Magnetoelectric effect in superconductors with d-wave magnetization

We report on a study of the interplay between the supercurrent and spin-polarization in a two-dimensional superconducting system in the presence of a d-wave symmetric antiferromagnetic exchange interaction (altermagnetism). It is demonstrated that the supercurrent exhibits a transverse contribution in the presence of both constant and momentum-dependent exchange interactions. We also discuss the analog of the Edelstein effect for such magnetic material, showing that the induced spin polarization is quadratic in the supercurrent and d-wave symmetric.

Anisotropic resistivity and superconducting instability in ferroelectric metals

We propose a theoretical model of a ferroelectric metal where spontaneous electric polarization coexists with the conducting electrons. In our model we adopt a scenario when conducting electrons interact with two soft transverse optical phonons, generalize it to the case when there is a spontaneous ferroelectric polarization in the system, and show that a linear coupling to the phonons emerges as a result. We find that this coupling results in anisotropic electric transport which has a transverse to the current voltage drop. Importantly, the obtained transverse component of the resistivity has distinct linear dependence with temperature. Moreover, we show that the coupling enhances superconducting transition temperature of the ferroelectric metal. We argue that our results help to explain recent experiments on ferroelectric strontium titanate, as well as provide new experimental signatures to look for.

Unconventional superconductivity with preformed pairs in twisted bilayer graphene

We present a theory of superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene and analyze the superconducting phase diagram in presence of the magnetic field. Namely, we consider a model of a granular array hosting localized states, which are hybridized via the delocalized fermions in the inter-grain regions. We study a strong coupling situation when the interactions lead to an incoherent state with preformed Cooper pairs inside the grains. The Andreev scattering among different grains manifests itself through the global phase-coherent superconducting state at lower temperatures. We demonstrate that a new phase transition between the preformed Cooper pairing state and the Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell state might be induced by the spin pair-breaking effect of in-plane magnetic field. The upper critical magnetic field is shown to be enhanced in the strong coupling case.

Preformed Cooper pairs in flat-band semimetals

We study conditions for the emergence of the preformed Cooper pairs in materials hosting flat bands. As a particular example, we consider a semimetal, with a pair of three-band crossing points at which a flat band intersects with a Dirac cone, and focus on the s-wave intervalley pairing channel. The nearly dispersionless nature of the flat band at strong attraction between electrons promotes local Cooper pair formation so that the system may be modeled as an array of superconducting grains. Due to dispersive bands, Andreev scattering between the grains gives rise to the global phase-coherent superconductivity at low temperatures. We develop a mean-field theory to calculate transition temperature between the preformed Cooper pair state and the phase-coherent state for different interaction strengths in the Cooper channel. The transition temperature between semimetal and preformed Cooper pair phases is proportional to the interaction constant, the dependence of the transition temperature to the phase-coherent state on the interaction constant is weaker.

Electron-phonon coupling in copper intercalated Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$

We report charge and heat transport studies in copper-intercalated topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ hybrid devices. Measured conductivity shows impact of quantum corrections, electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. Our shot noise measurements reveal that heat flux displays a crossover between $T^2$ and $T^4$ with the increase of temperature. The results can be explained by a model of inelastic electron scattering on disorder, increasing the role of transverse acoustic phonons in the electron-phonon coupling process.

Collective modes in imbalanced nodal line semimetal

In this work, we investigate collective modes in a nodal line semimetal with two nodal-lines that have opposite spin polarization in the presence of spin population imbalance. We find the components of polarization operator taking into account the electron-electron exchange interaction and obtain the dispersion relations of collective modes for the bulk and surface states. There exist four modes in the bulk, among which one is gapless and other three are gapped. The gapless surface mode is sensitive to the boundary conditions.

Propagation of light through amplifying honeycomb photonic lattice

We consider light propagation through a ballistic amplifying photonic honeycomb lattice below the lasing threshold. Two sublattices of the system are formed by the wave-guides with different complex dielectric permittivities, which results in the non-Hermitian Dirac equation for electromagnetic field. We reveal that there exists a critical length of the amplifying region for which the photonic lattice exhibits an amplifier to generator transition. The transmission and reflection probabilities at the normal angle of incidence are strongly enhanced at a critical length of the system. We also comment on the sensitivity of amplification to the direction of incident light and the thickness of the amplifying region.

Theory of light diffusion through amplifying photonic lattice

We present a study of radiation propagation through disordered amplifying honeycomb photonic lattice, where elastic scattering provides feedback for light generation. To explore the interplay of different scattering mechanisms and the amplification background, we consider the Dirac Hamiltonian with a random potential and derive diffusion equation for the average intensity of light. The transmission coefficient and interference correction to the diffusion coefficient are enhanced near the lasing threshold. The transition between weak anti-localization and weak localization behaviours might be controlled by the parameters associated with the amplification and inter-valley scattering rates.

Casimir force between Weyl semimetals in a chiral medium

We study the Casimir effect in a system composed of two Weyl semimetals (WSMs) separated by a gap filled with a chiral medium. We calculate the optical response of the material to chiral photons in order to calculate the Casimir force. We find that if the medium between the two WSMs is a Faraday material, a repulsive Casimir force can be obtained, and for realistic experimental parameters its magnitude can be greatly enhanced at short distances of a few microns Moreover, in the system under consideration various parameters can be modified. Some of them are intrinsic to the materials employed (the absolute value of the Hall conductivity of the WSM, the Verdet constant of the Faraday material), while some of them can be manipulated externally even for a fixed sample, such as the external magnetic field and the orientation of the plates which determines the sign of their conductivity. Suitable combinations of these parameters can be used to switch from attraction to repulsion, and to place the trapping distance, in which no force acts on the plates, at any desired distance between them.

Antichiral and nematicity-wave superconductivity

Larkin-Ovchinnikov superconducting state has spontaneous modulation of Cooper pair density, while Fulde-Ferrell state has a spontaneous modulation in the phase of the order parameter. We report that a quasi-two-dimensional Dirac metal, under certain conditions has principally different inhomogeneous superconducting states that by contrast have spontaneous modulation in a submanifold of a multiple-symmetries-breaking order parameter. The first state we find can be viewed as a nematic superconductor where the nematicity vector spontaneously breaks rotational and translational symmetries due to spatial modulation. The other demonstrated state is a chiral superconductor with spontaneously broken time-reversal and translational symmetries. It is characterized by an order parameter, which forms a lattice pattern of alternating chiralities.

Disorder-induced exceptional points and nodal lines in Dirac superconductors

We consider the effect of disorder on the spectrum of quasiparticles in the point-node and nodal-line superconductors. Due to the anisotropic dispersion of quasiparticles disorder scattering may render the Hamiltonian describing these excitations non-Hermitian. Depending on the dimensionality of the system, we show that the nodes in the spectrum are replaced by Fermi arcs or Fermi areas bounded by exceptional points or exceptional lines, respectively. These features are illustrated by first considering a model of a proximity-induced superconductor in an anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) Dirac semimetal, where a Fermi arc in the gap bounded by exceptional points can be realized. We next show that the interplay between disorder and supercurrents can give rise to a 2D Fermi surface bounded by exceptional lines in three-dimensional (3D) nodal superconductors.

Disorder-driven exceptional lines and Fermi ribbons in tilted nodal-line semimetals

We consider the impact of disorder on the spectrum of three-dimensional nodal-line semimetals. We show that the combination of disorder and a tilted spectrum naturally leads to a non-Hermitian self-energy contribution that can split a nodal line into a pair of exceptional lines. These exceptional lines form the boundary of an open and orientable bulk Fermi ribbon in reciprocal space on which the energy gap vanishes. We find that the orientation and shape of such a disorder-induced bulk Fermi ribbon is controlled by the tilt direction and the disorder properties, which can also be exploited to realize a twisted bulk Fermi ribbon with nontrivial winding number. Our results put forward a paradigm for the exploration of non-Hermitian topological phases of matter.

Nonlinear Chiral Transport in Dirac Semimetals

We study the current of chiral charge density in a Dirac semimetal with two Dirac points in momentum space, subjected to an externally applied time dependent electric field and in the presence of a magnetic field. Based on the kinetic equation approach, we find contributions to the chiral charge current, that are proportional to the second power of the electric field and to the first and second powers of the magnetic field, describing the interplay of the chiral anomaly and the drift motion of electrons moving under the action of electric and magnetic fields.

Magnetoelectrics in Disordered Topological Insulator Josephson Junctions

We theoretically study the coupling of electric charge and spin polarization in an equilibrium and nonequilibrium electric transport across a two dimensional Josephson configuration comprised of disordered surface channels of a three dimensional topological insulator. In the equilibriun state of the system we predict the Edelstein effect, which is much more pronounced than its counterpart in conventional spin orbit coupled materials. Employing a quasiclassical Keldysh technique, we demonstrate that the ground state of system can be experimentally shifted into arbitrary macroscopic superconducting phase differences other than the standard `$0$' or `$π$', constituting a $ϕ_0$-junction, solely by modulating a quasiparticle flow injection into the junction. We propose a feasible experiment where the quasiparticles are injected into the topological insulator surface by means of a normal electrode and voltage gradient so that oppositely oriented stationary spin densities can be developed along the interfaces and allow for directly making use of the spin-momentum locking nature of Dirac fermions in the surface channels. The $ϕ_0$-state is proportional to the voltage difference applied between the injector electrode and superconducting terminals that calibrates the injection rate of particles and, therefore, the $ϕ_0$ shift.

Voltage induced conversion of helical to uniform nuclear spin polarization in a quantum wire

We study the effect of bias voltage on the nuclear spin polarization of a ballistic wire, which contains electrons and nuclei interacting via hyperfine interaction. In equilibrium, the localized nuclear spins are helically polarized due to the electron-mediated Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction. Focusing here on non-equilibrium, we find that an applied bias voltage induces a uniform polarization, from both helically polarized and unpolarized spins available for spin flips. Once a macroscopic uniform polarization in the nuclei is established, the nuclear spin helix rotates with frequency proportional to the uniform polarization. The uniform nuclear spin polarization monotonically increases as a function of both voltage and temperature, reflecting a thermal activation behavior. Our predictions offer specific ways to test experimentally the presence of a nuclear spin helix polarization in semiconducting quantum wires.

Nuclear Spin Relaxation in Rashba Nanowires

We study the nuclear spin relaxation in a ballistic nanowire with hyperfine and Rashba spin-orbit interactions (SOI) and in the presence of magnetic field and electron interactions. The relaxation rate shows pronounced peaks as function of magnetic field and chemical potential due to van Hove singularities in the Rashba bands. As a result, the regimes of weak and strong SOIs can be distinguished by the number of peaks in the rate. The relaxation rate increases with increasing magnetic field if both Rashba subbands are occupied, whereas it decreases if only the lowest one is occupied.

RKKY Interaction On Surfaces of Topological Insulators With Superconducting Proximity Effect

We consider the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between magnetic impurities on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator with proximity induced superconductivity. A superconductor placed on the top of the topological insulator induces a gap in the surface electron states and gives rise to a long-ranged in-plane antiferromagnetic RKKY interaction. This interaction is frustrated due to strong spin-orbit coupling, decays as $1/r$ for $r<ξ$, where $r$ is the distance between two magnetic impurities and $ξ$ the superconducting coherence length, and dominates over the ferromagnetic and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya type interactions for $r>ξ$. We find the condition for the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov intragap states that are bound to the magnetic impurities.
