Counting eigenvalues of Schrödinger operator with complex fast decreasing potential

We give a sharp estimate of the number of zeros of analytic functions in the unit disc belonging to analytic quasianalytic Carleman--Gevrey classes. As an application, we estimate the number of the eigenvalues for discrete Schrödinger operators with rapidly decreasing complex-valued potentials, and, more generally, for non-symmetric Jacobi matrices.

Summability properties of Gabor expansions

We show that there exist complete and minimal systems of time-frequency shifts of Gaussians in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ which are not strong Markushevich basis (do not admit the spectral synthesis). In particular, it implies that there is no linear summation method for general Gaussian Gabor expansions. On the other hand we prove that the spectral synthesis for such Gabor systems holds up to one dimensional defect.

Nevanlinna domains with large boundaries

We establish the existence of Nevanlinna domains with large boundaries. In particular, these domains can have boundaries of positive planar measure. The sets of accessible points can be of any Hausdorff dimension between $1$ and $2$. As a quantitative counterpart of these results, we construct rational functions univalent in the unit disc with extremely long boundaries for a given amount of poles.

Univalent functions in model spaces: revisited

Motivated by a problem in approximation theory, we find a necessary and sufficient condition for a model (backward shift invariant) subspace $K_\varTheta = H^2\ominus \varTheta H^2$ of the Hardy space $H^2$ to contain a bounded univalent function.

The Young type theorem in weighted Fock spaces

We prove that for every radial weighted Fock space, the system biorthogonal to a complete and minimal system of reproducing kernels is also complete under very mild regularity assumptions on the weight. This result generalizes a theorem by Young on reproducing kernels in the Paley--Wiener space and a recent result of Belov for the classical Bargmann--Segal--Fock space.

Spectra of stationary processes on Z

We will discuss a somewhat striking spectral property of finitely valued stationary processes on Z that says that if the spectral measure of the process has a gap then the process is periodic. We will give some extensions of this result and raise several related questions.

L^p-tauberian theorems and L^p-rates for energy decay

We prove $L^p$-analogues of the classical tauberian theorem of Ingham and Karamata, and its variations giving rates of decay. These results are applied to derive $L^p$-decay of operator families arising in the study of the decay of energy for damped wave equations and local energy for wave equations in exterior domains. By constructing some examples of critical behaviour we show that the $L^p$-rates of decay obtained in this way are best possible under our assumptions.

Entire functions of exponential type represented by pseudo-random and random Taylor series

We study the influence of the multipliers $ξ(n)$ on the angular distribution of zeroes of the Taylor series \[ F_ξ(z) = \sum_{n\ge 0} ξ(n) \frac{z^n}{n!}\,. \] We show that the distribution of zeroes of $ F_ξ$ is governed by certain autocorrelations of the sequence $ ξ$. Using this guiding principle, we consider several examples of random and pseudo-random sequences $ξ$ and, in particular, answer some questions posed by Chen and Littlewood in 1967. As a by-product we show that if $ξ$ is a stationary random integer-valued sequence, then either it is periodic, or its spectral measure has no gaps in its support. The same conclusion is true if $ξ$ is a complex-valued stationary ergodic sequence that takes values from a uniformly discrete set.

Wepable Inner Functions

Following Gorkin, Mortini, and Nikolski, we say that an inner function $I$ in $H^\infty$ of the unit disc has the WEP property if its modulus at a point $z$ is bounded from below by a function of the distance from $z$ to the zero set of $I$. This is equivalent to a number of properties, and we establish some consequences of this for $H^\infty/IH^\infty$. The bulk of the paper is devoted to "wepable" functions, i.e. those inner functions which can be made WEP after multiplication by a suitable Blaschke product. We prove that a closed subset $E$ of the unit circle is of finite entropy (i.e. is a Beurling-Carleson set) if and only if any singular measure supported on $E$ gives rise to a wepable singular inner function. As a corollary, we see that singular measures which spread their mass too evenly cannot give rise to wepable singular inner functions. Furthermore, we prove that the stronger property of porosity of $E$ is equivalent to a stronger form of wepability ("easy wepability") for the singular inner functions with support in $E$. Finally, we find out the critical decay rate of masses of atomic measures (with no restrictions on support) guaranteeing that the corresponding singular inner functions are easily wepable.

Pseudo-holomorphic functions at the critical exponent

We study Hardy classes on the disk associated to the equation $\bar\d w=α\bar w$ for $α\in L^r$ with $2\leq r<\infty$. The paper seems to be the first to deal with the case $r=2$. We prove an analog of the M.~Riesz theorem and a topological converse to the Bers similarity principle. Using the connection between pseudo-holomorphic functions and conjugate Beltrami equations, we deduce well-posedness on smooth domains of the Dirichlet problem with weighted $L^p$ boundary data for 2-D isotropic conductivity equations whose coefficients have logarithm in $W^{1,2}$. In particular these are not strictly elliptic. Our results depend on a new multiplier theorem for $W^{1,2}_0$-functions.

Spectral synthesis in de Branges spaces

We solve completely the spectral synthesis problem for reproducing kernels in the de Branges spaces $\mathcal{H}(E)$. Namely, we describe the de Branges spaces $\mathcal{H}(E)$ such that all $M$-bases of reproducing kernels (i.e., complete and minimal systems $\{k_λ\}_{λ\inΛ}$ with complete biorthogonal $\{g_λ\}_{λ\inΛ}$) are strong $M$-bases (i.e., every mixed system $\{k_λ\}_{λ\inΛ\setminus\tilde Λ} \cup\{g_λ\}_{λ\in \tilde Λ}$ is also complete). Surprisingly this property takes place only for two essentially different classes of de Branges spaces: spaces with finite spectral measure and spaces which are isomorphic to Fock-type spaces of entire functions. The first class goes back to de Branges himself, the second class appeared in a recent work of A. Borichev and Yu. Lyubarskii. Moreover, we are able to give a complete characterisation of this second class in terms of the spectral data for $\mathcal{H}(E)$. In addition, we obtain some results about possible codimension of mixed systems for a fixed de Branges space $\mathcal{H}(E)$, and prove that any minimal system of reproducing kernels in $\mathcal{H}(E)$ is contained in an exact system of reproducing kernels.

Weighted integrability of polyharmonic functions

To address the uniqueness issues associated with the Dirichlet problem for the $N$-harmonic equation on the unit disk $\D$ in the plane, we investigate the $L^p$ integrability of $N$-harmonic functions with respect to the standard weights $(1-|z|^2)^α$. The question at hand is the following. If $u$ solves $Δ^N u=0$ in $\D$, where $Δ$ stands for the Laplacian, and [\int_\D|u(z)|^p (1-|z|^2)^α\diff A(z)<+\infty,] must then $u(z)\equiv0$? Here, $N$ is a positive integer, $α$ is real, and $0 β(N,p)$ there exist non-trivial functions $u$ with $Δ^N u=0$ of the given integrability, while for $α\leβ(N,p)$, only $u(z)\equiv0$ is possible. We also investigate the obstruction to uniqueness for the Dirichlet problem, that is, we study the structure of the functions in $\mathrm{PH}^p_{N,α}(\D)$ when this space is nontrivial. We find a fascinating structural decomposition of the polyharmonic functions -- the cellular (Almansi) expansion -- which decomposes the polyharmonic weighted $L^p$ in a canonical fashion. Corresponding to the cellular expansion is a tiling of part of the $(p,α)$ plane into cells. A particularly interesting collection of cells form the entangled region.

The finite rank theorem for Toeplitz operators in the Fock space

We consider Toeplitz operators in the Fock space, under rather general conditions imposed on the symbols. It is proved that if the operator has finite rank and the symbol is a function then the operator and the symbol should be zero. The method of proving is different from the one used previously for finite rank theorems, and it enables one to get rid of the compact support condition for symbols imposed previously.

Recent developments in spectral synthesis for exponential systems and for non-self-adjoint operators

We survey recent results concerning the hereditary completeness of some special systems of functions and the spectral synthesis problem for a related class of linear operators. We present a solution of the spectral synthesis problem for systems of exponentials in $L^2(-π, π)$. Analogous results are obtained for the systems of reproducing kernels in the de Branges spaces of entire functions. We also apply these results (via a functional model) to the spectral theory of rank one perturbations of compact self-adjoint operators.
