Lorentz violating extension of the Standard Model and the Beta-decay end-point

The Standard Model extension with additional Lorentz violating terms allows for redefining the equation of motion of a propagating left-handed fermionic particle. The obtained Dirac-type equation can be embedded in a generalized Lorentz-invariance preserving-algebra through the definition of Lorentz algebra-like generators with a light-like preferred axis. The resulting modification to the fermionic equation of motion introduces some novel ingredients to the phenomenological analysis of the cross section of the tritium $β$-decay. Assuming lepton number conservation, our formalism provides a natural explanation for the tritium $β$-decay end-point via an effective neutrino mass term without the need of a sterile right-handed state.

Delay Times for Symmetrized and Antisymmetrized Quantum Tunneling Configurations

The transit times are obtained for a symmetrized (two identical bosons) and an antisymmetrized (two identical fermions) quantum colliding configuration. Considering two identical particles symmetrically impinging on a one-dimensional barrier, we demonstrate that the phase time and the dwell time give connected results where, however, the exact position of the scattered particles is explicitly determined by the phase time (group delay). For the antisymmetrized wave function configuration, an unusual effect of {\em accelerated} transmission is clearly identified in a simultaneous tunneling of two identical fermions.

Relation between phase and dwell times for quantum tunneling of a relativistically propagating particle

The general and explicit relation between the phase time and the dwell time for quantum tunneling of a relativistically propagating particle is investigated and quantified. In analogy with previously obtained non-relativistic results, it is shown that the group delay can be described in terms of the dwell time and a self-interference delay. Lessons concerning the phenomenology of the relativistic tunneling are drawn.

Delay time computation for relativistic tunneling particles

We study the tunneling zone solutions of a one-dimensional electrostatic potential for the relativistic (Dirac to Klein-Gordon) wave equation when the incoming wave packet exhibits the possibility of being almost totally transmitted through the barrier. The transmission probabilities, the phase times and the dwell times for the proposed relativistic dynamics are obtained and the conditions for the occurrence of accelerated tunneling transmission are all quantified. We show that, in some limiting cases, the analytical difficulties that arise when the stationary phase method is employed for obtaining phase (traversal) tunneling times are all overcome. Lessons concerning the phenomenology of the relativistic tunneling suggest revealing insights into condensed-matter experiments using electrostatic barriers for which the accelerated tunneling effect can be observed.

Dirac neutrino mass from the beta decay end-point modified by the dynamics of a Lorentz-violating equation of motion

Using a generalized procedure for obtaining the equation of motion of a propagating fermionic particle, we examine previous claims for a lightlike preferred axis embedded in the framework of Lorentz-invariance violation with preserved algebra. In a high energy scale, the corresponding equation of motion is reduced to a conserving lepton number chiral (VSR) equation, and in a low energy scale, the Dirac equation for a free is recovered. The new dynamics introduces some novel ingredients (modified cross section) to the phenomenology of the tritium beta decay end-point.

Recovering the stationary phase condition for accurately obtaining scattering and tunneling times

The stationary phase method is often employed for computing tunneling {\em phase} times of analytically-continuous {\em gaussian} or infinite-bandwidth step pulses which collide with a potential barrier. The indiscriminate utilization of this method without considering the barrier boundary effects leads to some misconceptions in the interpretation of the phase times. After reexamining the above barrier diffusion problem where we notice the wave packet collision necessarily leads to the possibility of multiple reflected and transmitted wave packets, we study the phase times for tunneling/reflecting particles in a framework where an idea of multiple wave packet decomposition is recovered. To partially overcome the analytical incongruities which rise up when tunneling phase time expressions are obtained, we present a theoretical exercise involving a symmetrical collision between two identical wave packets and a one dimensional squared potential barrier where the scattered wave packets can be recomposed by summing the amplitudes of simultaneously reflected and transmitted waves.

Obtaining the Gauge Invariant Kinetic Term for a SU(n)$_U$ x SU(m)$_V$ Lagrangian

We propose a generalized way to formally obtain the gauge invariance of the kinetic part of a field Lagrangian over which a gauge transformation ruled by an $SU(n)_{U} \otimes SU(m)_{V}$ coupling symmetry is applied. As an illustrative example, we employ such a formal construction for reproducing the standard model Lagrangian. This generalized formulation is supposed to contribute for initiating the study of gauge transformation applied to generalized $SU(n)_{U} \otimes SU(m)_{V}$ symmetries as well as for complementing an introductory study of the standard model of elementary particles.

The Exact Correspondence between Phase Times and Dwell Times in a Symmetrical Quantum Tunneling Configuration

The general and explicit relation between the phase time and the dwell time for quantum tunneling or scattering is investigated. Considering a symmetrical collision of two identical wave packets with an one-dimensional barrier, here we demonstrate that these two distinct transit time definitions give connected results where, however, the phase time (group delay) accurately describes the exact position of the scattered particles. The analytical difficulties that arise when the stationary phase method is employed for obtaining phase (traversal) times are all overcome. Multiple wave packet decomposition allows us to recover the exact position of the reflected and transmitted waves in terms of the phase time, which, in addition to the exact relation between the phase time and the dwell time, leads to right interpretation for both of them.

Theoretical correlation between possible evidences of neutrino chiral oscillations and polarization measurements

Reporting about the formalism with the Dirac equation we describe the dynamics of chiral oscillations for a fermionic particle non-minimally coupling with an external magnetic field. For massive particles, the chirality and helicity quantum numbers represent different physical quantities of representative importance in the study of chiral interactions, in particular, in the context of neutrino physics. After solving the interacting Hamiltonian (Dirac) equation for the corresponding {\em fermionic} Dirac-{\em type} particle (neutrino) and quantifying chiral oscillations in the Dirac wave packet framework, we avail the possibility of determining realistic neutrino chirality conversion rates by means of (helicity) polarization measurements. We notice that it can become feasible for some particular magnetic field configurations with large values of {\boldmath$B$} orthogonal to the direction of the propagating particle.

Influence of second-order corrections to the energy-dependence of neutrino flavor conversion formulae

We discuss the {\em intermediate} wave-packet formalism for analytically quantifying the energy dependence of the two-flavor conversion formula that is usually considered for analyzing neutrino oscillations and adjusting the focusing horn, target position and/or detector location of some flavor conversion experiments. Following a sequence of analytical approximations where we consider the second-order corrections in a power series expansion of the energy, we point out a {\em residual} time-dependent phase which, in addition to some well known wave-packet effects, can subtly modify the oscillation parameters and limits. In the present precision era of neutrino oscillation experiments where higher precision measurements are required, we quantify some small corrections in neutrino flavor conversion formulae which lead to a modified energy-dependence for $ν_μ\leftrightarrowν_{e}$ oscillations.

Obtaining the equation of motion for a fermionic particle in a generalized Lorentz-violating system framework

Using a generalized procedure for obtaining the dispersion relation and the equation of motion for a propagating fermionic particle, we examine previous claims for a preferred axis at $n_μ$($\equiv(1,0,0,1)$), $n^{2}=0$ embedded in the framework of very special relativity (VSR). We show that, in a relatively high energy scale, the corresponding equation of motion is reduced to a conserving lepton number chiral equation previously predicted in the literature. Otherwise, in a relatively low energy scale, the equation is reduced to the usual Dirac equation for a free propagating fermionic particle. It is accomplished by the suggestive analysis of some special cases where a nonlinear modification of the action of the Lorentz group is generated by the addition of a modified conformal transformation which, meanwhile, preserves the structure of the ordinary Lorentz algebra in a very peculiar way. Some feasible experiments, for which Lorentz violating effects here pointed out may be detectable, are suggested.

The coupling constants for an electroweak model with a $SU(4)_{PS} \otimes SU(4)_{EW}$ unification symmetry

We introduce the sequence of spontaneous symmetry breaking of a coupling between Pati-Salam and electroweak symmetries $SU(4)_{PS} \otimes SU(4)_{EW}$ in order to establish a mathematically consistent relation among the coupling constants at grand unification energy scale. With the values of baryon minus lepton quantum numbers of known quarks and leptons, by including right-handed neutrinos, we can find the mixing angle relations at different energy levels up to the electromagnetic $U(1)_{EM}$ scale.

Small Corrections to the Tunneling Phase Time Formulation

After reexamining the above barrier diffusion problem where we notice that the wave packet collision implies the existence of {\em multiple} reflected and transmitted wave packets, we analyze the way of obtaining phase times for tunneling/reflecting particles in a particular colliding configuration where the idea of multiple peak decomposition is recovered. To partially overcome the analytical incongruities which frequently rise up when the stationary phase method is adopted for computing the (tunneling) phase time expressions, we present a theoretical exercise involving a symmetrical collision between two identical wave packets and a unidimensional squared potential barrier where the scattered wave packets can be recomposed by summing the amplitudes of simultaneously reflected and transmitted wave components so that the conditions for applying the stationary phase principle are totally recovered. Lessons concerning the use of the stationary phase method are drawn.

Lorentz-violating dilatations in the momentum space and some extensions on non-linear actions of Lorentz algebra-preserving systems

We work on some general extensions of the formalism for theories which preserve the relativity of inertial frames with a nonlinear action of the Lorentz transformations on momentum space. Relativistic particle models invariant under the corresponding deformed symmetries are presented with particular emphasis on deformed dilatation transformations. The algebraic transformations relating the deformed symmetries with the usual (undeformed) ones are provided in order to preserve the Lorentz algebra. Two distinct cases are considered: a deformed dilatation transformation with a spacelike preferred direction and a very special relativity embedding with a lightlike preferred direction. In both analysis we consider the possibility of introducing quantum deformations of the corresponding symmetries such that the spacetime coordinates can be reconstructed and the particular form of the real space-momentum commutator remains covariant. Eventually feasible experiments, for which Lorentz violating effects here pointed out may be detectable, are suggested.

Limitations on the principle of stationary phase when it is applied to tunneling analysis

Using a recently developed procedure - multiple wave packet decomposition - here we study the phase time formulation for tunneling/reflecting particles colliding with a potential barrier. To partially overcome the analytical difficulties which frequently arise when the stationary phase method is employed for deriving phase (tunneling) time expressions, we present a theoretical exercise involving a symmetrical collision between two identical wave packets and an one-dimensional rectangular potential barrier. Summing the amplitudes of the reflected and transmitted waves - using a method we call multiple peak decomposition - is shown to allow reconstruction of the scattered wave packets in a way which allows the stationary phase principle to be recovered.

Second-order corrections to neutrino two-flavor oscillation parameters in the wave packet approach

We report about an analytic study involving the {\em intermediate} wave packet formalism for quantifying the physically relevant information which appear in the neutrino two-flavor conversion formula and help us to obtain more precise limits and ranges for neutrino flavor oscillation. By following the sequence of analytic approximations where we assume a strictly peaked momentum distribution and consider the second-order corrections in a power series expansion of the energy, we point out a {\em residual} time-dependent phase which, coupled with the {\em spreading/slippage} effects, can subtly modify the neutrino oscillation parameters and limits. Such second-order effects are usually ignored in the relativistic wave packet treatment, but they present an evident dependence on the propagation regime so that some small modifications to the oscillation pattern, even in the ultra-relativistic limit, can be quantified. These modifications are implemented in the confront with the neutrino oscillation parameter range (mass-squared difference $Δm^{\2}$ and the mixing-angle $θ$) where we assume the same wave packet parameters previously noticed in the literature in a kind of {\em toy model} for some reactor experiments. Generically speaking, our analysis parallels the recent experimental purposes which concern with higher precision parameter measurements. To summarize, we show that the effectiveness of a more accurate determination of $Δm^{\2}$ and $θ$ depends on the wave packet width $a$ and on the averaged propagating energy flux $\bar{E}$ which still correspond to open variables for some classes of experiments. \

The construction of Dirac wave packets for a fermionic particle non-minimally coupling with an external magnetic field

We shall proceed with the construction of normalizable Dirac wave packets for {\em fermionic} particles (neutrinos) with dynamics governed by a ``modified'' Dirac equation with a non-minimal coupling with an external magnetic field. We are not only interested on the analytic solutions of the ``modified'' Dirac wave equation but also on the construction of Dirac wave packets which can be used for describing the dynamics of some observable physical quantities which are relevant in the context of the quantum oscillation phenomena. To conclude, we discuss qualitatively the applicability of this formal construction in the treatment of chiral (and flavor) oscillations in the theoretical context of neutrino physics.

The gauge boson masses for a minimal $SU(4)_{EW} \otimes U(1)_{B-l}$ model for electroweak interactions with left-right symmetry

Gauge boson masses for a minimal $SU(4)_{EW} \otimes U(1)_{B-l}$ model]{Following the general procedure of spontaneous symmetry breaking of a $SU(4)_{EW} \otimes U(1)_{B-l}$ electroweak gauge group with left-right symmetry, we obtain the gauge boson masses and currents for the minimal version of the model. The physical eigenstates for neutral gauge bosons are determined by introducing two mixing angles $θ_4$ and $θ_3$ which are related to the electroweak mixing angle $θ_w$ at the unification scale. By introducing some physical approaches in order to simplify the calculations, we calculate the charged and neutral currents. Differently from other previous propositions, the results are obtained from a theoretical constraint upon the coupling constants as a consequence of embedding the symmetry into the Pati-Salam electroweak coupling $SU(4)_{EW} \otimes SU(4)_{PS}$.
