On the consistency of incomplete U-statistics under infinite second-order moments}

We derive a consistency result, in the $L_1$-sense, for incomplete U-statistics in the non-standard case where the kernel at hand has infinite second-order moments. Assuming that the kernel has finite moments of order $p(\geq 1)$, we obtain a bound on the $L_1$ distance between the incomplete U-statistic and its Dirac weak limit, which allows us to obtain, for any fixed $p$, an upper bound on the consistency rate. Our results hold for most classical sampling schemes that are used to obtain incomplete U-statistics.

Robust change point tests by bounded transformations

Classical moment based change point tests like the cusum test are very powerful in case of Gaussian time series with one change point but behave poorly under heavy tailed distributions and corrupted data. A new class of robust change point tests based on cusum statistics of robustly transformed observations is proposed. This framework is quite flexible, depending on the used transformation one can detect for instance changes in the mean, scale or dependence of a possibly multivariate time series. Simulations indicate that this approach is very powerful in detecting changes in the marginal variance of ARCH processes and outperforms existing proposals for detecting structural breaks in the dependence structure of heavy tailed multivariate time series.

Robust change-point detection in panel data

In panel data we observe a usually high number N of individuals over a time period T. Even if T is large one often assumes stability of the model over time. We propose a nonparametric and robust test for a change in location and derive its asymptotic distribution under short range dependence and for N, T tending to infinity. Some simulations show its usefulness under heavy tailed distributions.

The spatial sign covariance matrix and its application for robust correlation estimation

We summarize properties of the spatial sign covariance matrix and especially look at the relationship between its eigenvalues and those of the shape matrix of an elliptical distribution. The explicit relationship known in the bivariate case was used to construct the spatial sign correlation coefficient, which is a non-parametric and robust estimator for the correlation coefficient within the elliptical model. We consider a multivariate generalization, which we call the multivariate spatial sign correlation matrix.

On the eigenvalues of the spatial sign covariance matrix in more than two dimensions

We gather several results on the eigenvalues of the spatial sign covariance matrix of an elliptical distribution. It is shown that the eigenvalues are a one-to-one function of the eigenvalues of the shape matrix and that they are closer together than the latter. We further provide a one-dimensional integral representation of the eigenvalues, which facilitates their numerical computation.

Asymptotics of the two-stage spatial sign correlation

The spatial sign correlation (Dürre, Vogel and Fried, 2015) is a highly robust and easy-to-compute, bivariate correlation estimator based on the spatial sign covariance matrix. Since the estimator is inefficient when the marginal scales strongly differ, a two-stage version was proposed. In the first step, the observations are marginally standardized by means of a robust scale estimator, and in the second step, the spatial sign correlation of the thus transformed data set is computed. Dürre et al. (2015) give some evidence that the asymptotic distribution of the two-stage estimator equals that of the spatial sign correlation at equal marginal scales by comparing their influence functions and presenting simulation results, but give no formal proof. In the present paper, we close this gap and establish the asymptotic normality of the two-stage spatial sign correlation and compute its asymptotic variance for elliptical population distributions. We further derive a variance-stabilizing transformation, similar to Fisher's z-transform, and numerically compare the small-sample coverage probabilities of several confidence intervals.

The spatial sign covariance matrix with unknown location

The consistency and asymptotic normality of the spatial sign covariance matrix with unknown location are shown. Simulations illustrate the different asymptotic behavior when using the mean and the spatial median as location estimator.

Spatial Sign Correlation

A new robust correlation estimator based on the spatial sign covariance matrix (SSCM) is proposed. We derive its asymptotic distribution and influence function at elliptical distributions. Finite sample and robustness properties are studied and compared to other robust correlation estimators by means of numerical simulations.
