Hybrid stars among mass gap objects are excluded by twin stars at $1.4\,M_\odot$

We investigate the question whether compact objects in the so called mass gap ($2.5 < M/M_\odot < 5.0$) can be neutron stars or hybrid stars. Using a generic hybrid star equation of state with a first-order deconfinement transition, we map the allowed parameter space in a Seidov-type diagram and confront it with modern mass--radius constraints. We find that mass-gap hybrid stars require an extremely early onset of deconfinement and very stiff quark matter. The Bayesian analysis, however, favors equations of state with deconfinement at typical neutron-star masses around $1.4\,M_\odot$ with mass-twin stars that, if confirmed, would rule out hybrid stars as candidates for observed mass-gap compact objects.

Observational Probes of the Neutron Star Equation of State with Hyperons, Bosonic Dark Matter, and Quark Matter

Context. The presence of dark matter in neutron stars is of growing interest due to its potential impact on the structure and observable properties of these objects. Among the various candidates, the hypothetical sexaquark has emerged as a promising bosonic dark matter particle, potentially forming under extreme conditions in neutron star cores. Aims. We investigate whether a hybrid neutron star model that includes hyperons, bosonic dark matter (in the form of sexaquarks), and deconfined quark matter can satisfy all current observational constraints. We particularly focus on identifying the range of sexaquark masses consistent with mass-radius measurements and the tidal deformability limit. Methods. We used the DD2Y-T model for the hadronic phase, which includes hyperons, and a nonlocal Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model for the deconfined quark phase. The phase transition was modeled as a smooth crossover using the replacement interpolation construction method. Sexaquark-baryon interactions were introduced via an effective mass shift representing repulsion. We incorporated the full set of current observational data, including NICER measurements of PSRs J0437-4715 and newly published J0614-3329 data, and performed a Bayesian analysis to constrain the sexaquark mass. Results. Our results show that the presence of the sexaquark softens the equation of state, enabling the hybrid model to satisfy both the radius and tidal deformability constraints around the canonical 1.4 M_\odot neutron stars. We find that hybrid EOSs with a sexaquark mass around 1900 MeV are in agreement with all available constraints, including those from HESS J1731-347 and PSR J0952-0607, which represent the lowest and highest mass neutron stars observed to date. The Bayesian analysis favors a sexaquark mass range of 1885-1935 MeV, supporting the potential relevance of this exotic particle in neutron star interiors.

Bayesian inference favors quark matter in neutron star interiors

We perform a physics-informed Bayesian analyses of the equation of state of hybrid neutron stars that incorporates color-flavor-locked quark matter modeled by a three-flavor non-local Nambu-Jona-Lasinio framework with vector repulsion and diquark pairing. Contrary to the model-agnostic Bayesian analyses our scheme allows for distinguishing between the scenarios of neutron stars with quark cores and without them. The used quark model realizes asymptotic conformality at high densities in accordance with perturbative QCD. The hadronic sector is described by the density-dependent relativistic functional DD2Y-T, which satisfies chiral effective field theory constraints and includes hyperonic degrees of freedom. We construct a large set of candidate hybrid EOSs by varying the vector and diquark couplings and apply a Maxwell construction for the quark-hadron phase transition. Observational constraints from recent NICER pulsar mass-radius measurements and tidal deformability from GW170817 are incorporated into the likelihood. Depending on whether the observational data from the black widow pulsar PSR J0952-0607 and the HESS J1731-347 object are included to the analysis or not, the posterior distribution favors vector and diquark couplings around $(η_V,η_D)\simeq (0.82,0.40)$ or $(η_V,η_D)\simeq (0.64,0.36)$, respectively. This corresponds to equations of state that support two-solar-mass neutron stars with superconformal speed of sound and relatively low onset densities for deconfinement. Our findings indicate that the most probable hybrid EOSs are statistically preferred over the purely hadronic baseline. The corresponding probabilities of agreeing with the observational data differ by one or two orders of magnitude depending on the data set used. This suggests that quark cores may exist in all observed neutron stars.

Bayesian analysis of hybrid neutron star EOS constraints within an instantaneous nonlocal chiral quark matter model

We present a physics-informed Bayesian analysis of equation of state constraints using observational data for masses, radii and tidal deformability of pulsars and a generic class of hybrid neutron star equation of state with color superconducting quark matter on the basis of a recently developed nonlocal chiral quark model. The nuclear matter phase is described within a relativistic density functional model of the DD2 class and the phase transition is obtained by a Maxwell construction. We find the region in the two-dimensional parameter space spanned by the vector meson coupling and the scalar diquark coupling, where three conditions are fulfilled: (1) the Maxwell construction can be performed, \mbox{(2) the maximum} mass of the hybrid neutron star is not smaller than \mbox{2.0 M$_\odot$} and (3) the onset density of the phase transition is not below the nuclear saturation density $n_0=0.15$ fm$^{-3}$. The result of this study shows that the favorable neutron star equation of state has low onset masses for the occurrence of a color superconducting quark matter core between 0.5-0.7 $M_\odot$ and maximum masses in the range 2.15-2.22 $M_\odot$. In the typical mass range of 1.2-2.0 $M_\odot$, the radii of these stars are between 11.9 and 12.4 km, almost independent of the mass. In principle, hybrid stars would allow for larger maximum masses than provided by the hadronic reference equation of state.

Special point "trains" in the M-R diagram of hybrid stars

We present a systematic investigation of the possible locations for the special point (SP), a unique feature of hybrid neutron stars in the mass-radius diagram. The study is performed within the two-phase approach where the high-density (quark matter) phase is described by the covariant nonlocal Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (nlNJL) model equation of state (EOS) which is shown to be equivalent to a constant-sound-speed (CSS) EOS. For the nuclear matter phase around saturation density different relativistic density functional EOSs are used: DD2p00, its excluded-volume modification DD2p40 and the hypernuclear EOS DD2Y-T. In the present contribution we apply the Maxwell construction scheme for the deconfinement transition and demonstrate that a simultaneous variation of the vector and diquark coupling constants results in the occurrence of SP "trains" which are invariant against changing the nuclear matter EOS. We propose that the SP train corresponding to a variation of the diquark coupling at constant vector coupling is special since it serves as a lower bound for the line of maximum masses and accessible radii of massive hybrid stars.

Studying the parameters of the extended $σ$-$ω$ model for neutron star matter

In this work we study the parameters of the extended $σ$-$ω$ model for neutron star matter by a Bayesian analysis on state-of-the-art multi-messenger astronomy observations, namely mass, radius and tidal deformabilities. We have considered three parameters of the model, the Landau mass $m_L$, the nuclear compressibility $K_0$, and the value of the symmetry energy $S_0$, all at saturation density $n_0$. As a result, we are able to estimate the values of the Landau mass of f $m_L = 739\pm17$ MeV, whereas the values of $K_0$ and $S_0$ fall within already known empirical values. Furthermore, for neutron stars we find the most probable value of 13 km $<R_{1.4}<$ 13.5 km and the upper mass limit of $M_{max} \approx 2.2$ M$_{\odot}$.

Studying the Landau mass parameter of the extended $σ$-$ω$ model for neutron star matter

We present a Bayesian analysis of the Landau mass within the extended $σ$-$ω$ model for neutron star matter. To this purpose, we consider the mass measurement of the object PSR 0740+6620, the tidal deformability estimation from the GW170817 and the mass-radius estimate of PSR J0030+0451 by NICER. Using Landau mass as free parameter of the theory, we rely on the prediction power of the Bayesian method to find the best value for this nuclear quantity.

Was GW170817 a canonical neutron star merger? Bayesian analysis with a third family of compact stars

We investigate the possibility that GW170817 has not been the merger of two conventional neutron stars (NS) but involved at least one if not two hybrid stars with a quark matter core which might even belong to a third family of compact stars. To this end, we develop a Bayesian analysis method for selecting the most probable equation of state (EoS) under a set of constraints from compact star physics, which now also include the tidal deformability from GW170817 and the first result for the mass and radius determination for PSR J0030+0451 by NICER. We apply this method for the first time to a two-parameter family of hybrid EoS based on the DD2 model with nucleonic excluded volume for hadronic matter and the color superconducting generalized nlNJL model for quark matter. The model has a variable onset of deconfinement and can mimic the effects of pasta phases with the possibility of a third family of hybrid stars in the mass-radius ($M-R$) diagram. The main findings of this study are that: 1) the presence of multiple configurations for a given mass (twins) corresponds to a set of disconnected lines in the diagram of tidal deformabilities for binary mergers, so that merger events from the same mass range may result in a probability landscape with different peak positions; 2) the Bayesian analysis with the above observational constraints favors an early onset of the deconfinement transition, at masses of $M_{\rm onset}\le 0.8~M_\odot$ with a $M-R$ relationship that in the range of observed neutron star masses is almost indistinguishable from that of a soft hadronic APR EoS; 3) a few yet fictitious measurements of the NICER experiment with a $1σ$ range that is half of the present value and different mass and radius would change the posterior likelihood so that hybrid EoS with a phase transition onset in the range $M_{\rm onset} = 1.1 - 1.6~M_\odot $ would be favored.

Accretion-induced collapse to third family compact stars as trigger for eccentric orbits of millisecond pulsars in binaries

A numerical rotating neutron star solver is used to study the temporal evolution of accreting neutron stars using a multi-polytrope model for the nuclear equation of state named ACB5. The solver is based on a quadrupole expansion of the metric, but confirms the results of previous works, revealing the possibility of an abrupt transition of a neutron star from a purely hadronic branch to a third-family branch of stable hybrid stars, passing through an unstable intermediate branch. The accretion is described through a sequence of stationary rotating {stellar} configurations which lose angular momentum through magnetic dipole emission while, at the same time, gaining angular momentum through mass accretion. The model has several free parameters which are inferred from observations. The mass accretion scenario is studied in dependence on the effectiveness of angular momentum transfer which determines at which spin frequency the neutron star will become unstable against gravitational collapse to the corresponding hybrid star on the stable third-family branch. It is conceivable that the neutrino burst which accompanies the deconfinement transition may trigger a pulsar kick which results in the eccentric orbit. A consequence of the present model is the prediction of a correlation between the spin frequency of the millisecond pulsar in the eccentric orbit and its mass at birth.

Astrophysical aspects of general relativistic mass twin stars

In this chapter we will introduce an effective equation of state (EoS) model based on polytropes that serves to study the so called "mass twins" scenario, where two compact stars have approximately the same mass but (significant for observation) quite different radii. Stellar mass twin configurations are obtained if a strong first-order phase transition occurs in the interior of a compact star. In the mass-radius diagram of compact stars, this will lead to a third branch of gravitationally stable stars with features that are very distinctive from those of white dwarfs and neutron stars. We discuss rotating hybrid star sequences in the slow rotation approximation and in full general relativity and draw conclusions for an upper limit on the maximum mass of nonrotating compact stars that has recently be deduced from the observation of the merger event GW170817.

Performance Analysis of Effective Symbolic Methods for Solving Band Matrix SLAEs

This paper presents an experimental performance study of implementations of three symbolic algorithms for solving band matrix systems of linear algebraic equations with heptadiagonal, pentadiagonal, and tridiagonal coefficient matrices. The only assumption on the coefficient matrix in order for the algorithms to be stable is nonsingularity. These algorithms are implemented using the GiNaC library of C++ and the SymPy library of Python, considering five different data storing classes. Performance analysis of the implementations is done using the high-performance computing (HPC) platforms "HybriLIT" and "Avitohol". The experimental setup and the results from the conducted computations on the individual computer systems are presented and discussed. An analysis of the three algorithms is performed.

Two novel approaches to the hadron-quark mixed phase in compact stars

First-order phase transitions, like the liquid-gas transition, proceed via formation of structures such as bubbles and droplets. In strongly interacting compact star matter, at the crust-core transition, but also at the hadron-quark transition in the core, these structures form different shapes dubbed "pasta phases". We describe two methods to obtain one-parameter families of hybrid equations of state (EoS) which mimic the thermodynamic behavior of pasta phases in between a low-density hadron and a high-density quark matter phase, thus generalizing the Maxwell construction. The first method replaces the behavior of pressure vs. chemical potential in a finite region around the critical %chemical potential pressure of the Maxwell construction by a polynomial interpolation. The second method uses extrapolations of the hadronic and quark matter EoS beyond the Maxwell point to define a mixing of both with weight functions bounded by finite limits around the Maxwell point. We apply both methods to the case of a hybrid EoS with a strong first order transition that entails the formation of a third family of compact stars and the corresponding mass twin phenomenon. We investigate for both models the robustness of this phenomenon against variation of the single parameter, the pressure increment at the critical chemical potential which quantifies the deviation from the Maxwell construction. We also show sets of results for other compact star observables than mass and radius, namely the moment of inertia and the baryon mass.

Performance Analysis of Effective Methods for Solving Band Matrix SLAEs after Parabolic Nonlinear PDEs

This paper presents an experimental performance study of implementations of three different types of algorithms for solving band matrix systems of linear algebraic equations (SLAEs) after parabolic nonlinear partial differential equations -- direct, symbolic, and iterative, the former two of which were introduced in Veneva and Ayriyan (arXiv:1710.00428v2). An iterative algorithm is presented -- the strongly implicit procedure (SIP), also known as the Stone method. This method uses the incomplete LU (ILU(0)) decomposition. An application of the Hotelling-Bodewig iterative algorithm is suggested as a replacement of the standard forward-backward substitutions. The upsides and the downsides of the SIP method are discussed. The complexity of all the investigated methods is presented. Performance analysis of the implementations is done using the high-performance computing (HPC) clusters "HybriLIT" and "Avitohol". To that purpose, the experimental setup and the results from the conducted computations on the individual computer systems are presented and discussed.

Effective Methods for Solving Band SLEs after Parabolic Nonlinear PDEs

A class of models of heat transfer processes in a multilayer domain is considered. The governing equation is a nonlinear heat-transfer equation with different temperature-dependent densities and thermal coefficients in each layer. Homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions and ideal contact ones are applied. A finite difference scheme on a special uneven mesh with a second-order approximation in the case of a piecewise constant spatial step is built. This discretization leads to a pentadiagonal system of linear equations (SLEs) with a matrix which is neither diagonally dominant, nor positive definite. Two different methods for solving such a SLE are developed -- diagonal dominantization and symbolic algorithms.

Model of the Phase Transition Mimicking the Pasta Phase in Cold and Dense Quark-Hadron Matter

A simple mixed phase model mimicking so-called "pasta" phases in the quark-hadron phase transition is developed and applied to static neutron stars for the case of DD2 type hadonic and NJL type quark matter models. The influence of the mixed phase on the mass-radius relation of the compact stars is investigated. Model parameters are chosen such that the results are in agreement with the observational constraints for masses and radii of pulsars.

OpenCL/CUDA algorithms for parallel decoding of any irregular LDPC code using GPU

The development of multicore architectures supporting parallel data processing has led to a paradigm shift, which affects communication systems significantly. This article provides a scalable parallel approach of an iterative LDPC decoder, presented in a tutorial-based style. It is suitable for decoding any irregular LDPC code without the limitation of the maximum node degree, and it includes a parallel calculation of the syndrome. This is the main difference from algorithms presented so far. The proposed approach can be implemented in applications supporting massive parallel computing, such as GPU or FPGA devices. The implementation of the LDPC decoder with the use the OpenCL and CUDA frameworks is discussed and the performance evaluation is given at the end of this contribution.

Algorithm and Simulation of Heat Conduction Process for Design of a Thin Multilayer Technical Device

A model of a multilayer device with non-trivial geometrical structure and nonlinear dependencies of thermodynamic material properties at cryogenic temperatures is suggested. A considered device, called cryogenic cell, is intended for use in multicharged ion sources for pulse injection of gaseous species into ionization space of ion sources. The main requirement for the cryogenic cell operation is the permanent opening and closing for gaseous species injection in a millisecond range, while cell closing is provided by freezing of the gaseous specie at the outer surface of the cell and the cell opening - by the corresponding pulse heating of the cell surface up to definite temperature. The thermal behaviour of the device in a millisecond time range is simulated. The algorithm for solving the non-stationary heat conduction problem with a time-dependent periodical heating source is suggested. The algorithm is based on finite difference explicit-implicit method. The OpenCL realization of the algorithm is discussed. The optimal particular choice of the parameters to provide the required pulse temperature regime of the designed cryogenic cell for the chosen working gas is presented. Based on these results further optimization can be formulated.
