An asymptotic formula for integer points on Markoff-Hurwitz varieties

We establish an asymptotic formula for the number of integer solutions to the Markoff-Hurwitz equation \[ x_{1}^{2}+x_{2}^{2}+\ldots+x_{n}^{2}=ax_{1}x_{2}\ldots x_{n}+k. \] When $n\geq4$ the previous best result is by Baragar (1998) that gives an exponential rate of growth with exponent $β$ that is not in general an integer when $n\geq 4$. We give a new interpretation of this exponent of growth in terms of the unique parameter for which there exists a certain conformal measure on projective space.

Markoff Triples and Strong Approximation

We investigate the transitivity properties of the group of morphisms generated by Vieta involutions on the solutions in congruences to the Markoff equation as well as to other Markoff type affine cubic surfaces. These are dictated by the finite $\bar{\mathbb Q}$ orbits of these actions and these can be determined effectively. The results are applied to give forms of strong approximation for integer points, and to sieving, on these surfaces

A Spectral Gap Theorem in $SU(d)$

We establish the spectral gap property for dense subgroups of $SU(d)$ ($d\geq 2$), generated by finitely many elements with algebraic entries; this result was announced in [BG3]. The method of proof differs, in several crucial aspects, from that used in [BG] in the case of SU(2).

Generalization of Selberg's 3/16 Theorem and Affine Sieve

A celebrated theorem of Selberg states that for congruence subgroups of SL(2,Z) there are no exceptional eigenvalues below 3/16. We prove a generalization of Selberg's theorem for infinite index "congruence" subgroups of SL(2,Z). Consequently we obtain sharp upper bounds in the affine linear sieve, where in contrast to \cite{BGS} we use an archimedean norm to order the elements.

Strong uniform expansion in $\mathrm{SL}(2,p)$

We show that there is an infinite set of primes $\mathcal{P}$ of density one, such that the family of \textit{all} Cayley graphs of $\mathrm{SL}(2,p)$%, $p\in \mathcal{P}$, is a family of expanders.

On the girth of random Cayley graphs

We prove that random d-regular Cayley graphs of the symmetric group asymptotically almost surely have girth at least (log_{d-1}|G|)^{1/2}/2 and that random d-regular Cayley graphs of simple algebraic groups over F_q asymptotically almost surely have girth at least log_{d-1}|G|/dim(G). For the symmetric p-groups the girth is between log log |G| and (log|G|)^alpha with alpha<1. Several conjectures and open questions are presented.

Poisson--Dirichlet distribution for random Belyi surfaces

Brooks and Makover introduced an approach to studying the global geometric quantities (in particular, the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian, injectivity radius and diameter) of a ``typical'' compact Riemann surface of large genus based on compactifying finite-area Riemann surfaces associated with random cubic graphs; by a theorem of Belyi, these are ``dense'' in the space of compact Riemann surfaces. The question as to how these surfaces are distributed in the Teichmüller spaces depends on the study of oriented cycles in random cubic graphs with random orientation; Brooks and Makover conjectured that asymptotically normalized cycle lengths follow Poisson--Dirichlet distribution. We present a proof of this conjecture using representation theory of the symmetric group.

Counting formulas associated with some random matrix averages

Moments of secular and inverse secular coefficients, averaged over random matrices from classical groups, are related to the enumeration of non-negative matrices with prescribed row and column sums. Similar random matrix averages are related to certain configurations of vicious random walkers and to the enumeration of plane partitions. The combinatorial meaning of the average of the characteristic polynomial of random Hermitian and Wishart matrices is also investigated, and consequently several simple universality results are derived.

Pseudomoments of the Riemann zeta-function and pseudomagic squares

We compute integral moments of partial sums of the Riemann zeta function on the critical line and obtain an expression for the leading coefficient as a product of the standard arithmetic factor and a geometric factor. The geometric factor is equal to the volume of the convex polytope of substochastic matrices and is equal to the leading coefficient in the expression for moments of truncated characteristic polynomial of a random unitary matrix.
