Topological realizations and fundamental groups of higher-rank graphs

We investigate topological realizations of higher-rank graphs. We show that the fundamental group of a higher-rank graph coincides with the fundamental group of its topological realization. We also show that topological realization of higher-rank graphs is a functor, and that for each higher-rank graph Λ, this functor determines a category equivalence between the category of coverings of Λ and the category of coverings of its topological realization. We discuss how topological realization relates to two standard constructions for k-graphs: projective limits and crossed products by finitely generated free abelian groups.

A Dixmier-Douady classification for Fell algebras

We generalise the Dixmier-Douady classification of continuous-trace C*-algebras to Fell algebras. To do so, we show that C*-diagonals in Fell algebras are precisely abelian subalgebras with the extension property, and use this to prove that every Fell algebra is Morita equivalent to one containing a diagonal subalgebra. We then use the machinery of twisted groupoid C*-algebras and equivariant sheaf cohomology to define the Dixmier-Douady invariant of a Fell algebra A, and to prove our classification theorem.

Homology for higher-rank graphs and twisted C*-algebras

We introduce a homology theory for k-graphs and explore its fundamental properties. We establish connections with algebraic topology by showing that the homology of a k-graph coincides with the homology of its topological realisation as described by Kaliszewski et al. We exhibit combinatorial versions of a number of standard topological constructions, and show that they are compatible, from a homological point of view, with their topological counterparts. We show how to twist the C*-algebra of a k-graph by a T-valued 2-cocycle and demonstrate that examples include all noncommutative tori. In the appendices, we construct a cubical set \tilde{Q}(Λ) from a k-graph Λ and demonstrate that the homology and topological realisation of Λ coincide with those of \tilde{Q}(Λ) as defined by Grandis.

Group actions on topological graphs

We define the action of a locally compact group $G$ on a topological graph $E$. This action induces a natural action of $G$ on the $C^*$-correspondence ${\mathcal H}(E)$ and on the graph $C^*$-algebra $C^*(E)$. If the action is free and proper, we prove that $C^*(E)\rtimes_r G$ is strongly Morita equivalent to $C^*(E/G)$. We define the skew product of a locally compact group $G$ by a topological graph $E$ via a cocycle $c:E^1\to G$. The group acts freely and properly on this new topological graph $E\times_cG$. If $G$ is abelian, there is a dual action on $C^*(E)$ such that $C^*(E)\rtimes \hat{G}\cong C^*(E\times_cG)$. We also define the fundamental group and the universal covering of a topological graph.

Generalised morphisms of k-graphs: k-morphs

In a number of recent papers, (k+l)-graphs have been constructed from k-graphs by inserting new edges in the last l dimensions. These constructions have been motivated by C*-algebraic considerations, so they have not been treated systematically at the level of higher-rank graphs themselves. Here we introduce k-morphs, which provide a systematic unifying framework for these various constructions. We think of k-morphs as the analogue, at the level of k-graphs, of C*-correspondences between C*-algebras. To make this analogy explicit, we introduce a category whose objects are k-graphs and whose morphisms are isomorphism classes of k-morphs. We show how to extend the assignment Λ\mapsto C*(Λ) to a functor from this category to the category whose objects are C*-algebras and whose morphisms are isomorphism classes of C*-correspondences.

Graphs of $C^*$-correspondences and Fell bundles

We define the notion of a $Λ$-system of $C^*$-correspondences associated to a higher-rank graph $Λ$. Roughly speaking, such a system assigns to each vertex of $Λ$ a $C^*$-algebra, and to each path in $Λ$ a $C^*$-correspondence in a way which carries compositions of paths to balanced tensor products of $C^*$-correspondences. Under some simplifying assumptions, we use Fowler's technology of Cuntz-Pimsner algebras for product systems of $C^*$-correspondences to associate a $C^*$-algebra to each $Λ$-system. We then construct a Fell bundle over the path groupoid $\Gg_Λ$ and show that the $C^*$-algebra of the $Λ$-system coincides with the reduced cross-sectional algebra of the Fell bundle. We conclude by discussing several examples of our construction arising in the literature.

C*-algebras associated to coverings of k-graphs

A covering of k-graphs (in the sense of Pask-Quigg-Raeburn) induces an embedding of universal C*-algebras. We show how to build a (k+1)-graph whose universal algebra encodes this embedding. More generally we show how to realise a direct limit of k-graph algebras under embeddings induced from coverings as the universal algebra of a (k+1)-graph. Our main focus is on computing the K-theory of the (k+1)-graph algebra from that of the component k-graph algebras. Examples of our construction include a realisation of the Kirchberg algebra \mathcal{P}_n whose K-theory is opposite to that of \mathcal{O}_n, and a class of AT-algebras that can naturally be regarded as higher-rank Bunce-Deddens algebras.

Fell bundles associated to groupoid morphisms

Given a continuous open surjective morphism $π:G\to H$ of étale groupoids with amenable kernel, we construct a Fell bundle $E$ over $H$ and prove that its C*-algebra $C^*_r(E)$ is isomorphic to $C^*_r(G)$. This is related to results of Fell concerning C*-algebraic bundles over groups. The case $H=X$, a locally compact space, was treated earlier by Ramazan. We conclude that $C^*_r(G)$ is strongly Morita equivalent to a crossed product, the C*-algebra of a Fell bundle arising from an action of the groupoid $H$ on a C*-bundle over $H^0$. We apply the theory to groupoid morphisms obtained from extensions of dynamical systems and from morphisms of directed graphs with the path lifting property. We also prove a structure theorem for abelian Fell bundles.

KMS states on C*-algebras associated to expansive maps

Using Walters' version of the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius Theorem we show the existence and uniqueness of KMS states for a certain one-parameter group of automorphisms on a C*-algebra associated to a positively expansive map on a compact metric space.

Symmetries of Kirchberg algebras

Let A be a separable unital nuclear purely infinite simple C*-algebra satisfying the Universal Coefficient Theorem, and such that the K_0-class of the identity is zero. We prove that every automorphism of order two of the K-theory of A is implemented by an automorphism of A of order two. As a consequence, we prove that every countable Z/2Z-graded module over the representation ring of Z/2Z is isomorphic to the equivariant K-theory for some action of Z/2Z on a separable unital nuclear purely infinite simple C*-algebra. Along the way, we prove that every not necessarily finitely generated module over the group ring of Z/2Z which is free as an abelian group has a direct sum decomposition with only three kinds of summands, namely the group ring itself and Z on which the nontrivial element of Z/2Z acts either trivially or by multiplication by -1.

Actions of ${\mathbb Z}^k$ associated to higher rnak graphs

An action of ${\mathbb Z}^k$ is associated to a higher rank graph $Λ$ satisfying a mild assumption. This generalises the construction of a topological Markov shift arising from a nonnegative integer matrix. We show that the stable Ruelle algebra of $Λ$ is strongly Morita equivalent to $C^*(Λ)$. Hence, if $Λ$ satisfies the aperiodicity condition, the stable Ruelle algebra is simple, stable and purely infinite.

On certain Cuntz-Pimsner algebras

Let $A$ be a separable unital C*-algebra and let $π: A \ra \Lc(\Hf)$ be a faithful representation of $A$ on a separable Hilbert space $\Hf$ such that $π(A) \cap \Kc(\Hf) = \{0 \}$. We show that $\Oc_E$, the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra associated to the Hilbert $A$-bimodule $E = \Hf \ot_{\C} A$, is simple and purely infinite. If $A$ is nuclear and belongs to the bootstrap class to which the UCT applies, then the same applies to $\Oc_E$. Hence by the Kirchberg-Phillips Theorem the isomorphism class of $\Oc_E$ only depends on the $K$-theory of $A$ and the class of the unit.

Higher rank graph C*-algebras

Building on recent work of Robertson and Steger, we associate a C*-algebra to a combinatorial object which may be thought of as a higher rank graph. This C*-algebra is shown to be isomorphic to that of the associated path groupoid. Sufficient conditions on the higher rank graph are found for the associated C*-algebra to be simple, purely infinite and AF. Results concerning the structure of crossed products by certain natural actions of discrete groups are obtained; a technique for constructing rank 2 graphs from ``commuting'' rank 1 graphs is given.

The Brauer Group of a Locally Compact Groupoid

We define the Brauer group $\Br(G)$ of a locally compact groupoid $G$ to be the set of Morita equivalence classes of pairs $(\A,α)$ consisting of an elementary C*-bundle $\A$ over $G^{(0)}$ satisfying Fell's condition and an action $α$ of $G$ on $\A$ by $*$-isomorphisms. When $G$ is the transformation groupoid $X\times H$, then $\Br(G)$ is the equivariant Brauer group $\Br_H(X)$. In addition to proving that $\Br(G)$ is a group, we prove three isomorphism results. First we show that if $G$ and $H$ are equivalent groupoids, then $\Br(G)$ and $\Br(H)$ are isomorphic. This generalizes the result that if $G$ and $H$ are groups acting freely and properly on a space $X$, say $G$ on the left and $H$ on the right then $\Br_G(X/H)$ and $\Br_H(G/ X)$ are isomorphic. Secondly we show that the subgroup $\Br_0(G)$ of $\Br(G)$ consisting of classes $[\A,α]$ with $\A$ having trivial Dixmier-Douady invariant is isomorphic to a quotient $\E(G)$ of the collection $\Tw(G)$ of twists over $G$. Finally we prove that $\Br(G)$ is isomorphic to the inductive limit $\Ext(G,T)$ of the groups $\E(G^X)$ where $X$ varies over all principal $G$ spaces $X$ and $G^X$ is the imprimitivity groupoid associated to $X$.

Fell bundles over groupoids

The author provides some definitions and structural results about Fell bundles, defined as C^*-algebra bundles over topological groupoids. Such bundles are a mutual generalization of semi-direct products of groups with C^*-algebras and C^*-algebra bundles over topological spaces. In particular a Morita equivalence theorem with semi-direct products is established.

An Equivariant Brauer Group and Actions of Groups on C*-algebras

Suppose that $(G,T)$ is a second countable locally compact transformation group given by a homomorphism $\ell:G\to\Homeo(T)$, and that $A$ is a separable continuous-trace \cs-algebra with spectrum $T$. An action $α:G\to\Aut(A)$ is said to cover $\ell$ if the induced action of $G$ on $T$ coincides with the original one. We prove that the set $\brgt$ of Morita equivalence classes of such systems forms a group with multiplication given by the balanced tensor product: $[A,α][B,β] = [A\Ttensor B,α\tensorβ]$, and we refer to $\brgt$ as the Equivariant Brauer Group. We give a detailed analysis of the structure of $\brgt$ in terms of the Moore cohomology of the group $G$ and the integral cohomology of the space $T$. Using this, we can characterize the stable continuous-trace \cs-algebras with spectrum $T$ which admit actions covering $\ell$. In particular, we prove that if $G=\R$, then every stable continuous-trace \cs-algebra admits an (essentially unique) action covering~$\ell$, thereby substantially improving results of Raeburn and Rosenberg.
