gauge theory is a topological invariant of manifolds, coinciding with the number of homotopy classes of maps from the manifold to the classifying space of the underlying gauge 2-group. The operators of our Hamiltonian model are closely related to discrete 2-dimensional holonomy operators for discretised 2-connections on manifolds with a 2-lattice decomposition. We therefore address the definition of discrete 2-dimensional holonomy for surfaces embedded in 2-lattices. Several results concerning the well-definedness of discrete 2-dimensional holonomy, and its construction in a combinatorial and algebraic topological setting are presented.

Twisted Quantum Double Model of Topological Orders with Boundaries

We generalize the twisted quantum double model of topological orders in two dimensions to the case with boundaries by systematically constructing the boundary Hamiltonians. Given the bulk Hamiltonian defined by a gauge group $G$ and a three-cocycle in the third cohomology group of $G$ over $U(1)$, a boundary Hamiltonian can be defined by a subgroup $K$ of $G$ and a two-cochain in the second cochain group of $K$ over $U(1)$. The consistency between the bulk and boundary Hamiltonians is dictated by what we call the Frobenius condition that constrains the two-cochain given the three-cocyle. We offer a closed-form formula computing the ground state degeneracy of the model on a cylinder in terms of the input data only, which can be naturally generalized to surfaces with more boundaries. We also explicitly write down the ground-state wavefunction of the model on a disk also in terms of the input data only.

Topological phases from higher gauge symmetry in 3+1D

We propose an exactly solvable Hamiltonian for topological phases in $3+1$ dimensions utilising ideas from higher lattice gauge theory, where the gauge symmetry is given by a finite 2-group. We explicitly show that the model is a Hamiltonian realisation of Yetter's homotopy 2-type topological quantum field theory whereby the groundstate projector of the model defined on the manifold $M^3$ is given by the partition function of the underlying topological quantum field theory for $M^3\times [0,1]$. We show that this result holds in any dimension and illustrate it by computing the ground state degeneracy for a selection of spatial manifolds and 2-groups. As an application we show that a subset of our model is dual to a class of Abelian Walker-Wang models describing $3+1$ dimensional topological insulators.

Entropic Topological Invariants in Three Dimensions

We evaluate the entanglement entropy of exactly solvable Hamiltonians corresponding to general families of three-dimensional topological models. We show that the modification to the entropic area law due to three-dimensional topological properties is richer than the two-dimensional case. In addition to the reduction of the entropy caused by non-zero vacuum expectation value of contractible loop operators a new topological invariant appears that increases the entropy if the model consists of non-trivially braiding anyons. As a result the three-dimensional topological entanglement entropy provides only partial information about the two entropic topological invariants.

Detection of Chern numbers and entanglement in topological two-species systems through subsystem winding numbers

Topological invariants, such as the Chern number, characterise topological phases of matter. Here we provide a method to detect Chern numbers in systems with two distinct species of fermion, such as spins, orbitals or several atomic states. We analytically show that the Chern number can be decomposed as a sum of component specific winding numbers, which are themselves physically observable. We apply this method to two systems, the quantum spin Hall insulator and a staggered topological superconductor, and show that (spin) Chern numbers are accurately reproduced. The measurements required for constructing the component winding numbers also enable one to probe the entanglement spectrum with respect to component partitions. Our method is particularly suited to experiments with cold atoms in optical lattices where time-of-flight images can give direct access to the relevant observables.
