Symmetry Protected Topological Metals

We show that sharply defined topological quantum phase transitions are not limited to states of matter with gapped electronic spectra. Such transitions may also occur between two gapless metallic states both with extended Fermi surfaces. The transition is characterized by a discontinuous, but not quantized, jump in an off-diagonal transport coefficient. Its sharpness is protected by a symmetry, such as e.g. particle-hole, which remains unbroken across the transition. We present a simple model of this phenomenon, based on 2D $p+ip$ superconductor with an applied supercurrent, and discuss its geometrical interpretation.

Quasiparticle relaxation in superconducting nanostructures

We examine energy relaxation of non-equilibrium quasiparticles in "dirty" superconductors with the electron mean free path much shorter than the superconducting coherence length. Relaxation of low-energy non-equilibrium quasiparticles is dominated by phonon emission. We derive the corresponding collision integral and find the quasiparticle relaxation rate. The latter is sensitive to the breaking of time reversal symmetry (TRS) by a magnetic field (or magnetic impurities). As a concrete application of the developed theory, we address quasiparticle trapping by a vortex and a current-biased constriction. We show that trapping of hot quasiparticles may predominantly occur at distances from the vortex core, or the constriction, significantly exceeding the superconducting coherence length.

Quantum lattice Boltzmann study of random-mass Dirac fermions in one dimension

We study the time evolution of quenched random-mass Dirac fermions in one dimension by quantum lattice Boltzmann simulations. For nonzero noise strength, the diffusion of an initial wave packet stops after a finite time interval, reminiscent of Anderson localization. However, instead of exponential localization we find algebraically decaying tails in the disorder-averaged density distribution. These qualitatively match $\propto x^{-3/2}$ decay, which has been predicted by analytic calculations based on zero-energy solutions of the Dirac equation.

Power-law out of time order correlation functions in the SYK model

We evaluate the finite temperature partition sum and correlation functions of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Starting from a recently proposed mapping of the SYK model onto Liouville quantum mechanics, we obtain our results by exact integration over conformal Goldstone modes reparameterizing physical time. Perhaps, the least expected result of our analysis is that at time scales proportional to the number of particles the out of time order correlation function crosses over from a regime of exponential decay to a universal $t^{-6}$ power-law behavior.

Dynamical phase transition in large deviation statistics of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation

We study the short-time behavior of the probability distribution $\mathcal{P}(H,t)$ of the surface height $h(x=0,t)=H$ in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation in $1+1$ dimension. The process starts from a stationary interface: $h(x,t=0)$ is given by a realization of two-sided Brownian motion constrained by $h(0,0)=0$. We find a singularity of the large deviation function of $H$ at a critical value $H=H_c$. The singularity has the character of a second-order phase transition. It reflects spontaneous breaking of the reflection symmetry $x \leftrightarrow -x$ of optimal paths $h(x,t)$ predicted by the weak-noise theory of the KPZ equation. At $|H|\gg |H_c|$ the corresponding tail of $\mathcal{P}(H)$ scales as $-\ln \mathcal{P} \sim |H|^{3/2}/t^{1/2}$ and agrees, at any $t>0$, with the proper tail of the Baik-Rains distribution, previously observed only at long times. The other tail of $\mathcal{P}$ scales as $-\ln \mathcal{P} \sim |H|^{5/2}/t^{1/2}$ and coincides with the corresponding tail for the sharp-wedge initial condition.

Finite Size Scaling of Topological Entanglement Entropy

We consider scaling of the entanglement entropy across a topological quantum phase transition in one dimension. The change of the topology manifests itself in a sub-leading term, which scales as $L^{-1/α}$ with the size of the subsystem $L$, here $α$ is the Rényi index. This term reveals the universal scaling function $h_α(L/ξ)$, where $ξ$ is the correlation length, which is sensitive to the topological index.

Short-time height distribution in 1d KPZ equation: starting from a parabola

We study the probability distribution $\mathcal{P}(H,t,L)$ of the surface height $h(x=0,t)=H$ in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation in $1+1$ dimension when starting from a parabolic interface, $h(x,t=0)=x^2/L$. The limits of $L\to\infty$ and $L\to 0$ have been recently solved exactly for any $t>0$. Here we address the early-time behavior of $\mathcal{P}(H,t,L)$ for general $L$. We employ the weak-noise theory - a variant of WKB approximation -- which yields the optimal history of the interface, conditioned on reaching the given height $H$ at the origin at time $t$. We find that at small $H$ $\mathcal{P}(H,t,L)$ is Gaussian, but its tails are non-Gaussian and highly asymmetric. In the leading order and in a proper moving frame, the tails behave as $-\ln \mathcal{P}= f_{+}|H|^{5/2}/t^{1/2}$ and $f_{-}|H|^{3/2}/t^{1/2}$. The factor $f_{+}(L,t)$ monotonically increases as a function of $L$, interpolating between time-independent values at $L=0$ and $L=\infty$ that were previously known. The factor $f_{-}$ is independent of $L$ and $t$, signalling universality of this tail for a whole class of deterministic initial conditions.

Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model as Liouville Quantum Mechanics

We show that the proper inclusion of soft reparameterization modes in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model of $N$ randomly interacting Majorana fermions reduces its long-time behavior to that of Liouville quantum mechanics. As a result, all zero temperature correlation functions decay with the universal exponent $\propto τ^{-3/2}$ for times larger than the inverse single particle level spacing $τ\gg N\ln N$. In the particular case of the single particle Green function this behavior is manifestation of the zero-bias anomaly, or scaling in energy as $ε^{1/2}$. We also present exact diagonalization study supporting our conclusions.

Topological spin ordering via Chern-Simons superconductivity

We use the Chern-Simons (CS) fermion representation of s =1/2 spin operators to construct topological, long-range magnetically ordered states of interacting two-dimensional (2D) quantum spin models. We show that the fermion-fermion interactions mediated by the dynamic CS flux attachment may give rise to Cooper pairing of the fermions. Specifically, in an XY model on the honeycomb lattice, this construction leads to a "CS superconductor," which belongs to a topologically non-trivial in 2D symmetry class DIII, with particle-hole and time-reversal symmetries. It is shown that in the original spin language, this state corresponds to a symmetry protected topological state, which coexists with a magnetic long-range order. We discuss physical manifestations of the topological character of the corresponding state and requirements for models that could host it.

Sinai Diffusion at Quasi-1D Topological Phase Transitions

We consider critical quantum transport in disordered topological quantum wires at the transition between phases with different topological indexes. Focusing on the example of thermal transport in class D (`Majorana') quantum wires, we identify a transport universality class distinguished for anomalous retardation in the propagation of excitations -- a quantum generalization of Sinai diffusion. We discuss the expected manifestations of this transport mechanism for heat propagation in topological superconductors near criticality and provide a microscopic theory explaining the phenomenon.

Universal Finite-Size Scaling around Topological Quantum Phase Transitions

The critical point of a topological phase transition is described by a conformal field theory, where finite-size corrections to energy are uniquely related to its central charge. We investigate the finite-size scaling away from criticality and find a scaling function, which discriminates between phases with different topological indexes. This function appears to be universal for all five Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes with non-trivial topology in one spatial dimension. We obtain an analytic form of the scaling function and compare it with numerical results.

Quantum impurities: from mobile Josephson junctions to depletons

We overview the main features of mobile impurities moving in one-dimensional superfluid backgrounds by modeling it as a mobile Josephson junction, which leads naturally to the periodic dispersion of the impurity. The dissipation processes, such as radiative friction and quantum viscosity, are shown to result from the interaction of the collective phase difference with the background phonons. We develop a more realistic depleton model of an impurity-hole bound state that provides a number of exact results interpolating between the semiclassical weakly-interacting picture and the strongly interacting Tonks-Girardeau regime. We also discuss the physics of a trapped impurity, relevant to current experiments with ultra cold atoms.

Statistical transmutation in Floquet driven optical lattices

We show that interacting bosons in a periodically-driven two dimensional (2D) optical lattice may effectively exhibit fermionic statistics. The phenomenon is similar to the celebrated Tonks-Girardeau regime in 1D. The Floquet band of a driven lattice develops the moat shape, i.e. a minimum along a closed contour in the Brillouin zone. Such degeneracy of the kinetic energy favors fermionic quasiparticles. The statistical transmutation is achieved by the Chern-Simons flux attachment similar to the fractional quantum Hall case. We show that the velocity distribution of the released bosons is a sensitive probe of the fermionic nature of their stationary Floquet state.

Topology vs. Anderson localization: non-perturbative solutions in one dimension

We present an analytic theory of quantum criticality in quasi one-dimensional topological Anderson insulators. We describe these systems in terms of two parameters $(g,χ)$ representing localization and topological properties, respectively. Certain critical values of $χ$ (half-integer for $\Bbb{Z}$ classes, or zero for $\Bbb{Z}_2$ classes) define phase boundaries between distinct topological sectors. Upon increasing system size, the two parameters exhibit flow similar to the celebrated two parameter flow of the integer quantum Hall insulator. However, unlike the quantum Hall system, an exact analytical description of the entire phase diagram can be given in terms of the transfer-matrix solution of corresponding supersymmetric non-linear sigma-models. In $\Bbb{Z}_2$ classes we uncover a hidden supersymmetry, present at the quantum critical point.

Spontaneous formation of a non-uniform chiral spin liquid in moat-band lattices

A number of lattices exhibit moat-like band structures, i.e. a band with infinitely degenerate energy minima attained along a closed line in the Brillouin zone. If such a lattice is populated with hard-core bosons, the degeneracy prevents their condensation. At half-filling, the system is equivalent to $s=1/2$ XY model at zero magnetic field, while absence of condensation translates into the absence of magnetic order in the XY plane. Here we show that the ground state breaks the time-reversal as well as inversion symmetries. This state, which may be identified with the chiral spin liquid, has a bulk gap and chiral gapless edge excitations. The applications of the developed analytical theory include an explanation of recent numerical findings and a suggestion for the chiral spin liquid realizations in experiments with cold atoms in optical lattices.

Coulomb blockade with neutral modes

We study transport through a quantum dot in the fractional quantum Hall regime with filling factors ν=2/3 and ν=5/2, weakly coupled to the leads. We account for both injection of electrons to/from the leads, and quasiparticle rearrangement processes between the edge and the bulk of the quantum dot. The presence of neutral modes introduces topological constraints that modify qualitatively the features of the Coulomb blockade (CB). The periodicity of CB peak spacings doubles and the ratio of spacing between adjacent peaks approaches (in the low temperature and large dot limit) a universal value: 2:1 for ν=2/3 and 3:1 for ν=5/2. The corresponding CB diamonds alternate their width in the direction of the bias voltage and allow for the determination of the neutral mode velocity, and of the topological numbers associated with it.

Instanton calculus without equations of motion: semiclassics from monodromies of a Riemann surface

Instanton calculations in semiclassical quantum mechanics rely on integration along trajectories which solve classical equations of motion. However in systems with higher dimensionality or complexified phase space these are rarely attainable. A prime example are spin-coherent states which are used e.g. to describe single molecule magnets (SMM). We use this example to develop instanton calculus which does not rely on explicit solutions of the classical equations of motion. Energy conservation restricts the complex phase space to a Riemann surface of complex dimension one, allowing to deform integration paths according to Cauchy's integral theorem. As a result, the semiclassical actions can be evaluated without knowing actual classical paths. Furthermore we show that in many cases such actions may be solely derived from monodromy properties of the corresponding Riemann surface and residue values at its singular points. As an example, we consider quenching of tunneling processes in SMM by an applied magnetic field.

Statistical mechanics of Coulomb gases as quantum theory on Riemann surfaces

Statistical mechanics of 1D multivalent Coulomb gas may be mapped onto non-Hermitian quantum mechanics. We use this example to develop instanton calculus on Riemann surfaces. Borrowing from the formalism developed in the context of Seiberg-Witten duality, we treat momentum and coordinate as complex variables. Constant energy manifolds are given by Riemann surfaces of genus $g\geq 1$. The actions along principal cycles on these surfaces obey ODE in the moduli space of the Riemann surface known as Picard-Fuchs equation. We derive and solve Picard-Fuchs equations for Coulomb gases of various charge content. Analysis of monodromies of these solutions around their singular points yields semiclassical spectra as well as instanton effects such as Bloch bandwidth. Both are shown to be in perfect agreement with numerical simulations.
