Irrational rotation dynamics for unimodal maps

The first result of the paper (Theorem 1.1) is an explicit construction of unimodal maps that are semiconjugate, on the post-critical set, to the circle rotation by an arbitrary irrational angle $θ\in(3/5,2/3)$. Our construction is a generalization of the construction by Milnor and Lyubich [LM] of the Fibonacci unimodal maps semi-conjugate to the circle rotation by the golden ratio. Generalizing a theorem by Milnor and Lyubich for the Fibonacci map, we prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the post-critical set of our unimodal maps is $0$, provided the denominators of the continued fraction of $θ$ are bounded (Theorem 1.2) or, in the case of quadratic polynomials, have sufficiently slow growth (Theorem 1.3).

Mean convergence of Markovian spherical averages for measure-preserving actions of the free group

Mean convergence of Markovian spherical averages is established for a measure-preserving action of a finitely-generated free group on a probability space. We endow the set of generators with a generalized Markov chain and establish the mean convergence of resulting spherical averages in this case under mild nondegeneracy assumptions on the stochastic matrix $Π$ defining our Markov chain. Equivalently, we establish the triviality of the tail sigma-algebra of the corresponding Markov operator. This convergence was previously known only for symmetric Markov chains, while the conditions ensuring convergence in our paper are inequalities rather than equalities, so mean convergence of spherical averages is established for a much larger class of Markov chains.

Lattice Point Asymptotics and Volume Growth on Teichmuller space

We apply some of the ideas of the Ph.D. Thesis of G. A. Margulis to Teichmuller space. Let x be a point in Teichmuller space, and let B_R(x) be the ball of radius R centered at x (with distances measured in the Teichmuller metric). We obtain asymptotic formulas as R tends to infinity for the volume of B_R(x), and also for for the cardinality of the intersection of B_R(x) with an orbit of the mapping class group.

Limit Theorems for Horocycle Flows

The main results of this paper are limit theorems for horocycle flows on compact surfaces of constant negative curvature. One of the main objects of the paper is a special family of horocycle-invariant finitely-additive Hoelder measures on rectifiable arcs. An asymptotic formula for ergodic integrals for horocycle flows is obtained in terms of the finitely-additive measures, and limit theorems follow as a corollary of the asymptotic formula. The objects and results of this paper are similar to those in [15], [16], [4] and [5] for translation flows on flat surfaces. The arguments are based on the classification of invariant distributions for horocycle flows established in [12].

Cesaro convergence of spherical averages for measure-preserving actions of Markov semigroups and groups

Cesaro convergence of spherical averages is proven for measure-preserving actions of Markov semigroups and groups. Convergence in the mean is established for functions in $L^p$, $1\le p<\infty$, and pointwise convergence for functions in $L^\infty$. In particular, for measure-preserving actions of word hyperbolic groups (in the sense of Gromov) we obtain Cesaro convergence of spherical averages with respect to any symmetric set of generators.
