Acoustic phonon dispersion of $α$-RuCl$_3$

Acoustic phonons have recently been posited as playing an integral role in explaining the half-quantized thermal Hall effect in $α$-RuCl$_3$. Therefore, we present much needed inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of its acoustic phonon dispersion, along with calculations using the frozen-phonon method. We also discuss a temperature study which conclusively shows a first-order structural transition to a non-$C2/m$ space group at low temperature. Together these results are an important backbone for future theoretical and experimental studies of $α$-RuCl$_3$.

Nematic state of the FeSe superconductor

We study the crystal structure of the tetragonal iron selenide FeSe and its nematic phase transition to the low-temperature orthorhombic structure using synchrotron x-ray and neutron scattering analyzed in both real and reciprocal space. We show that in the local structure the orthorhombic distortion associated with the electronically driven nematic order is more pronounced at short length scales. It also survives up to temperatures above 90 K where reciprocal-space analysis suggests tetragonal symmetry. Additionally, the real-space pair distribution function analysis of the synchrotron x-ray diffraction data reveals a tiny broadening of the peaks corresponding to the nearest Fe-Fe, nearest Fe-Se, and the next-nearest Fe-Se bond distances as well as the tetrahedral torsion angles at a short length scale of 20 angström. This broadening appears below 20 K and is attributed to a pseudogap. However, we did not observe any further reduction in local symmetry below orthorhombic down to 3 K. Our results suggest that the superconducting gap anisotropy in FeSe is not associated with any symmetry-lowering short-range structural correlations.

Pressure-induced dimerization and collapse of antiferromagnetism in the Kitaev material $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

We present magnetization measurements carried out on polycrystalline and single-crystalline samples of $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ under hydrostatic pressures up to 2 GPa and establish the temperature-pressure phase diagram of this material. The Néel temperature ($T_{\rm{N}}$) of $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ is slightly enhanced upon compression with $dT_{\rm{N}}/dp$ = 1.5 K/GPa. Above 1.2 GPa, $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ undergoes a first-order phase transition toward a nonmagnetic dimerized phase, with no traces of the magnetic phase observed above 1.8 GPa at low temperatures. The critical pressure of the structural dimerization is strongly temperature-dependent. This temperature dependence is well reproduced on the ab initio level by taking into account lower phonon entropy in the nonmagnetic phase. We further show that the initial increase in $T_{\rm{N}}$ of the magnetic phase is due to a weakening of the Kitaev interaction $K$ along with the enhancement of the Heisenberg term $J$ and off-diagonal anisotropy $Γ$. Our study reveals a common thread in the interplay of magnetism and dimerization in pressured Kitaev materials.

Role of Sb in the superconducting kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ revealed by its anisotropic compression

Pressure evolution of the superconducting kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ is studied with single-crystal x-ray diffraction and density-functional band-structure calculations. A highly anisotropic compression observed up to 5 GPa is ascribed to the fast shrinkage of the Cs-Sb distances and suppression of Cs rattling motion. This prevents Sb displacements required to stabilize the three-dimensional charge-density-wave (CDW) order and elucidates the disappearance of the CDW already at 2 GPa despite only minor changes in the electronic structure of the normal state. At higher pressures, vanadium bands still change only marginally, whereas antimony bands undergo a major reconstruction caused by the gradual formation of the interlayer Sb-Sb bonds. Our results exclude pressure tuning of vanadium kagome bands as the main mechanism for the non-trivial evolution of superconductivity in real-world kagome metals. Concurrently, we establish the central role of Sb atoms in the stabilization of a three-dimensional CDW and Fermi surface reconstruction.

Interplay of magnetism and dimerization in pressurized Kitaev material $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

We present magnetization measurements on polycrystalline $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ under hydrostatic pressures up to 3~GPa and construct the temperature-pressure phase diagram of this material. Our data confirm that magnetic order breaks down in a first-order phase transition at $p_{\rm{c}}$ $\approx$ 1.4~GPa and additionally reveal a step-like feature -- magnetic signature of structural dimerization -- that appears at $p_{\rm{c}}$ and shifts to higher temperatures upon further compression. Following the structural study by L. S. I. Veiga et al. [Phys. Rev. B 100, 064104 (2019)], we suggest that a partially dimerized phase with a mixture of magnetic and non-magnetic Ir$^{4+}$ sites develops above $p_{\rm{c}}$. This phase is thermodynamically stable between 1.7 and 2.7~GPa according to our ab initio calculations. It confines the magnetic Ir$^{4+}$ sites to weakly coupled tetramers with a singlet ground state and no long-range magnetic order. Our results rule out the formation of a pressure-induced spin-liquid phase in $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ and reveal peculiarities of the magnetism collapse transition in a Kitaev material. We also show that a compressive strain imposed by the pressure treatment of $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ enhances signatures of the 100~K magnetic anomaly at ambient pressure.

MoP$_3$SiO$_{11}$: a $4d^3$ honeycomb antiferromagnet with disconnected octahedra

We report the crystal structure and magnetic behavior of the $4d^3$ spin-$\frac32$ silicophosphate MoP$_3$SiO$_{11}$ studied by high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, thermodynamic measurements, and ab initio band-structure calculations. Our data revise the crystallographic symmetry of this compound and establish its rhombohedral space group ($R\bar 3c$) along with the geometrically perfect honeycomb lattice of the Mo$^{3+}$ ions residing in disconnected MoO$_6$ octahedra. Long-range antiferromagnetic order with the propagation vector $\mathbf k=0$ observed below $T_N=6.8$ K is a combined effect of the nearest-neighbor in-plane exchange coupling $J\simeq 2.6$ K, easy-plane single-ion anisotropy $D\simeq 2.2 $ K, and a weak interlayer coupling $J_c\simeq 0.8$ K. The 12% reduction in the ordered magnetic moment of the Mo$^{3+}$ ions and the magnon gap of $Δ\simeq 7$ K induced by the single-ion anisotropy further illustrate the impact of spin-orbit coupling on the magnetism. Our analysis puts forward single-ion anisotropy as an important ingredient of $4d^3$ honeycomb antiferromagnets despite their nominally quenched orbital moment.

Kitaev magnetism through the prism of lithium iridate

Fifteen years since its inception, the Kitaev model still boasts only a narrow group of material realizations. We review the progress in studying and understanding one of them, lithium iridate Li$_2$IrO$_3$ available in three polymorphs that host strong Kitaev interactions on spin lattices of different dimensionality and topology. We also discuss feasibility, effectiveness, and repercussions of tuning strategies based on the application of external pressure and chemical substitutions.

Toward cubic symmetry for Ir$^{4+}$: structure and magnetism of antifluorite K$_2$IrBr$_6$

Crystal structure, electronic state of Ir$^{4+}$, and magnetic properties of the antifluorite compound K$_2$IrBr$_6$ are studied using high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), thermodynamic and transport measurements, and ab initio calculations. The crystal symmetry is reduced from cubic at room temperature to tetragonal below 170 K and eventually to monoclinic below 122 K. These changes are tracked by the evolution of the non-cubic crystal-field splitting $Δ$ measured by RIXS. Non-monotonic changes in $Δ$ are ascribed to the competing effects of the tilt, rotation, and deformation of the IrBr$_6$ octahedra as well as tetragonal strain on the electronic levels of Ir$^{4+}$. The Néel temperature of $T_N=11.9$ K exceeds that of the isostructural K$_2$IrCl$_6$, and the magnitude of frustration on the fcc spin lattice decreases. We argue that the replacement of Cl by Br weakens electronic correlations and enhances magnetic couplings.

Experimental determination of the magnetic interactions of frustrated Cairo pentagon lattice materials

We present inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the Cairo pentagon lattice magnets Bi$_2$Fe$_4$O$_9$ and Bi$_4$Fe$_5$O$_{13}$F, supported by high field magnetisation measurements of Bi$_2$Fe$_4$O$_9$. Using linear spin wave theory and mean field analyses we determine the spin exchange interactions and single-ion anisotropy in these materials. The Cairo lattice is geometrically frustrated and consists of two inequivalent magnetic sites, both occupied by Fe$^{3+}$ ions and connected by two competing nearest neighbour interactions. We found that one of these interactions, coupling nearest neighbour spins on the three-fold symmetric sites, is extremely strong and antiferromagnetic. These strongly coupled dimers are then weakly coupled to a framework formed from spins occupying the other inequivalent site. In addition we found that the Fe$^{3+}$ $S=5/2$ spins have a non-negligible single-ion anisotropy, which manifests as a spin anisotropy gap in the neutron spectrum and a spin-flop transition in high field magnetisation measurements.

Magnetic hexamers interacting in layers in the (Na,K)$_2$Cu$_3$O(SO$_4)_3$ minerals

Magnetic properties and underlying magnetic models of the synthetic A$_2$Cu$_3$O(SO$_4)_3$ fedotovite (A = K) and puninite (A = Na) minerals, as well as the mixed euchlorine-type NaKCu$_3$O(SO$_4)_3$ are reported. We show that all these compounds contain magnetic Cu$_6$ hexamer units, which at temperatures below about 100 K act as single spin-1 entities. Weak interactions between these magnetic molecules lead to long-range order below $T_N$ = 3.4 K (A = Na), 4.7 K (A = NaK), and about 3.0 K (A = K). The formation of the magnetic order is elucidated by ab initio calculations that reveal two-dimensional inter-hexamer interactions within crystallographic $bc$ planes. This model indicates the presence of a weakly distorted square lattice of $S=1$ magnetic ions and challenges the earlier description of the A$_2$Cu$_3$O(SO$_4)_3$ minerals in terms of Haldane spin chains.

Field evolution of the spin-liquid candidate YbMgGaO$_4$

We report magnetization, heat capacity, thermal expansion, and magnetostriction measurements down to millikelvin temperatures on the triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$. Our data exclude the formation of the distinct $\frac13$ plateau phase observed in other triangular antiferromagnets, but reveal plateaulike features in second derivatives of the free energy, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat, at $μ_0H$ = 1.0 - 2.5 T for $H\parallel{}c$ and 2 - 5 T for $H\perp{}c$. Using Monte-Carlo simulations of a realistic spin Hamiltonian, we ascribe these features to nonmonotonic changes in the magnetization and the $\frac12$ plateau that is smeared out by the random distribution of exchange couplings in YbMgGaO$_4$.

Realising square and diamond lattice $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet models in the $α$ and $β$ phases of the coordination framework, KTi(C$_2$O$_4$)$_2\cdot$\textit{x}H$_2$O

We report the crystal structures and magnetic properties of two psuedo-polymorphs of the $S=1/2$ Ti$^{3+}$ coordination framework, KTi(C$_2$O$_4$)$_2\cdot$xH$_2$O. Single-crystal X-ray and powder neutron diffraction measurements on $α$-KTi(C$_2$O$_4$)$_2\cdot$xH$_2$O confirm its structure in the tetragonal $I4/mcm$ space group with a square planar arrangement of Ti$^{3+}$ ions. Magnetometry and specific heat measurements reveal weak antiferromagnetic interactions, with $J_1\approx7$ K and $J_2/J_1=0.11$ indicating a slight frustration of nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions. Below $1.8$ K, $α$ undergoes a transition to G-type antiferromagnetic order with magnetic moments aligned along the $c$ axis of the tetragonal structure. The estimated ordered moment of Ti$^{3+}$ in $α$ is suppressed from its spin-only value to $0.62(3)~μ_B$, thus verifying the two-dimensional nature of the magnetic interactions within the system. $β$-KTi(C$_2$O$_4$)$_2\cdot$2H$_2$O, on the other hand, realises a three-dimensional diamond-like magnetic network of Ti$^{3+}$ moments within a hexagonal $P6_222$ structure. An antiferromagnetic exchange coupling of $J\approx54$ K -- an order of magnitude larger than in $α$ -- is extracted from magnetometry and specific heat data. $β$ undergoes Néel ordering at $T_N=28$ K, with the magnetic moments aligned within the $ab$ plane and a slightly reduced ordered moment of $0.79~μ_B$ per Ti$^{3+}$. Through density-functional theory calculations, we address the origin of the large difference in the exchange parameters between the $α$ and $β$ psuedo-polymorphs. Given their observed magnetic behaviors, we propose $α$-KTi(C$_2$O$_4$)$_2\cdot$xH$_2$O and $β$-KTi(C$_2$O$_4$)$_2\cdot$2H$_2$O as close to ideal model $S=1/2$ Heisenberg square and diamond lattice antiferromagnets, respectively.

SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ under pressure: a first-principle study

Using density-functional theory (DFT) band-structure calculations, we study the crystal structure, the lattice dynamics, and the magnetic interactions in the Shastry-Sutherland magnet SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ under pressure, concentrating on experimentally relevant pressures up to 4 GPa. All tendencies inside the candidate intermediate phases are thoroughly worked out, including specific predictions for some Raman active phonon modes that could be used to pin down the nature of the intermediate phase.

Persistent spin dynamics in the pressurized spin-liquid candidate YbMgGaO$_4$

Single-crystal x-ray diffraction, density-functional band-structure calculations, and muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) are used to probe pressure evolution of the triangular spin-liquid candidate YbMgGaO$_4$. The rhombohedral crystal structure is retained up to at least 10 GPa and shows a nearly uniform compression along both in-plane and out-of-plane directions, whereas local distortions caused by the random distribution of Mg$^{2+}$ and Ga$^{3+}$ remain mostly unchanged. The $μ$SR data confirm persistent spin dynamics up to 2.6 GPa and down to 250 mK with no change in the muon relaxation rate. Longitudinal-field $μ$SR reveals power-law behavior of the spin-spin autocorrelation function, both at ambient pressure and upon compression.

Soft and anisotropic local moments in 4$d$ and 5$d$ mixed-valence M$_2$O$_9$ dimers

We investigate via exact diagonalization of finite clusters the electronic structure and magnetism of M$_2$O$_9$ dimers in the mixed-valence hexagonal perovskites A$_3$B'M$_2$O$_9$ for various different fillings of 4$d$ and 5$d$ transition-metal M ions. We find that the magnetic moments of such dimers are determined by a subtle interplay of spin-orbit coupling, Hund's coupling, and Coulomb repulsion, as well as the electron filling of the M ions. Most importantly, the magnetic moments are anisotropic and temperature-dependent. This behavior is a result of spin-orbit coupling, magnetic field effects, and the existence of several nearly-degenerate electronic configurations whose proximity allows occupation of excited states already at room temperature. This analysis is consistent with experimental susceptibility measurements for a variety of dimer-based materials. Furthermore, we perform a survey of A$_3$B'M$_2$O$_9$ materials and propose ground-state phase diagrams for the experimentally relevant M fillings of $d^{4.5}$, $d^{3.5}$ and $d^{2.5}$. Finally, our results show that the usually applied Curie-Weiss law with a constant magnetic moment cannot be used in these spin-orbit-coupled materials.

Mo$_6$Ga$_{31}$ endohedral cluster superconductor

Synthesis, crystal and electronic structure, and physical properties of the Mo$_6$Ga$_{31}$ endohedral cluster superconductor are reported. The compound has two crystallographic modifications, monoclinic and triclinic, in which the same {Mo$_{12}$Ga$_{62}$} building units are perpendicular or codirectional to each other, respectively. Monoclinic and triclinic structures of Mo$_6$Ga$_{31}$ possess qualitatively the same electronic density of states showing a high peak at the Fermi level. Both modifications are inherently present in the bulk specimen. Due to the proximity effect, bulk Mo$_6$Ga$_{31}$ exhibits single superconducting transition at the critical temperature of 8.2 K in zero magnetic field. The upper critical field, which is 7.8 T at zero temperature, shows clear enhancement with respect to the Werthamer-Helfand-Honenberg prediction. Accordingly, heat capacity measurements indicate strong electron-phonon coupling in the superconducting state with the large ratio of $2Δ(0)/(k_BT_c)=4.5$, where 2$Δ(0)$ is the full superconducting gap at zero temperature.

Two linear regimes in optical conductivity of a Type-I Weyl semimetal: the case of elemental tellurium

Employing high-pressure infrared spectroscopy we unveil the Weyl semimetal phase of elemental Te and its topological properties. The linear frequency dependence of the optical conductivity provides clear evidence for metallization of trigonal tellurium (Te-I) and the linear band dispersion above 3.0 GPa. This semimetallic Weyl phase can be tuned by increasing pressure further: a kink separates two linear regimes in the optical conductivity (at 3.7 GPa), a signature proposed for Type-II Weyl semimetals with tilted cones; this however reveals a different origin in trigonal tellurium. Our density-functional calculations do not reveal any significant tilting and suggest that Te-I remains in the Type-I Weyl phase, but with two valence bandsin the vicinity of the Fermi level. Their interplay giving rise to the peculiar optical conductivity behavior with more than one linear regime. Pressure above 4.3 GPa stabilizes the more complex Te-II and Te-III polymorphs, which are robust metals.

Optical signatures of phase transitions and structural modulation in elemental tellurium under pressure

A room-temperature infrared spectroscopy study of elemental tellurium at pressures up to 8.44 GPa in the energy range 0.015-2 eV is reported. Optical signatures of the high-pressure polymorphs are investigated and compared to the results of density-functional band-structure calculations. A Drude peak is first seen in the optical conductivity around 3.5 GPa indicating a semiconductor-to-metal transition within trigonal Te-I. A sharp increase in the Drude spectral weight and dc-conductivity around 4.3 GPa signals the transformation toward the triclinic Te-II polymorph. An absorption peak around 0.15 eV appears above 5 GPa concomitant with the gradual transformation of Te-II into the structurally similar but incommensurately modulated Te-III. Microscopically, this peak can only be reproduced within a sufficiently large commensurate approximant, suggesting the low-energy optical response as a fingerprint of the structural modulation.
