Entanglement of Vacuum States With the de Sitter Horizon: Consequences on Holographic Dark Energy

The aim of this article is to study the effect of an Event Horizon on the entanglement of the Quantum Vacuum and how entanglement, together with the Holographic Principle, may explain the current value of the Cosmological Constant, in light of recent theories. Entanglement is tested for vacuum states very near and very far from the Horizon of a de Sitter Universe, using the Peres-Horodecki (PPT) criterion. A scalar vacuum field ($\hatϕ$) is averaged inside two boxes of volume $V$ in different spatial positions such that it acquires the structure of a bipartite Quantum Harmonic Oscillator, for which the PPT criterion is a necessary but not sufficient condition of separability. Entanglement is found between states obtained from boxes shaped as spherical shells with thickness of the order of one Planck distance ($l_p$), when one of the states is near the Horizon, and the other state is anywhere in the Universe. Entanglement disappears when the distance of the state near the horizon and the Horizon increases to around $5l_p$. If we consider the Horizon not as a surface but as a spherical shell of thickness $l_p$, then this means that there is entanglement between the states in the Horizon and the rest of the Universe. When both states are at distances larger than $\sim 5 l_p$ from the Horizon, no entanglement is found.

The $π^0-η-η'$ mixing in a generalized multi-quark interaction scheme

We investigate the isospin symmetry breaking effects within a recently derived Nambu-Jona-Lasinio related model by fitting the measured pseudoscalar meson masses and weak decay couplings $f_π$, $f_K$. Our model contains the next to leading order terms in the $1/N_c$ expansion of the effective multi-quark Lagrangian, including the ones that break the chiral symmetry explicitly. We show the important phenomenological role of these interactions: (1) they lead to an accurate fit of the low-lying pseudoscalar nonet characteristics; (2) they account for a very good agreement of the current quark masses with the present PDG values; (3) they reduce by $40\%$ the ratio $ε/ε'$ of the $π_0-η$ and $π_0-η'$ mixing angles, as compared to the case that contemplates explicit breaking only in the leading order, bringing it in consonance with the quoted values in the literature. The conventional NJL-type models fail in the joint description of these parameters.

Average Thermal Evolution of the Universe

We sketch the average behaviour of the temperatures and densities of the main components of the $Λ$CDM universe after inflation. It is modelled as a perfect fluid with dark energy associated with the macroscopic effect of conformal variations of the metric. The main events of the thermal evolution are studied, such as the effect of particle annihilations and decoupling, and the transitions between the eras dominated by different entities. Estimates of the average present epoch temperature of baryonic matter and dark matter composed of neutralinos are given. We study the eventual presence of a sterile neutrino component and find that the sterile neutrino density at the epoch of primordial nucleosynthesis is in agreement with expectations when their evolution starts, at the end of inflation, in temperature equilibrium with the rest of the universe.

Pion quadrupole polarizabilities in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

We present the results for the pion electromagnetic quadrupole polarizabilities, calculated within the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. We obtain the sign and magnitude in agreement with the respective experimental analysis based on the Dispersion Sum Rules. At the same time the dipole polarizabilities are well reproduced. Comparison is also made with the results from the Chiral Perturbation Theory.

Quadrupole polarizabilities of the pion in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

The electromagnetic dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities of the neutral and charged pions are calculated in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. Our results agree with the recent experimental analysis of these quantities based on Dispersion Sum Rules. Comparison is made with the results from the Chiral Perturbation Theory.

Application of Quantum Darwinism to Diffusion during Cosmic Inflation

A baby-universe model of cosmic inflation is analyzed using quantum Darwinism. In this model cosmic inflation can be approximated as Brownian motion of a quantum field, and quantum Darwinism implies that decoherence is the result of quantum Brownian motion of the wave function. The quantum Darwinism approach to decoherence in the baby-universe cosmic-inflation model yields the decoherence times of the baby-universes. The result is the equation relating the baby-universe's decoherence time with the Hubble parameter. A brief discussion of the relation between Darwinism and determinism is provided in the Appendix.

Explicit chiral symmetry breaking and the 1/N expansion in models with multi-fermion interactions

Explicit chiral symmetry breaking is a natural feature of many QCD inspired models with multi-quark interactions. To carry out the 1/N expansion of these theories, one integrates over the quark fields. In the process of calculating the one-loop fermion determinant which is not chiral invariant due to quark masses, special care must be taken in order not to alter the original symmetry breaking pattern of the Lagrangian. We show how to do this consistently.

Analytic perturbation theory versus 1/N expansion in the Gross-Neveu model

The 1/N expansion can be successfully used to calculate the Green functions of the two-dimensional O(2N) Gross - Neveu model. In parallel, the methods of analytic perturbation theory are also applied. Comparing the results of these two calculations at leading order, we report on the surprising agreement between them.

Effects of eight-quark interactions on the hadronic vacuum and mass spectra of light mesons

The combined effective low energy QCD Lagrangians of Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio (NJL) and 't Hooft are supplemented with eight-quark interactions. This work is a follow-up of recent findings, namely (i) the six quark flavour determinant 't Hooft term destabilizes the NJL vacuum, (ii) the addition of a chiral invariant eight-fermion contact term renders the ground state of the theory globally stable; (iii) stability constrains the values of coupling constants of the model, meaning that even in the presence of eight-quark forces the system can be unstable in a certain parameter region. In the present work we study a phenomenological output of eight-quark interactions considering the mass spectra of pseudoscalar and scalar mesons. Mixing angles are obtained and their equivalence to the two angle approach is derived. We show that the masses of pseudoscalars are almost neutral to the eight-quark forces. The only marked effect of the second order in the SU(3) breaking is found in the $η-η'$ system. The scalars are more sensitive to the eight-quark interactions. A strong repulsion between the singlet-octet members is the reason for the obtained low mass of the $σ$ state within the model considered.

Functional Integral Approaches to the Bosonization of Effective Multi-Quark Interactions with $U_\A(1)$ Breaking

Low energy hadron phenomenology involving the (u,d,s) quarks is often approached through effective multi-quark Lagrangians with the symmetries of QCD. A very successful approach consists in taking the four-quark Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Lagrangian with the chiral $U_L(3)\times U_R(3)$ symmetry in the massless limit, combined with the $U_\A(1)$ breaking six-quark flavour determinant interaction of 't Hooft. We review the present status and some very recent developments related to the functional integration over the cubic term in auxiliary mesonic variables that one introduces to bosonize the system. Various approaches for handling this functional, which cannot be integrated exactly, are discussed: the stationary phase approximation, the perturbative expansion, the loop expansion, their interrelation and importance for the evaluation of the effective action. The intricate group structure rules out the method of Airy's integral. The problem of the instability of the vacuum is stated and a solution given by including eight-quark interactions.

Stationary phase corrections in the process of bosonization of multi-quark interactions

The functional integration over the auxiliary bosonic variables of cubic order related with the effective action of the Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio model with 't Hooft term has recently been obtained in the form of a loop expansion. Even numbers of loops contribute to the action, while odd numbers of loops are assigned to the measure. We consider the two-loop corrections and analyse their effect on the low-lying pseudoscalar and scalar mass spectra, quark condensates and weak decay constants. The results are compared to the leading order calculations and other approaches.

Aspects of U_A(1) breaking in the Nambu and Jona-Lasinio model

The six-quark instanton induced 't Hooft interaction, which breaks the unwanted U_A (1) symmetry of QCD, is a source of perturbative corrections to the leading order result formed by the four-quark forces with the U_L(3)X U_R(3) chiral symmetry. A detailed quantitative calculation is carried out to bosonize the model by the functional integral method. We concentrate our efforts on finding ways to integrate out the auxiliary bosonic variables. The functional integral over these variables cannot be evaluated exactly. We show that the modified stationary phase approach leads to a resummation within the perturbative series and calculate the integral in the ``two-loop'' approximation. The result is a correction to the effective mesonic Lagrangian which may be important for the low-energy spectrum and dynamics of the scalar and pseudoscalar nonets.

Perturbative approach to U_A(1) breaking

The six-quark instanton induced 't Hooft interaction is considered in combination with the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type U_L(3)X U_R(3) chiral symmetric Lagrangian. We discuss the bosonization of this multi-quark interaction, taking the U_A(1) breaking as a perturbation. We discuss its relation with the usual approach.

The 't Hooft determinant resolution of the eta' puzzle

The six-quark instanton induced 't Hooft interaction, which breaks the unwanted U_A(1) symmetry of QCD, is also a sourse of semi-classical corrections to the low energy effective action. It is argued that there emerges a dimensionless expansion parameter that introduces a new mass scale, Lambda_E^2=6 GeV^2, in the 0^-, 0^+ channels. This scale plays a similar role as the large critical mass M^2_crit > 4.2-6.6 GeV^2 discovered in the framework of QCD sum rules in the 0^-, 0^+ gluonic channels. In particular, it allows to resolve the eta' puzzle. To extract Lambda_E we calculate the masses of the lightest pseudoscalar meson nonet by using the Nambu --Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type U_L(3)X U_R(3) chiral symmetric Lagrangian together with the 't Hooft determinant. The mechanism which leads to the large value of Lambda_E is scrutinized.

Cosmological Constant from Conformal Fluctuations of the Metric

At the level of the Planck scale, the spacetime metric has to be considered a quantum variable. Conformal quantum fluctuations of the metric tensor are studied here. They lead to an extra term in the Einstein equations which can be identified with a cosmological constant. Quantum fluctuations may therefore contribute to an accelerated expansion of the universe, in accordance with newer observational data.

Fluctuations of the Metric Tensor and Fermion Propagators

Conformal fluctuations of the metric tensor at the Planck scale are considered. They give rise to a lower bound of the proper length. This leads to finite expressions for quantities related to propagators without the need of renormalization or regularization. Quantities like the current quark mass or the effective strong coupling constant have to be reinterpreted.
