Homogeneous matchbox manifolds

We prove that a homogeneous matchbox manifold of any finite dimension is homeomorphic to a McCord solenoid, thereby proving a strong version of a conjecture of Fokkink and Oversteegen. The proof uses techniques from the theory of foliations that involve making important connections between homogeneity and equicontinuity. The results provide a framework for the study of equicontinuous minimal sets of foliations that have the structure of a matchbox manifold.

Embedding solenoids in foliations

In this paper we find smooth embeddings of solenoids in smooth foliations. We show that if a smooth foliation F of a manifold M contains a compact leaf L with H^1(L;R)= 0 and if the foliation is a product foliation in some saturated open neighbourhood U of L, then there exists a foliation F' on M which is C^1-close to F, and F' has an uncountable set of solenoidal minimal sets contained in U that are pair wise non-homeomorphic. If H^1(L;R) is not 0, then it is known that any sufficiently small perturbation of F contains a saturated product neighbourhood. Thus, our result can be thought of as an instability result complementing the stability results of Reeb, Thurston and Langevin and Rosenberg.

Intrinsically narrowband pair photon generation in microstructured fibres

In this paper we study the tailoring of photon spectral properties generated by four-wave mixing in a birefringent photonic crystal fibre (PCF). The aim is to produce intrinsically narrow-band photons and hence to achieve high non-classical interference visibility and generate high fidelity entanglement without any requirement for spectral filtering, leading to high effective detection efficiencies. We show unfiltered Hong-Ou-Mandel interference visibilities of 77% between photons from the same PCF, and 80% between separate sources. We compare results from modelling the PCF to these experiments and analyse photon purities.

Nonclassical 2-photon interference with separate intrinsically narrowband fibre sources

In this paper, we demonstrate a source of photon pairs based on four-wave-mixing in photonic crystal fibres. Careful engineering of the phase matching conditions in the fibres enables us to create photon pairs at 597 nm and 860 nm in an intrinsically factorable state showing no spectral correlations. This allows for heralding one photon in a pure state and hence renders narrow band filtering obsolete. The source is narrow band, bright and achieves an overall detection efficiency of up to 21% per photon. For the first time, a Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with unfiltered photons from separate fibre sources is presented.

Rhombus Filtrations and Rauzy Algebras

Peach introduced rhombal algebras associated to quivers given by tilings of the plane by rhombi. We develop general techniques to analyse rhombal algebras, including a filtration by what we call rhombus modules. We introduce a way to relate the infinite-dimensional rhombal algebra corresponding to a complete tiling of the plane to finite-dimensional algebras corresponding to finite portions of the tiling. Throughout, we apply our general techniques to the special case of the Rauzy tiling, which is built in stages reflecting an underlying self-similarity. Exploiting this self-similar structure allows us to uncover interesting features of the associated finite-dimensional algebras, including some of the tree classes in the stable Auslander-Reiten quiver.

Self Duality and Codings for Expansive Group Automorphisms

Lind and Schmidt have shown that the homoclinic group of a cyclic $\Z^k$ algebraic dynamical system is isomorphic to the dual of the phase group. We show that this duality result is part of an exact sequence if $k=1$. The exact sequence is a well known algebraic object, which has been applied by Schmidt in his work on rigidity. We show that it can be derived from dynamical considerations only. The constructions naturally lead to an almost 1-1-coding of certain Pisot automorphisms by their associated $β$-shift, generalizing similar results for Pisot automorphisms of the torus.

Bihomogeneity of solenoids

Solenoids are inverse limit spaces over regular covering maps of closed manifolds. M.C. McCord has shown that solenoids are topologically homogeneous and that they are principal bundles with a profinite structure group. We show that if a solenoid is bihomogeneous, then its structure group contains an open abelian subgroup. This leads to new examples of homogeneous continua that are not bihomogeneous.

The Rotation Class of a Flow

Generalizing a construction of A. Weil, we introduce a topological invariant for flows on compact, connected, finite dimensional, abelian, topological groups. We calculate this invariant for some examples and compare the invariant with other flow invariants.

A generalization of Hagopian's theorem and exponents

We generalize Hagopian's theorem characterizing solenoids to higher dimensions by showing that any homogeneous continuum admitting a fiber bundle projection onto a torus with totally disconnected fibers admits a compatible abelian topological group structure. The higher dimensional exponent group is then introduced.

Exponents and Almost Periodic Orbits

We introduce the group of exponents of a map of the reals into a metric space and give conditions under which this group embeds in the first Cech cohomology group of the closure of the image of the map. We show that this group generalizes the subgroup of the reals generated by the Fourier-Bohr exponents of an almost periodic orbit and that any minimal almost periodic flow in a complete metric space is determined up to (topological) equivalence by this group. We also develop a way of associating groups with any self-homeomorphism of a metric space that generalizes the rotation number of an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of the circle with irrational rotation number.

Linear Flows on $κ$-Solenoids

Linear flows on inverse limits of tori are defined and it is shown that two linear flows on an inverse limit of tori are equivalent if and only if there is an automorphism of the inverse limit generating the equivalence.

Flows on solenoids are generically not almost periodic

The space of non-singular flows on any given solenoid is shown to contain a generic subset consisting of flows that are not almost periodic. Whether this result carries over to Hamiltonian flows remains an open question.
