Intermediate Scale Accidental Axion and ALPs

We discuss the problem of constructing models containing an axion and axion-like particles, motivated by astrophysical observations, with decay constants at the intermediate scale ranging from $10^9$GeV to $10^{13}$GeV. We present examples in which the axion and axion-like particles arise accidentally as pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons of automatic global chiral symmetries, in models having exact discrete symmetries.

The Left-Right SU(3)(L)xSU(3)(R)xU(1)(X) Model with Light, keV and Heavy Neutrinos

We construct a full left-right model for the electroweak interactions based on the $SU(3)_{L}\otimes SU(3)_{R}\otimes U(1)_{X}$ gauge symmetry. The fermion content of the model is such that anomaly cancellation restricts the number of families to be a multiple of three. One of the most important features of the model is the joint presence of three light active neutrinos, three additional neutrinos at keV mass scale, and six heavy ones with masses around\textbf{$10^{11}$} GeV. They form a well-motivated part of the spectrum in the sense they address challenging problems related to neutrino oscillation, warm dark matter, and baryogenesis through leptogenesis.

Stabilization of the Electroweak Scale in 3-3-1 Models

One way of avoiding the destabilization of the electroweak scale through a strong coupled regime naturally occurs in models with a Landau-like pole at the TeV scale. Hence, the quadratic divergence contributions to the scalar masses are not considered as a problem anymore since a new nonperturbative dynamic emerges at the TeV scale. This scale should be an intrinsic feature of the models and there is no need to invoke any other sort of protection for the electroweak scale. In some models based on the $SU(3)_C\otimes SU(3)_W\otimes U(1)_{X}$ gauge symmetry, a nonperturbative dynamics arise and it stabilizes the electroweak scale.

Bounds on the Simplest Little Higgs Model Mass Spectrum Through Z Leptonic Decay

We derive the leptonic neutral current in the simplest little Higgs model and compute the contribution of the model to the decay width $Z \to e^+e^-$. Using the precision electroweak data we obtain a strong lower bound $f\geq 5.6$ TeV at 95% C.L. on the characteristic energy scale of the model. It results in a lower bound for the new gauge bosons $W^{\prime\pm}$ and $Z^{\prime}$ as being $M_{W^{\prime\pm}}\geq 2.6$ TeV and $M_{Z^{\prime}}\geq 3.1$ TeV, respectively. We also present the allowed values of the $k=f_1/f_2$ which is the parameter relating the two vacuum expectation values of the scalar triplets in the model, and the $μ$ parameter of a quadratic term, involving the triplets, necessary to provide an acceptable mass range for the standard Higgs boson.

An SU(5)$\otimes$Z_{13} Grand Unification Model

We propose an SU(5) grand unified model with an invisible axion and the unification of the three coupling constants which is in agreement with the values, at $M_Z$, of $α$, $α_s$, and $\sin^2θ_W$. A discrete, anomalous, $Z_{13}$ symmetry implies that the Peccei-Quinn symmetry is an automatic symmetry of the classical Lagrangian protecting, at the same time, the invisible axion against possible semi-classical gravity effects. Although the unification scale is of the order of the Peccei-Quinn scale the proton is stabilized by the fact that in this model the standard model fields form the SU(5) multiplets completed by new exotic fields and, also, because it is protected by the $Z_{13}$ symmetry.

3-3-1 Models at Electroweak Scale

We show that in 3-3-1 models there exist a natural relation among the $SU(3)_L$ coupling constant $g$, the electroweak mixing angle $θ_W$, the mass of the $W$, and one of the vacuum expectation values, which implies that those models can be realized at low energy scales and, in particular, even at the electroweak scale. So that, being that symmetries realized in Nature, new physics may be really just around the corner.

The Invisible Axion and Neutrino Masses

We show that in any invisible axion model due to the effects of effective non-renormalizable interactions related to an energy scale near the Peccei-Quinn, grand unification or even the Planck scale, active neutrinos necessarily acquire masses in the sub-eV range. Moreover, if sterile neutrinos are also included and if appropriate cyclic $Z_N$ symmetries are imposed, it is possible that some of these neutrinos are heavy while others are light.

Naturally light right-handed neutrinos in a 3-3-1 Model

In this work we show that light right-handed neutrinos, with mass in the sub-eV scale, is a natural outcome in a 3-3-1 model. By considering effective dimension five operators, the model predicts three light right-handed neutrinos, weakly mixed with the left-handed ones. We show also that the model is able to explain the LSND experiment and still be in agreement with solar and atmospheric data for neutrino oscillation.

Neutrino Decay and Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in a 3-3-1 Model

In this work we show that the implementation of spontaneous breaking of the lepton number in the 3-3-1 model with right-handed neutrinos gives rise to fast neutrino decay with majoron emission and generates a bunch of new contributions to the neutrinoless double beta decay.

Dynamically Induced Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in 3-3-1 Models

We show that in SU(3)_C X SU(3)_L X U(1)_N (3-3-1) models embedded with a singlet scalar playing the role of the axion, after imposing scale invariance, dynamical symmetry breaking of Peccei-Quinn symmetry occurs through the one-loop effective potential for the singlet field. We, then, analyze the structure of spontaneous symmetry breaking by studying the new scalar potential for the model, and verify that electroweak symmetry breaking is tightly connected to the 3-3-1 breaking by the strong constraints among their vacuum expectation values. This offers a valuable guide to write down the correct pattern of symmetry breaking for multi-scalar theories. We also obtained that the accompanying massive pseudo-scalar, instead of acquiring mass of order of Peccei-Quinn scale as we would expect, develops a mass at a much lower scale, a consequence solely of the dynamical breaking.

Evading the Few TeV Perturbative Limit in 3-3-1 Models

Some versions of the electroweak SU(3)$_L\otimesU(1)_X$ models cannot be treated within perturbation theory at energies of few TeV. An extended version for these models is proposed which is perturbative even at TeV scale posing no threatening inconsistency for test at future colliders. The extension presented here needs the addition of three octets of vector leptons, which leave three new leptonic isotriplets in the SU(2)$_L\otimesU(1)_Y$ subgroup. With this representation content the running of the electroweak mixing angle, $θ_W (μ)$, is such that $\sin^2θ_W(μ)$ decreases with the increase of the energy scale $μ$, when only the light states of the Standard Model group are considered. The neutral exotic gauge boson $Z^\prime$ marks then a new symmetry frontier.

Concerning the Landau Pole in 3-3-1 Models

Some 3-3-1 models predict the existence of a non-perturbative regime at the TeV scale. We study in these models, and their supersymmetric extensions, the energy at which the non-perturbative limit and a Landau-like pole arise. An order of magnitude for the mass of the extra neutral vector boson, $Z^\prime$, present in these models is also obtained.

Grand Unification and Proton Stability Near the Peccei-Quinn Scale

We show that in an $SU(2)\otimes U(1)$ model with a DSF-like invisible axion it is possible to obtain (i) the convergence of the three gauge coupling constants at an energy scale near the Peccei-Quinn scale; (ii) the correct value for $\sin^2\hatθ_W(M_Z)$; (iii) the stabilization of the proton by the cyclic $Z_{13}\otimes Z_3$ symmetries which also stabilize the axion as a solution to the strong CP problem. Concerning the convergence of the three coupling constants and the prediction of the weak mixing angle at the $Z$-peak, this model is as good as the minimal supersymmetric standard model with $μ_{\rm SUSY}=M_Z$. We also consider the standard model with six and seven Higgs doublets. The main calculations were done in the 1-loop approximation but we briefly consider the 2-loop contributions.

Stabilizing the invisible axion in 3-3-1 models

By introducing local $Z_N$ symmetries with $N=11,13$ in two 3-3-1 models, it is possible to implement an automatic Peccei-Quinn symmetry, keeping the axion protected against gravitational effects at the same time. Both models have a $Z_2$ domain wall problem and the neutrinos are strictly Dirac particles.

Naturally light invisible axion and local Z_{13} times Z_3 symmetries

We show that by imposing local $Z_{13}\otimes Z_3$ symmetries in an $SU(2)\otimes U(1)$ electroweak model we can implement an invisible axion in such a way that (i) the Peccei-Quinn symmetry is an automatic symmetry of the classical Lagrangian; and (ii) the axion is protected from semi classical gravitational effects. In order to be able to implement such a large discrete symmetry, and at the same time allow a general mixing in each charge sector, we introduce right-handed neutrinos and enlarge the scalar sector of the model. The domain wall problem is briefly considered.

Dynamical Breakdown of Symmetry in a (2+1) Dimensional Model Containing the Chern-Simons Field

We study the vacuum stability of a model of massless scalar and fermionic fields minimally coupled to a Chern-Simons field. The classical Lagrangian only involves dimensionless parameters, and the model can be thought as a (2+1) dimensional analog of the Coleman-Weinberg model. By calculating the effective potential, we show that dynamical symmetry breakdown occurs in the two-loop approximation. The vacuum becomes asymmetric and mass generation, for the boson and fermion fields takes place. Renormalization group arguments are used to clarify some aspects of the solution.

Discrete symmetries, invisible axion and lepton number symmetry in an economic 3-3-1 model

We show that Peccei-Quinn and lepton number symmetries can be a natural outcome in a 3-3-1 model with right-handed neutrinos after imposing a Z_11 x Z_2 symmetry. This symmetry is suitably accommodated in this model when we augmented its spectrum by including merely one singlet scalar field. We work out the breaking of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry, yielding the axion, and study the phenomenological consequences. The main result of this work is that the solution to the strong CP problem can be implemented in a natural way, implying an invisible axion phenomenologically unconstrained, free of domain wall formation and constituting a good candidate for the cold dark matter.

Realistic extremely flat scalar potential in 3-3-1 models

We show that in 3-3-1 models it is possible to implement an extremely flat scalar potential, i.e., a zero contribution to the cosmological constant, and still having realistic values for the masses of the scalar Higgs fields. Besides, when loop corrections are considered they impose constraints over heavy particles masses (exotic quarks and extra vector bosons) which are present in the model. A crucial ingredient in 3-3-1 models is the existence of trilinear terms in the scalar potential. We also consider the two-Higgs doublets extension of the standard model with and without supersymmetry.
