Weyl Law Improvement for Products of Spheres

The classical Weyl Law says that if $N_M(λ)$ denotes the number of eigenvalues of the Laplace operator on a $d$-dimensional compact manifold $M$ without a boundary that are less than or equal to $λ$, then $$ N_M(λ)=cλ^d+O(λ^{d-1}).$$ In this paper, we show Duistermaat and Guillemin's result allows us to replace the $O(λ^{d-1})$ error with $o(λ^{d-1})$ if $M$ is a product manifold. We quantify this bound in the case of Cartesian product of spheres by reducing the problem to the study of the distribution of weighted integer lattice points in Euclidean space and formulate a conjecture in the general case reminiscent of the sum-product phenomenon in additive combinatorics.

Configuration sets with nonempty interior

A theorem of Steinhaus states that if $E\subset \mathbb R^d$ has positive Lebesgue measure, then the difference set $E-E$ contains a neighborhood of $0$. Similarly, if $E$ merely has Hausdorff dimension $\dim_{\mathcal H}(E)>(d+1)/2$, a result of Mattila and Sjölin states that the distance set $Δ(E)\subset\mathbb R$ contains an open interval. In this work, we study such results from a general viewpoint, replacing $E-E$ or $Δ(E)$ with more general $Φ\,$-configurations for a class of $Φ:\mathbb R^d\times\mathbb R^d\to\mathbb R^k$, and showing that, under suitable lower bounds on $\dim_{\mathcal H}(E)$ and a regularity assumption on the family of generalized Radon transforms associated with $Φ$, it follows that the set $Δ_Φ(E)$ of $Φ$-configurations in $E$ has nonempty interior in $\mathbb R^k$. Further extensions hold for $Φ\,$-configurations generated by two sets, $E$ and $F$, in spaces of possibly different dimensions and with suitable lower bounds on $\dim_{\mathcal H}(E)+\dim_{\mathcal H}(F)$.

Fourier frames for surface-carried measures

In this paper we show that the surface measure on the boundary of a convex body of everywhere positive Gaussian curvature does not admit a Fourier frame. This answers a question proposed by Lev and provides the first example of a uniformly distributed measure supported on a set of Lebesgue measure zero that does not admit a Fourier frame. In contrast, we show that the surface measure on the boundary of a polytope always admits a Fourier frame. We also explore orthogonal bases and frames adopted to sets under consideration. More precisely, given a compact manifold $M$ without a boundary and $D \subset M$, we ask whether $L^2(D)$ possesses an orthogonal basis of eigenfunctions. The non-abelian nature of this problem, in general, puts it outside the realm of the previously explored questions about the existence of bases of characters for subsets of locally compact abelian groups.

A new perspective on the distance problem over prime fields

Let $\mathbb{F}_p$ be a prime field, and ${\mathcal E}$ a set in $\mathbb{F}_p^2$. Let $Δ({\mathcal E})=\{||x-y||: x,y \in {\mathcal E} \}$, the distance set of ${\mathcal E}$. In this paper, we provide a quantitative connection between the distance set $Δ({\mathcal E})$ and the set of rectangles determined by points in ${\mathcal E}$. As a consequence, we obtain a new lower bound on the size of $Δ({\mathcal E})$ when ${\mathcal E}$ is not too large, improving a previous estimate due to Lund and Petridis and establishing an approach that should lead to significant further improvements.

A new bound on Erdős distinct distances problem in the plane over prime fields

In this paper we obtain a new lower bound on the Erdős distinct distances problem in the plane over prime fields. More precisely, we show that for any set $A\subset \mathbb{F}_p^2$ with $|A|\le p^{7/6}$, the number of distinct distances determined by pairs of points in $A$ satisfies $$ |Δ(A)| \gg |A|^{\frac{1}{2}+\frac{149}{4214}}.$$ Our result gives a new lower bound of $|Δ{(A)}|$ in the range $|A|\le p^{1+\frac{149}{4065}}$. The main tools we employ are the energy of a set on a paraboloid due to Rudnev and Shkredov, a point-line incidence bound given by Stevens and de Zeeuw, and a lower bound on the number of distinct distances between a line and a set in $\mathbb{F}_p^2$. The latter is the new feature that allows us to improve the previous bound due Stevens and de Zeeuw.

Finite trees inside thin subsets of ${\Bbb R}^d$

Bennett, Iosevich and Taylor proved that compact subsets of ${\Bbb R}^d$, $d \ge 2$, of Hausdorff dimensions greater than $\frac{d+1}{2}$ contain chains of arbitrary length with gaps in a non-trivial interval. In this paper we generalize this result to arbitrary tree configurations.

Gabor orthogonal bases and convexity

Let $g(x)=χ_B(x)$ be the indicator function of a bounded convex set in $\Bbb R^d$, $d\geq 2$, with a smooth boundary and everywhere non-vanishing Gaussian curvature. Using a combinatorial appraoch we prove that if $d \neq 1 \mod 4$, then there does not exist $S \subset {\Bbb R}^{2d}$ such that ${ \{g(x-a)e^{2 πi x \cdot b} \}}_{(a,b) \in S}$ is an orthonormal basis for $L^2({\Bbb R}^d)$.

Extension Theorems for Spheres in the Finite Field Setting

In this paper we study the boundedness of extension operators associated with spheres in vector spaces over finite fields. In even dimensions, we estimate the number of incidences between spheres and points in the translated set from a subset of spheres. As a result, we improve the Tomas-Stein exponents, our previous results. The analytic approach and the explicit formula for Fourier transform of the characteristic function on spheres play an important role to get good bounds for exponential sums.

On Falconer's distance set problem in the plane

If $E \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ is a compact set of Hausdorff dimension greater than $5/4$, we prove that there is a point $x \in E$ so that the set of distances $\{ |x-y| \}_{y \in E}$ has positive Lebesgue measure.

Embedding distance graphs in finite field vector spaces

We show that large subsets of vector spaces over finite fields determine certain point configurations with prescribed distance structure. More specifically, we consider the complete graph with vertices as the points of $A \subseteq \mathbf{F}_q^d$ and edges assigned the algebraic distance between pairs of vertices. We prove nontrivial results on locating specified subgraphs of maximum vertex degree at most $t$ in dimensions $d \geq 2t$.

Finite field restriction estimates for the paraboloid in high even dimensions

We prove that the finite field Fourier extension operator for the paraboloid is bounded from $L^2\to L^r$ for $r\geq \frac{2d+4}{d}$ in even dimensions $d\ge 8$, which is the optimal $L^2$ estimate. For $d=6$ we obtain the optimal range $r> \frac{2d+4}{d}=8/3$, apart from the endpoint. For $d=4$ we improve the prior range of $r>16/5=3.2$ to $r\geq 28/9=3.111\ldots$, compared to the conjectured range of $r\geq3$. The key new ingredient is improved additive energy estimates for subsets of the paraboloid.

A multi-parameter variant of the Erdős distance problem

We study the following variant of the Erdős distance problem. Given $E$ and $F$ a point sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and $p = (p_1, \ldots, p_q)$ with $p_1+ \cdots + p_q = d$ is an increasing partition of $d$ define $$ B_p(E,F)=\{(|x_1-y_1|, \ldots, |x_q-y_q|): x \in E, y \in F \},$$ where $x=(x_1, \ldots, x_q)$ with $x_i$ in $\mathbb{R}^{p_i}$. For $p_1 \geq 2$ it is not difficult to construct $E$ and $F$ such that $|B_{p}(E,F)|=1$. On the other hand, it is easy to see that if $γ_q$ is the best know exponent for the distance problem in $\mathbb{R}^{p_i}$ that $|B_p(E,E)| \geq C{|E|}^{\frac{γ_q}{q}}$. The question we study is whether we can improve the exponent $\frac{γ_q}{q}$. We first study partitions of length two in detail and prove the optimal result (up to logarithms) that $$ |B_{2,2}(E)| \gtrapprox |E|.$$ In the generalised two dimensional case for $B_{k,l}$ we need the stronger condition that $E$ is $s$-adaptable for $s<\frac{k}{2}+\frac{1}{3}$, letting $γ_m$ be the best known exponent for the Erdős-distance problem in $\mathbb{R}^m$ for $k \neq l$ we gain a further optimal result of, $$ |B_{k,l}(E)| \gtrapprox |E|^{γ_l}.$$ When $k=l$ we use the explicit $γ_m=\frac{m}{2}-\frac{2}{m(m+2)}$ result due to Solymosi and Vu to gain $$ |B_{k,k}(E)| \gtrapprox |E|^{\frac{13}{14}γ_k}.$$ For a general partition, let $γ_i = \frac{2}{p_i}-\frac{2}{p_i(p_i+2)}$ and $η_i = \frac{2}{2d-(p_i-1)}$. Then if $E$ is $s$-adaptable with $s>d-\frac{p_1}{2}+\frac{1}{3}$ we have $$ B_p(E) \gtrapprox |E|^τ\hspace{0.5cm} \text{where} \hspace{0.5cm} τ= γ_q\left(\frac{γ_1+η_1}{γ_q+(q-1)(γ_1+η_1)}\right).$$ Where $p_i \sim \frac{d}{q}$ implies $τ\sim γ_{q}\left(\frac{1}{q}+\frac{1}{dq}\right)$ and $p_q \sim d$ (with $q<<d$) implies $τ\sim γ_{q}\left(\frac{1}{q}+\frac{1}{q^2}\right)$.

On the unit distance problem

The Erd\H os unit distance conjecture in the plane says that the number of pairs of points from a point set of size $n$ separated by a fixed (Euclidean) distance is $\leq C_ε n^{1+ε}$ for any $ε>0$. The best known bound is $Cn^{\frac{4}{3}}$. We show that if the set under consideration is well-distributed and the fixed distance is much smaller than the diameter of the set, then the exponent $\frac{4}{3}$ is significantly improved. Corresponding results are also established in higher dimensions. The results are obtained by solving the corresponding continuous problem and using a continuous-to-discrete conversion mechanism. The degree of sharpness of results is tested using the known results on the distribution of lattice points dilates of convex domains. We also introduce the following variant of the Erd\H os unit distance problem: how many pairs of points from a set of size $n$ are separated by an integer distance? We obtain some results in this direction and formulate a conjecture.

A variant of Waring's Problem for the ring of integers modulo n

We study a variant of Waring's problem for $\mathbb{Z}_n$, the ring of integers modulo $n$: For a fixed integer $k \geq 2$, what is the minimum number $m$ of $k$th powers necessary such that $x \equiv x_1^k + \dots + x_m^k \pmod{n}$ has a solution for every $x \in \mathbb{Z}_n$? Using only elementary methods, we answer fully this question for exponents $k \leq 10$, and we further discuss some intermediary cases such as categorizing the values of $n$ such that every element in $\mathbb{Z}_n$ can be written as a sum of three squares. Hensel's Theorem for $p$-adic integers plays a key role. Finally, we give an application of this problem to the Erd\H os-Falconer distance problem for rings $\mathbb{Z}_n^d$.

Pinned distance problem, slicing measures and local smoothing estimates

We improve the Peres-Schlag result on pinned distances in sets of a given Hausdorff dimension. In particular, for Euclidean distances, with $$Δ^y(E) = \{|x-y|:x\in E\},$$ we prove that for any $E, F\subset{\Bbb R}^d$, there exists a probability measure $μ_F$ on $F$ such that for $μ_F$-a.e. $y\in F$, (1) $\dim_{\mathcal H}(Δ^y(E))\geqβ$ if $\dim_{\mathcal H}(E) + \frac{d-1}{d+1}\dim_{\mathcal H}(F) > d - 1 + β$; (2) $Δ^y(E)$ has positive Lebesgue measure if $\dim_{\mathcal H}(E)+\frac{d-1}{d+1}\dim_{\mathcal H}(F) > d$; (3) $Δ^y(E)$ has non-empty interior if $\dim_{\mathcal H}(E)+\frac{d-1}{d+1}\dim_{\mathcal H}(F) > d+1$. We also show that in the case when $\dim_{\mathcal H}(E)+\frac{d-1}{d+1}\dim_{\mathcal H}(F)>d$, for $μ_F$-a.e. $y\in F$, $$ \left\{t\in{\Bbb R} : \dim_{\mathcal H}(\{x\in E:|x-y|=t\}) \geq \dim_{\mathcal H}(E)+\frac{d+1}{d-1}\dim_{\mathcal H}(F)-d \right\} $$ has positive Lebesgue measure. This describes dimensions of slicing subsets of $E$, sliced by spheres centered at $y$. In our proof, local smoothing estimates of Fourier integral operators (FIO) plays a crucial role. In turn, we obtain results on sharpness of local smoothing estimates by constructing geometric counterexamples.

Group actions and a multi-parameter Falconer distance problem

In this paper we study the following multi-parameter variant of the celebrated Falconer distance problem. Given ${\textbf{d}}=(d_1,d_2, \dots, d_{\ell})\in \mathbb{N}^{\ell}$ with $d_1+d_2+\dots+d_{\ell}=d$ and $E \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$, we define $$ Δ_{\textbf{d}}(E) = \left\{ \left(|x^{(1)}-y^{(1)}|,\ldots,|x^{(\ell)}-y^{(\ell)}|\right) : x,y \in E \right\} \subseteq \mathbb{R}^{\ell}, $$ where for $x\in \mathbb{R}^d$ we write $x=\left( x^{(1)},\dots, x^{(\ell)} \right)$ with $x^{(i)} \in \mathbb{R}^{d_i}$. We ask how large does the Hausdorff dimension of $E$ need to be to ensure that the $\ell$-dimensional Lebesgue measure of $Δ_{\textbf{d}}(E)$ is positive? We prove that if $2 \leq d_i$ for $1 \leq i \leq \ell$, then the conclusion holds provided $$ \dim(E)>d-\frac{\min d_i}{2}+\frac{1}{3}.$$ We also note that, by previous constructions, the conclusion does not in general hold if $$\dim(E)<d-\frac{\min d_i}{2}.$$ A group action derivation of a suitable Mattila integral plays an important role in the argument.

Bilinear generalized Radon transforms in the plane

Let $σ$ be arc-length measure on $S^1\subset \mathbb R^2$ and $Θ$ denote rotation by an angle $θ\in (0, π]$. Define a model bilinear generalized Radon transform, $$B_θ(f,g)(x)=\int_{S^1} f(x-y)g(x-Θy)\, dσ(y),$$ an analogue of the linear generalized Radon transforms of Guillemin and Sternberg \cite{GS} and Phong and Stein (e.g., \cite{PhSt91,St93}). Operators such as $B_θ$ are motivated by problems in geometric measure theory and combinatorics. For $θ<π$, we show that $B_θ: L^p({\Bbb R}^2) \times L^q({\Bbb R}^2) \to L^r({\Bbb R}^2)$ if $\left(\frac{1}{p},\frac{1}{q},\frac{1}{r}\right)\in Q$, the polyhedron with the vertices $(0,0,0)$, $(\frac{2}{3}, \frac{2}{3}, 1)$, $(0, \frac{2}{3}, \frac{1}{3})$, $(\frac{2}{3},0,\frac{1}{3})$, $(1,0,1)$, $(0,1,1)$ and $(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2})$, except for $\left( \frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2} \right)$, where we obtain a restricted strong type estimate. For the degenerate case $θ=π$, a more restrictive set of exponents holds. In the scale of normed spaces, $p,q,r \ge 1$, the type set $Q$ is sharp. Estimates for the same exponents are also proved for a class of bilinear generalized Radon transforms in $\mathbb R^2$ of the form $$ B(f,g)(x)=\int \int δ(ϕ_1(x,y)-t_1)δ(ϕ_2(x,z)-t_2) δ(ϕ_3(y,z)-t_3) f(y)g(z) ψ(y,z) \, dy\, dz, $$ where $δ$ denotes the Dirac distribution, $t_1,t_2,t_3\in\mathbb R$, $ψ$ is a smooth cut-off and the defining functions $ϕ_j$ satisfy some natural geometric assumptions.

Tight Wavelet Frame Sets in Finite Vector Spaces

Let $q\geq 2$ be an integer, and $\Bbb F_q^d$, $d\geq 1$, be the vector space over the cyclic space $\Bbb F_q$. The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, we obtain sufficient conditions on $E \subset \Bbb F_q^d$ such that the inverse Fourier transform of $1_E$ generates a tight wavelet frame in $L^2(\Bbb F_q^d)$. We call these sets (tight) wavelet frame sets. The conditions are given in terms of multiplicative and translational tilings, which is analogous with Theorem 1.1 ([20]) by Wang in the setting of finite fields. In the second part of the paper, we exhibit a constructive method for obtaining tight wavelet frame sets in $\Bbb F_q^d$, $d\geq 2$, $q$ an odd prime and $q\equiv 3$ (mod 4).
