Magnetic domain engineering in antiferromagnetic CuMnAs and Mn$_2$Au devices

Antiferromagnetic materials hold potential for use in spintronic devices with fast operation frequencies and field robustness. Despite the rapid progress in proof-of-principle functionality in recent years, there has been a notable lack of understanding of antiferromagnetic domain formation and manipulation, which translates to either incomplete or non-scalable control of the magnetic order. Here, we demonstrate simple and functional ways of influencing the domain structure in CuMnAs and Mn2Au, two key materials of antiferromagnetic spintronics research, using device patterning and strain engineering. Comparing x-ray microscopy data from two different materials, we reveal the key parameters dictating domain formation in antiferromagnetic devices and show how the non-trivial interaction of magnetostriction, substrate clamping and edge anisotropy leads to specific equilibrium domain configurations. More specifically, we observe that patterned edges have a significant impact on the magnetic anisotropy and domain structure over long distances, and we propose a theoretical model that relates short-range edge anisotropy and long-range magnetoelastic interactions. The principles invoked are of general applicability to the domain formation and engineering in antiferromagnetic thin films at large, which will pave the way towards realizing truly functional antiferromagnetic devices.

Investigating the Electromechanical Behavior of Unconventionally Ferroelectric $Hf_{0.5}Zr_{0.5}O_{2}$-based Capacitors Through Operando Nanobeam X-ray Diffraction

Understanding various aspects of ferroelectricity in hafnia-based nanomaterials is of vital importance for the development of future non-volatile memory and logic devices. Here, the unconventional and weak electromechanical response of epitaxial $La_{0.67}Sr_{0.33}MnO_{3}$/$Hf_{0.5}Zr_{0.5}O_{2}$/$La_{0.67}Sr_{0.33}MnO_{3}$ ferroelectric capacitors is investigated, via the sensitivity offered by nanobeam X-ray diffraction experiments during application of electrical bias. It is shown that the pristine rhombohedral phase exhibits a negative linear piezoelectric effect with piezoelectric coefficient ($d_{33}$) ~ -0.5 to -0.8 pm$V^{-1}$. First-principles calculations support an intrinsic negative piezoresponse. In addition, it is found that the piezoelectric response is suppressed above the coercive voltage. For higher voltages, and with the onset of DC conductivity throughout the capacitor, a second-order effect is observed. The electromechanical response observed in this work is clearly different from that of normal ferroelectrics, again underlining the unconventional nature of polarization switching in the samples.

Three-dimensional coherent Bragg imaging of rotating nanoparticles

Bragg Coherent Diffraction Imaging (BCDI) is a powerful strain imaging tool, often limited by beam-induced sample instability for small particles and high power densities. Here, we devise and validate an adapted diffraction volume assembly algorithm, capable of recovering three-dimensional datasets from particles undergoing uncontrolled and unknown rotations. We apply the method to gold nanoparticles which rotate under the influence of a focused coherent X-ray beam, retrieving their three-dimensional shapes and strain fields. The results show that the sample instability problem can be overcome, enabling the use of fourth generation synchrotron sources for BCDI to their full potential.
