Sigma models for quantum chaotic dynamics

We review the construction of the supersymmetric sigma model for unitary maps, using the color- flavor transformation. We then illustrate applications by three case studies in quantum chaos. In two of these cases, general Floquet maps and quantum graphs, we show that universal spectral fluctuations arise provided the pertinent classical dynamics are fully chaotic (ergodic and with decay rates sufficiently gapped away from zero). In the third case, the kicked rotor, we show how the existence of arbitrarily long-lived modes of excitation (diffusion) precludes universal fluctuations and entails quantum localization.

Quantum criticality of quasi one-dimensional topological Anderson insulators

We present an analytic theory of quantum criticality in the quasi one-dimensional topological Anderson insulators of class AIII and BDI. We describe the systems in terms of two parameters $(g,χ)$ representing localization and topological properties, respectively. Surfaces of half-integer valued $χ$ define phase boundaries between distinct topological sectors. Upon increasing system size, the two parameters exhibit flow similar to the celebrated two parameter flow describing the class A quantum Hall insulator. However, unlike the quantum Hall system, an exact analytical description of the entire phase diagram can be given. We check the quantitative validity of our theory by comparison to numerical transfer matrix computations.

Unconventional quantum criticality in the kicked rotor

The quantum kicked rotor (QKR) driven by $d$ incommensurate frequencies realizes the universality class of $d$-dimensional disordered metals. For $d>3$, the system exhibits an Anderson metal-insulator transition which has been observed within the framework of an atom optics realization. However, the absence of genuine randomness in the QKR reflects in critical phenomena beyond those of the Anderson universality class. Specifically, the system shows strong sensitivity to the algebraic properties of its effective Planck constant $\tilde h \equiv 4π/q$. For integer $q$, the system may be in a globally integrable state, in a `super-metallic' configuration characterized by diverging response coefficients, Anderson localized, metallic, or exhibit transitions between these phases. We present numerical data for different $q$-values and effective dimensionalities, with the focus being on parameter configurations which may be accessible to experimental investigations.

Multi-Terminal Coulomb-Majorana Junction

We study multiple helical nanowires in proximity to a common mesoscopic superconducting island, where Majorana fermion bound states are formed. We show that a weak finite charging energy of the center island may dramatically affect the low-energy behavior of the system. While for strong charging interactions, the junction decouples the connecting wires, interactions lower than a non-universal threshold may trigger the flow towards an exotic Kondo fixed point. In either case, the ideally Andreev reflecting fixed point characteristic for infinite capacitance (grounded) devices gets destabilized by interactions.

Quasiclassical theory of disordered multi-channel Majorana quantum wires

Multi-channel spin-orbit quantum wires, when subjected to a magnetic field and proximity coupled to s-wave superconductor, may support Majorana states. We study what happens to these systems in the presence of disorder. Inspired by the widely established theoretical methods of mesoscopic superconductivity, we develop a la Eilenberger a quasiclassical approach to topological nanowires valid in the limit of strong spin-orbit coupling. We find that the "Majorana number", distinguishing between the state with Majorana fermion (symmetry class B) and no Majorana (class D), is given by the product of two Pfaffians of gapped quasiclassical Green's functions fixed by right and left terminals connected to the wire. A numerical solution of the Eilenberger equations reveals that the class D disordered quantum wires are prone to the formation of the zero-energy anomaly (class D impurity spectral peak) in the local density of states which shares the key features of the Majorana peak. In this way we confirm the robustness of our previous conclusions [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 227005 (2012)] on a more restrictive system setup. Generally speaking, we find that the quasiclassical approach provides a highly efficient means to address disordered class D superconductors both in the presence and absence of topological structures.

Chaos-driven dynamics in spin-orbit coupled atomic gases

The dynamics, appearing after a quantum quench, of a trapped, spin-orbit coupled, dilute atomic gas is studied. The characteristics of the evolution is greatly influenced by the symmetries of the system, and we especially compare evolution for an isotropic Rashba coupling and for an anisotropic spin-orbit coupling. As we make the spin-orbit coupling anisotropic, we break the rotational symmetry and the underlying classical model becomes chaotic; the quantum dynamics is affected accordingly. Within experimentally relevant time-scales and parameters, the system thermalizes in a quantum sense. The corresponding equilibration time is found to agree with the Ehrenfest time, i.e. we numerically verify a ~log(1/h) scaling. Upon thermalization, we find the equilibrated distributions show examples of quantum scars distinguished by accumulation of atomic density for certain energies. At shorter time-scales we discuss non-adiabatic effects deriving from the spin-orbit coupled induced Dirac point. In the vicinity of the Dirac point, spin fluctuations are large and, even at short times, a semi-classical analysis fails.

A quantum dot close to Stoner instability: the role of Berry's Phase

The physics of a quantum dot with electron-electron interactions is well captured by the so called "Universal Hamiltonian" if the dimensionless conductance of the dot is much higher than unity. Within this scheme interactions are represented by three spatially independent terms which describe the charging energy, the spin-exchange and the interaction in the Cooper channel. In this paper we concentrate on the exchange interaction and generalize the functional bosonization formalism developed earlier for the charging energy. This turned out to be challenging as the effective bosonic action is formulated in terms of a vector field and is non-abelian due to the non-commutativity of the spin operators. Here we develop a geometric approach which is particularly useful in the mesoscopic Stoner regime, i.e., when the strong exchange interaction renders the system close the the Stoner instability. We show that it is sufficient to sum over the adiabatic paths of the bosonic vector field and, for these paths, the crucial role is played by the Berry phase. Using these results we were able to calculate the magnetic susceptibility of the dot. The latter, in close vicinity of the Stoner instability point, matches very well with the exact solution [I.S. Burmistrov, Y. Gefen, M.N. Kiselev, JETP Lett. 92 (2010) 179].

Class D spectral peak in Majorana quantum wires

Proximity coupled spin-orbit quantum wires have recently been shown to support midgap Majorana states at critical points. We show that in the presence of disorder these systems are prone to the buildup of a second bandcenter anomaly, which is of different physical origin but shares key characteristics with the Majorana state: it is narrow in width, insensitive to magnetic fields, carries unit spectral weight, and is rigidly tied to the band center. Depending on the parity of the number of subgap quasiparticle states, a Majorana mode does or does not coexist with the impurity generated peak. The strong 'entanglement' between the two phenomena may hinder an unambiguous detection of the Majorana by spectroscopic techniques.

Incoherent scatterer in a Luttinger liquid: a new paradigmatic limit

We address the problem of a Luttinger liquid with a scatterer that allows for both coherent and incoherent scattering channels. The asymptotic behavior at zero temperature is governed by a new stable fixed point: a Goldstone mode dominates the low energy dynamics, leading to a universal behavior. This limit is marked by equal probabilities for forward and backward scattering. Notwithstanding this non-trivial scattering pattern, we find that the shot noise as well as zero cross-current correlations vanish. We thus present a paradigmatic picture of an impurity in the Luttinger model, alternative to the Kane-Fisher picture.

Quantum chaos and effective thermalization

We demonstrate effective equilibration for unitary quantum dynamics under conditions of classical chaos. Focusing on the paradigmatic example of the Dicke model, we show how a constructive description of the thermalization process is facilitated by the Glauber $Q$ or Husimi function, for which the evolution equation turns out to be of Fokker-Planck type. The equation describes a competition of classical drift and quantum diffusion in contractive and expansive directions. By this mechanism the system follows a 'quantum smoothened' approach to equilibrium, which avoids the notorious singularities inherent to classical chaotic flows.

Equilibration and macroscopic quantum fluctuations in the Dicke model

We discuss the unitary quantum dynamics of the Dicke model (spin and oscillator coupled). A suitable quasiprobabilty representing the quantum state turns out to obey a Fokker-Planck equation, with drift terms representing the underlying classical Hamiltonian flow and diffusion terms describing quantum fluctuations. We show (by projecting the dynamics onto a co-moving Poincaré section) how the interplay of deterministic drift and quantum diffusion generates equilibration to the microcanonical density, under conditions of global classical chaos. The pertinent photon statistics reveals macroscopic quantum fluctuations.

Majorana Fermions in Strongly Interacting Helical Liquids

Majorana fermions were proposed to occur at edges and interfaces of gapped one-dimensional systems where phases with different topological character meet due to an interplay of spin-orbit coupling, proximity-induced superconductivity and external magnetic fields. Here we investigate the effect of strong particle interactions, and show that the helical liquid offers a mechanism that protects the very existence of Majorana edge states: whereas moderate interactions close the proximity gap which supports the edge states, in helical liquids the gap re-opens due to two-particle processes. However, gapless fermionic excitations occur at spatial proximity to the Majorana states at interfaces and may jeopardize their long term Majorana coherence.

Rare events in population genetics: Stochastic tunneling in a two-locus model with recombination

We study the evolution of a population in a two-locus genotype space, in which the negative effects of two single mutations are overcompensated in a high fitness double mutant. We discuss how the interplay of finite population size, $N$, and sexual recombination at rate $r$ affects the escape times $t_\mathrm{esc}$ to the double mutant. For small populations demographic noise generates massive fluctuations in $t_\mathrm{esc}$. The mean escape time varies non-monotonically with $r$, and grows exponentially as $\ln t_{\mathrm{esc}} \sim N(r - r^\ast)^{3/2}$ beyond a critical value $r^\ast$.

Quantum phase transitions in the quasi-periodic kicked rotor

We present a microscopic theory of transport in quasi-periodically driven environments (`kicked rotors'), as realized in recent atom optic experiments. We find that the behavior of these systems depends sensitively on the value of Planck's constant $\tilde h$: for irrational values of $\tilde h/(4π)$ they fall into the universality class of disordered electronic systems and we derive the microscopic theory of the ensuing localization phenomena. In contrast, for rational values the rotor-Anderson insulator acquires an infinite (static) conductivity and turns into a `super-metal'. Signatures of the corresponding metal/super-metal transition are discussed.

Periodic-orbit theory of universal level correlations in quantum chaos

Using Gutzwiller's semiclassical periodic-orbit theory we demonstrate universal behaviour of the two-point correlator of the density of levels for quantum systems whose classical limit is fully chaotic. We go beyond previous work in establishing the full correlator such that its Fourier transform, the spectral form factor, is determined for all times, below and above the Heisenberg time. We cover dynamics with and without time reversal invariance (from the orthogonal and unitary symmetry classes). A key step in our reasoning is to sum the periodic-orbit expansion in terms of a matrix integral, like the one known from the sigma model of random-matrix theory.

Microscopic theory of the Andreev gap

We present a microscopic theory of the Andreev gap, i.e. the phenomenon that the density of states (DoS) of normal chaotic cavities attached to superconductors displays a hard gap centered around the Fermi energy. Our approach is based on a solution of the quantum Eilenberger equation in the regime $t_D\ll t_E$, where $t_D$ and $t_E$ are the classical dwell time and Ehrenfest-time, respectively. We show how quantum fluctuations eradicate the DoS at low energies and compute the profile of the gap to leading order in the parameter $t_D/t_E$ .

Near action-degenerate periodic-orbit bunches: A skeleton of chaos

Long periodic orbits of hyperbolic dynamics do not exist as independent individuals but rather come in closely packed bunches. Under weak resolution a bunch looks like a single orbit in configuration space, but close inspection reveals topological orbit-to-orbit differences. The construction principle of bunches involves close self-"encounters" of an orbit wherein two or more stretches stay close. A certain duality of encounters and the intervening "links" reveals an infinite hierarchical structure of orbit bunches. -- The orbit-to-orbit action differences $ΔS$ within a bunch can be arbitrarily small. Bunches with $ΔS$ of the order of Planck's constant have constructively interfering Feynman amplitudes for quantum observables, and this is why the classical bunching phenomenon could yield the semiclassical explanation of universal fluctuations in quantum spectra and transport.

Nonequilibrium dephasing in Coulomb blockade quantum dots

We present a theory of zero-bias anomalies and dephasing rates for a Coulomb-blockaded quantum dot, driven out of equilibrium by coupling to voltage biased source and drain leads. We interpret our results in terms of the statistics of voltage fluctuations in the system.
