Inflation with negative potentials and the signature reversal symmetry

We discuss recent papers by Hartle, Hawking and Hertog, which proposed that quantum cosmology could predict an inflating universe in models with negative scalar potentials. Here we show that this is a result of an underlying symmetry which is manifest in both classical and quantum theory. Moreover, we show that inflating solutions in such models generally develop tachyonic and ghost instabilities and are therefore unphysical in realistic theories.

Gravitational wave background from hybrid topological defects

We investigate the spectrum of stochastic gravitational wave background generated by hybrid topological defects: domain walls bounded by strings and monopoles connected by strings. Such defects typically decay early in the history of the universe, and their mass scale is not subject to the constraints imposed by microwave background and millisecond pulsar observations. Nonetheless, the intensity of the gravitational wave background from hybrid defects can be quite high at frequencies above $10^{-8} Hz$, and in particular in the frequency range of LIGO, VIRGO and LISA detectors.

Violations of the Weak Energy Condition in Inflating Spacetimes

We argue that many future-eternal inflating spacetimes are likely to violate the weak energy condition. It is possible that such spacetimes may not enforce any of the known averaged conditions either. If this is indeed the case, it may open the door to constructing non-singular, past-eternal inflating cosmologies. Simple non-singular models are, however, unsatisfactory, and it is not clear if satisfactory models can be built that solve the problem of the initial singularity.
