Long nonlinear internal waves and mixing in a three-layer stratified flow in the Boussinesq approximation

A one-dimensional long-wave model of an unsteady three-layer flow of a stratified fluid under a lid is proposed, taking into account turbulent mixing in the intermediate layer. In the Boussinesq approximation, the equations of motion are reduced to an evolutionary system of balance laws, which is hyperbolic for a small difference in velocities in the layers. Classes of stationary solutions are studied and the concept of subcritical (supercritical) three-layer stratified flow is introduced. Oscillating solutions are constructed that describe the spatial evolution of the mixing layer. The problem of transcritical flow over an obstacle is considered. Solutions are obtained that describe qualitatively different flow regimes on the leeward side of the obstacle. The proposed model is validated using experimental data and field observations on the entrainment of ambient fluid.

Formation and evolution of roll waves in a shallow free surface flow of a power-law fluid down an inclined plane

A laminar flow of a thin layer of mud down an inclined plane under the action of gravity is considered. The instability of a film flow and the formation of finite amplitude waves are studied in the framework of both two-dimensional governing equations of a power-law fluid and its depth-averaged hyperbolic simplification. Conditions of roll waves existence for these models are formulated in terms of Whitham criterion. Numerical calculations of the free surface evolution and the roll waves development are performed. It is shown that the roll waves amplitude obtained by the 2D equations is slightly larger than for the 1D model. Moreover, for certain flow parameters, small perturbations of the basic solution grow for the 2D equations and decay for the depth-averaged model. A two-parameter class of exact piecewise-smooth solutions of the 1D model is obtained and a comparison with a numerical solution is made. In the region of these parameters, diagrams of the roll waves existence are constructed.

Hyperbolic model of internal solitary waves in a three-layer stratified fluid

We derive a new hyperbolic model describing the propagation of internal waves in a stratified shallow water with a non-hydrostatic pressure distribution. The construction of the hyperbolic model is based on the use of additional `instantaneous' variables. This allows one to reduce the dispersive multi-layer Green--Naghdi model to a first-order system of evolution equations. The main attention is paid to the study of three-layer flows over uneven bottom in the Boussinesq approximation with the additional assumption of hydrostatic pressure in the intermediate layer. The hyperbolicity conditions of the obtained equations of three-layer flows are formulated and solutions in the class of travelling waves are studied. Based on the proposed hyperbolic and dispersive models, numerical calculations of the generation and propagation of internal solitary waves are carried out and their comparison with experimental data is given. Within the framework of the proposed three-layer hyperbolic model, a numerical study of the propagation and interaction of symmetric and non-symmetric soliton-like waves is performed.

Mixing layer and turbulent jet flow in a Hele--Shaw cell

A plane turbulent mixing in a shear flow of an ideal homogeneous fluid confined between two relatively close rigid walls is considered. The character of the flow is determined by interaction of vortices arising at the nonlinear stage of the Kelvin--Helmholtz instability development and by turbulent friction. In the framework of the shallow water theory and a three-layer representation of the flow, one-dimensional models of a mixing layer are proposed. The obtained equations allow one to determine averaged boundaries of the region of intense fluid mixing. Stationary solutions of the governing equations are constructed and analysed. Using the averaged flow characteristics obtained by one-dimensional equations, a hyperbolic system for determining the velocity profile and Reynolds shear stress across the mixing layer is derived. Comparison with the experimental results of the evolution of turbulent jet flows in a Hele--Shaw cell shows that the proposed models provide a fairly accurate description of the average boundaries of the region of intense mixing, as well as the velocity profile and Reynolds shear stress across the mixing layer.

Hyperbolic Model for Free Surface Shallow Water Flows with Effects of Dispersion, Vorticity and Topography

We derive a hyperbolic system of equations approximating the two-layer dispersive shallow water model for shear flows recently proposed by Gavrilyuk, Liapidevskii \& Chesnokov (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 808, 2016, pp. 441--468). The use of this system for modelling the evolution of surface waves makes it possible to avoid the major numerical challenges in solving dispersive shallow water equations, which are connected with the resolution of an elliptic problem at each time instant and realization of non-reflecting conditions at the boundary of the calculation domain. It also allows one to reduce the computation time. The velocities of the characteristics of the obtained model are determined and the linear analysis is performed. Stationary solutions of the model are constructed and studied. Numerical solutions of the hyperbolic system are compared with solutions of the original dispersive model. It is shown that they almost coincide for large time intervals. The system obtained is applied to study non-stationary undular bores produced after interaction of a uniform flow with an immobile wall, non-hydrostatic shear flows over a local obstacle and the evolution of breaking solitary wave on a sloping beach.

Stability of shear shallow water flows with free surface

Stability of inviscid shear shallow water flows with free surface is studied in the framework of the Benney equations. This is done by investigating the generalized hyperbolicity of the integrodifferential Benney system of equations. It is shown that all shear flows having monotonic convex velocity profiles are stable. The hydrodynamic approximations of the model corresponding to the classes of flows with piecewise linear continuous and discontinuous velocity profiles are derived and studied. It is shown that these approximations possess Hamiltonian structure and a complete system of Riemann invariants, which are found in an explicit form. Sufficient conditions for hyperbolicity of the governing equations for such multilayer flows are formulated. The generalization of the above results to the case of stratified fluid is less obvious, however, it is established that vorticity has a stabilizing effect.

Viscosity-Stratified Flow in a Hele-Shaw Cell

A hierarchy of mathematical models describing viscosity-stratified flow in a Hele-Shaw cell is constructed. Numerical modelling of jet flow and development of viscous fingers with the influence of inertia and friction is carried out. One-dimensional multi-layer flows are studied. In the framework of three-layer flow the interpretation of the Saffman--Taylor instability is given. A kinematic-wave model of viscous fingering taking into account friction between the fluid layers is proposed. Comparison with calculations on the basis of two-dimensional equations shows that this model allows to determine the velocity of propagation and the thickness of the viscous fingers.

Stability analysis of shear flows in a Hele-Shaw cell

A mathematical model describing motion of an inhomogeneous incompressible fluid in a Hele-Shaw cell is considered. Linear stability analysis of shear flow class is provided. The role of inertia, linear friction and impermeable boundaries in Kelvin--Helmholtz instability development is studied. Hierarchy of simplified one-dimensional models of viscosity- and density-stratified flows is obtained in long-wave approximation. Interpretation of Saffman--Taylor instability development is given in the framework of these models.

Symmetries and exact solutions of the rotating shallow water equations

Lie symmetry analysis is applied to study the nonlinear rotating shallow water equations. The 9-dimensional Lie algebra of point symmetries admitted by the model is found. It is shown that the rotating shallow water equations are related with the classical shallow water model with the change of variables. The derived symmetries are used to generate new exact solutions of the rotating shallow equations. In particular, a new class of time-periodic solutions with quasi-closed particle trajectories is constructed and studied. The symmetry reduction method is also used to obtain some invariant solutions of the model. Examples of these solutions are presented with a brief physical interpretation.
