Cell Motility Dependence on Adhesive Wetting

Adhesive cell-substrate interactions are crucial for cell motility and are responsible for the necessary traction that propels cells. These interactions can also change the shape of the cell, analogous to liquid droplet wetting on adhesive substrates. To address how these shape changes affect cell migration and cell speed we model motility using deformable, 2D cross-sections of cells in which adhesion and frictional forces between cell and substrate can be varied separately. Our simulations show that increasing the adhesion results in increased spreading of cells and larger cell speeds. We propose an analytical model which shows that the cell speed is inversely proportional to an effective height of the cell and that increasing this height results in increased internal shear stress. The numerical and analytical results are confirmed in experiments on motile eukaryotic cells.

Pneumatic capillary gun for ballistic delivery of microparticles

A pneumatic gun for ballistic delivery of microparticles to soft targets is proposed and demonstrated. The particles are accelerated by a high speed flow of Helium in a capillary tube. Vacuum suction applied to a concentric, larger diameter tube is used to divert substantially all of the flow of Helium from the gun nozzle, thereby preventing the gas from hitting and damaging the target. Speed of ejection of micron-sized gold particles from the gun nozzle, and their depth of penetration into agarose gels are reported.

Chaotic flow and efficient mixing in a micro-channel with a polymer solution

Microscopic flows are almost universally linear, laminar and stationary because Reynolds number, $Re$, is usually very small. That impedes mixing in micro-fluidic devices, which sometimes limits their performance. Here we show that truly chaotic flow can be generated in a smooth micro-channel of a uniform width at arbitrarily low $Re$, if a small amount of flexible polymers is added to the working liquid. The chaotic flow regime is characterized by randomly fluctuating three-dimensional velocity field and significant growth of the flow resistance. Although the size of the polymer molecules extended in the flow may become comparable with the micro-channel width, the flow behavior is fully compatible with that in a table-top channel in the regime of elastic turbulence. The chaotic flow leads to quite efficient mixing, which is almost diffusion independent. For macromolecules, mixing time in this microscopic flow can be three to four orders of magnitude shorter than due to molecular diffusion.
