Replica Treatment of the Calogero-Sutherland Model

Employing Forrester-Ha method of Jack polynomials, we derive an integral identity connecting certain N-fold coordinate average of the Calogero-Sutherland model with the n-fold replica integral. Subsequent analytical continuation to non-integer n leads to asymptotic expressions for the (static and dynamic) density-density correlation function of the model as well as the Green's function for an arbitrary coupling constant $λ$.

Landauer Conductance without Two Chemical Potentials

We present a theory of the four--terminal conductance for the multi-channel tunneling barrier, which is based on the self-consistent solution of Shrodinger, Poisson and continuity equations. We derive new results for the case of a barrier embedded in a long wire with and without disorder. We also recover known expressions for the conductance of the barrier placed into a ballistic constriction. Our approach avoids a problematic use of two chemical potentials in the same system.

Weak Charge Quantization as an Instanton of Interacting sigma-model

Coulomb blockade in a quantum dot attached to a diffusive conductor is considered in the framework of the non-linear sigma-model. It is shown that the weak charge quantization on the dot is associated with instanton configurations of the Q-field in the conductor. The instantons have a finite action and are replica non--symmetric. It is argued that such instantons may play a role in the transition regime to the interacting insulator.

Counting Statistics of an Adiabatic Pump

We consider quantum statistics of charge transmitted through a mesoscopic device in the adiabatic pumping process. A general formula for the distribution function of the transmitted charge in terms of the time-dependent S-matrix is obtained. It is applied to a few simple examples of the pumping cycles. We identify coherent pumping strategies which lead to the binomial charge distribution and minimize the fluctuations of the pumped current. Conditions for the ideal noiseless quantized pump are discussed.

Wigner-Dyson Statistics from the Replica Method

We compute the correlation functions of the eigenvalues in the Gaussian unitary ensemble using the fermionic replica method. We show that non--trivial saddle points, which break replica symmetry, must be included in the calculation in order to reproduce correctly the exact results for the correlation functions at large distance.

Level Correlations in Disordered Metals: the Replica sigma-Model

We compute energy level correlations in weakly disordered metallic grains using the fermionic replica method. We use the standard sigma-model approach and show that non--trivial saddle points, which break replica symmetry, must be included in the calculation to reproduce the oscillatory behavior of the correlations. We calculate the correlation functions in all three classical ensembles GOE, GUE and GSE including the finite-dimensional gradient corrections. Our results coincides with those obtained by the supersymmetric sigma-model and the semi-classical trace formula.

Electron--electron Interactions in Disordered Metals: Keldysh Formalism

We develop a field theory formalism for the disordered interacting electron liquid in the dynamical Keldysh formulation. This formalism is an alternative to the previously used replica technique. In addition it naturally allows for the treatment of non-equilibrium effects. Employing the gauge invariance of the theory and carefully choosing the saddle point in the $Q$-matrix manifold, we separate purely phase effects of the fluctuating potential from the ones that change quasi-particle dynamics. As a result, the cancellation of super-divergent diagrams (double logarithms in d=2) is automatically build in the formalism. As a byproduct we derive a non--perturbative expression for the single particle density of states. The remaining low-energy sigma--model describes the quantum fluctuations of the electron distribution function. Its saddle point equation appears to be the quantum kinetic equation with an appropriate collision integral along with collisionless terms. Altshuler-Aronov corrections to conductivity are shown to arise from the one-loop quantum fluctuation effects.

On the Nature of Infrared Singularities in $d\leq 2$ Disordered Interacting Systems

We address the problem of infrared singularities in the perturbation theory for disordered interacting systems in $d\leq 2$. We show that a typical, sufficiently large interacting system exhibits a linear instability in the spin triplet channel. In a density-density channel, although stability is preserved, a large number of soft modes is accumulated. These phenomena are responsible for the instability of the weak-interacting fixed point. Although generic, the unstable direction and soft modes are highly sample specific and can not be effectively captured by conventional techniques based on an averaging procedure. Rather, the instability is determined by the largest eigenvalues of the polarization operator. We propose to employ the optimal fluctuation method for evaluating the probability of such events.

Coulomb Drag in Systems with Tunneling Bridges

We study the Coulomb drag effect in double layer electronic systems with local tunneling links. The possibility of tunneling between the layers leads to a pronounced exchange contribution to the transconductance, which is negative and non-vanishing at zero temperature. The diffusive motion of the electrons inside each layer in interplay with the electron-electron interaction cause a distinguishable singular temperature dependence of the transconductance at low temperatures.

Charge Fluctuations in a Quantum Dot with a Dissipative Environment

We consider a multiple tunneling process into a quantum dot capacitively coupled to a dissipative environment. The problem is mapped onto an anisotropic Kondo model in its Coulomb gas representation. The tunneling barrier resistance and the dissipative resistance of the environment correspond to the transverse and the longitudinal Kondo couplings respectively. We thus identify a line in the parameter space of the problem which corresponds to a zero-temperature Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless like phase transition. The physics of coupling to the environment is elucidated and experimental consequences of the predicted transition are discussed.

Statistical Ensembles and Spectral Correlations in Mesoscopic Systems

Employing different statistical ensembles may lead to qualitatively different results concerning averages of physical observables on the mesoscopic scale. Here we discuss differences between the canonical and the grandcanonical ensembles due to both quenched disorder and thermodynamical effects. We show how these differences are related to spectral correlations of the system at hand, and evaluate the conditions (temperature, system's size) when the thermodynamic limit is achieved. We demonstrate our approach by evaluating the heat capacity, persistent currents and the occupation probability of single electron states, employing a systematic diagrammatic approach.

Differences between Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamics on the Mesoscopic Scale

We present a systematic expansion in the ratio between the level spacing and temperature and employ it to evaluate differences between statistical mechanics and thermodynamics in finite disordered systems. These differences are related to spectral correlations in those systems. They are fairly robust and are suppressed at temperatures much higher than the level spacing.

Zero--Bias Anomaly in Finite Size Systems

The small energy anomaly in the single particle density of states of disordered interacting systems is studied for the zero dimensional case. This anomaly interpolates between the non--perturbative Coulomb blockade and the perturbative limit, the latter being an extension of the Altshuler--Aronov zero bias anomaly at d=0. Coupling of the zero dimensional system to a dissipative environment leads to an effective screening of the interaction and a modification of the density of states.

Coulomb Drag in Normal Metals and Superconductors: Diagrammatic Approach

The diagrammatic linear response formalism for the Coulomb drag in two--layer systems is developed. This technique can be used to treat both elastic disorder and intralayer interaction effects. In the absence of intralayer electron--electron correlations we reproduce earlier results, obtained using the kinetic equation and the memory--function formalism. In addition we calculate weak--localization corrections to the drag coefficient and the Hall drag coefficient in a perpendicular magnetic field. As an example of the intralayer interaction effects we consider a situation where one (or both) layers are close to (but above) the superconducting transition temperature. Fluctuation corrections, analogous to the Aslamazov--Larkin corrections, to the drag coefficient are calculated. Although the fluctuation corrections do not enhance the drag coefficient for normal--superconductor systems, a dramatic enhancement is found for superconductor--superconductor structures.

From the Zero--bias Anomaly to the Coulomb Blockade: an Exactly Solvable Model.

A microscopic theory of zero wavelength (q=0) interaction in finite--size systems is proposed. Its exact solution interpolates between the Coulomb blockade and the perturbative Altshuler--Aronov theory, in the strong and weak interaction limits respectively. The tunneling density of states and the quasiparticle life--time are calculated. The physical nature of the q=0 component of the interaction is discussed.

Universal Conductance Distribution in the Quantum Size Regime

We study the conductance (g) distribution function of an ensemble of isolated conducting rings, with an Aharonov--Bohm flux. This is done in the discrete spectrum limit, i.e., when the inelastic rate, frequency and temperature are all smaller than the mean level spacing. Over a wide range of g the distribution function exhibits universal behavior P(g)\sim g^{-(4+β)/3}, where β=1 (2) for systems with (without) a time reversal symmetry. The nonuniversal large g tail of this distribution determines the values of high moments.

Conductance of Aharonov--Bohm Rings: From the Discrete to the Continuous Spectrum Limit

The dissipative conductance of an array of mesoscopic rings, subject to an a.c. magnetic flux is investigated. The magneto--conductance may change sign between canonical and grand-canonical statistical ensembles, as function of the inelastic level broadening and as function of the temperature. Differences between canonical and grand-canonical ensembles persist up to temperature of the order of the Thouless energy.
