On Araujo's Theorem for flows

Araujo proved in his thesis \cite{A} that a $C^1$ generic surface diffeomorphism has either infinitely many sinks (i.e. attracting periodic orbits) or finitely many hyperbolic attractors with full Lebesgue measure basin. The goal of this paper is to extend this result to $C^1$ vector fields on compact connected boundaryless manifolds $M$ of dimension 3 (three-dimensional flows for short). More precisely, we shall prove that a $C^1$ generic three-dimensional flow without singularities has either infinitely many sinks or finitely many hyperbolic attractors with full Lebesgue measure basin.

Dominated Splittings for Flows with singularities

We obtain sufficient conditions for an invariant splitting over a compact invariant subset of a $C^1$ flow $X_t$ to be dominated. In particular, we reduce the requirements to obtain sectional hyperbolicity and hyperbolicity.

The Specification Property for Flows from the Robust and Generic Viewpoint

We prove that if $X|_Λ$ has the weak specification property robustly, where $Λ$ is an isolated set, then $Λ$ is a hyperbolic topologically mixing set and, as a consequence, if $X$ is a vector field that has the weak specification property robustly on a closed manifold $M$, then the flow $X_t$ is a topologically mixing Anosov flow. Also we prove that there exists a residual subset $\SR \in \Mundo$ so that if $X \in \SR$ and $X$ has the weak specification property, then $X_t$ is an Anosov flow.

Hyperbolicity in the Volume Preserving Scenario

Hayashi has extended a result of Mañé, proving that every diffeomorphism $f$ which has a $C^1$-neighborhood $\mathcal{U}$, where all periodic points of any $g\in\mathcal{U}$ are hyperbolic, it is an Axiom A diffeomorphism. Here, we prove the analogous result in the volume preserving scenario.

Fast decay of correlations of equilibrium states of open classes of non-uniformly expanding maps and potentials

We study the existence, uniqueness and rate of decay of correlation of equilibrium measures associated to robust classes of non-uniformly expanding local diffeomorphisms and Hölder continuous potentials. The approach used in this paper is the spectral analysis of the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius transfer operator. More precisely, we combine the expanding features of the eigenmeasures of the transfer operator with a Lasota-Yorke type inequality to prove the existence of an unique equilibrium measure with fast decay of correlations.

A pasting lemma and some applications for conservative systems

We prove that in a compact manifold of dimension $n\geq 2$, a $C^{1+α}$ volume-preserving diffeomorphisms that are robustly transitive in the $C^1$-topology have a dominated splitting. Also we prove that for 3-dimensional compact manifolds, an isolated robustly transitive invariant set for a divergence-free vector field can not have a singularity. In particular, we prove that robustly transitive divergence-free vector fields in 3-dimensional manifolds are Anosov. For this, we prove some ``pasting'' lemma, which allows to make perturbations in conservative systems.

On the periodic Schrödinger-Debye equation

We study local and global well-posedness of the initial value problem for the Schrödinger-Debye equation in the \emph{periodic case}. More precisely, we prove local well-posedness for the periodic Schrödinger-Debye equation with subcritical nonlinearity in arbitrary dimensions. Moreover, we derive a new \emph{a priori} estimate for the $H^1$ norm of solutions of the periodic Schrödinger-Debye equation. A novel phenomena obtained as a by-product of this \emph{a priori} estimate is the global well-posedness of the periodic Schrödinger-Debye equation in dimensions $1,2$ and 3 \emph{without} any smallness hypothesis of the $H^1$ norm of the initial data in the ``focusing'' case.

Maximal entropy measures for Viana maps

In this note we construct measures of maximal entropy for a certain class of maps with critical points called Viana maps. The main ingredients of the proof are the non-uniform expansion features and the slow recurrence (to the critical set) of generic points with respect to the natural candidates for attaining the topological entropy.

Rough solutions for the periodic Schrödinger - Kortweg-deVries system

We prove two new mixed sharp bilinear estimates of Schrödinger-Airy type. In particular, we obtain the local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem of the Schrödinger - Kortweg-deVries (NLS-KdV) system in the \emph{periodic setting}. Our lowest regularity is $H^{1/4}\times L^2$, which is somewhat far from the naturally expected endpoint $L^2\times H^{-1/2}$. This is a novel phenomena related to the periodicity condition. Indeed, in the continuous case, Corcho and Linares proved local well-posedness for the natural endpoint $L^2\times H^{-{3/4}+}$. Nevertheless, we conclude the global well-posedness of the NLS-KdV system in the energy space $H^1\times H^1$ using our local well-posedness result and three conservation laws discovered by M. Tsutsumi.

A Pasting Lemma I: the case of vector fields

We prove a perturbation (pasting) lemma for conservative (and symplectic) systems. This allows us to prove that $C^{\infty}$ volume preserving vector fields are $C^1$-dense in $C^{1}$ volume preserving vector fields (After the conclusion of this work, Ali Tahzibi pointed out to us that this result was proved in 1979 by Carlos Zuppa, although his proof is different from ours.). Moreover, we obtain that $C^1$ robustly transitive conservative flows in three-dimensional manifolds are Anosov and we conclude that there are no geometrical Lorenz-like sets for conservative flows. Also, by-product of the version of our pasting lemma for conservative diffeomorphisms, we show that $C^1$-robustly transitive conservative $C^2$-diffeomorphisms admits a dominated splitting, thus solving a question posed by Bonatti-Diaz-Pujals. In particular, stably ergodic diffeomorphisms admits a dominated splitting.

Equilibrium States for Random Non-uniformly Expanding Maps

We show that, for a robust ($C^2$-open) class of random non-uniformly expanding maps, there exists equilibrium states for a large class of potentials. In particular, these sytems have measures of maximal entropy. These results also give a partial answer to a question posed by Liu-Zhao. The proof of the main result uses an extension of techniques in recent works by Alves-Araújo, Alves-Bonatti-Viana and Oliveira.

Immersions with fractal set of points of zero Gauss-Kronecker curvature

We construct, for any ``good'' Cantor set $F$ of $S^{n-1}$, an immersion of the sphere $S^n$ with set of points of zero Gauss-Kronecker curvature equal to $F\times D^{1}$, where $D^{1}$ is the 1-dimensional disk. In particular these examples show that the theorem of Matheus-Oliveira strictly extends two results by do Carmo-Elbert and Barbosa-Fukuoka-Mercuri.

Decidability of chaos for some families of dynamical systems

We show that existence of positive Lyapounov exponents and/or SRB measures are undecidable (in the algorithmic sense) properties within some parametrized families of interesting dynamical systems: quadratic family and Hénon maps. Because the existence of positive exponents (or SRB measures) is, in a natural way, a manifestation of ``chaos'', these results may be understood as saying that the chaotic character of a dynamical system is undecidable. Our investigation is directly motivated by questions asked by Carleson and Smale in this direction.

$L^p$-generic cocycles have one-point Lyapunov spectrum

We show the sum of the first $k$ Lyapunov exponents of linear cocycles is an upper semicontinuous function in the $L^p$ topologies, for any $1 \le p \le \infty$ and $k$. This fact, together with a result from Arnold and Cong, implies that the Lyapunov exponents of the $L^p$-generic cocycle, $p<\infty$, are all equal.
