Muon lifetime and Fermi constant: an update

We present an updated prediction for the lifetime of the muon including a detailed analysis of all relevant uncertainties. Our prediction includes QED corrections up to order $α^3$ and state-of-the-art hadronic contributions based on dispersive methods. Radiative corrections and finite-electron-mass effects are parametrized by the correction factor $Δq$ in $τ_μ^{-1}=G_F^2m_μ^5(1+Δq)/(192π^3)$, for which we obtain $Δq=(-4\, 384\, 678 \pm 34)\times 10^{-9}$. This reduces the uncertainty associated with $Δq$ by an order of magnitude compared to the previous prediction at order $α^2$. We use our results to provide an updated value of the Fermi coupling constant, $G_F=1.166\,378\, 59 \, (59) \times 10^{-5} \, \mathrm{GeV}^{-2}$. Further improvements will require better measurements of the muon lifetime and mass.

Discovering the Axiverse via Fifth Forces

If the Universe is described by string theory or other extensions of the Standard Model, several light, axion-like states are predicted to exist. However, most experiments only search for one of these states. We show that searches for fifth forces can't assume a non-relativistic potential induced by a single axion field. We discuss the strength of the non-relativistic spin-dependent and spin-independent potentials in the most general case of $N_a$ different axions and show how the shape of the potentials can be used to distinguish between different axiverse scenarios.

Leptophilic ALPs in Laboratory Experiments

We study the collider phenomenology of leptophilic axion-like particles (ALPs), i.e. pseudoscalar particles that couple only to charged leptons. Loops of charged leptons induce effective interactions of the ALPs with photons, which depend on the momenta of the interacting particles and differ between pseudoscalar and derivative lepton couplings. We systematically discuss the form of the interaction with photons for general external momenta and identify the regimes when it can be safely approximated by an effective coupling constant. We use these results to derive novel constraints from LEP and calculate state-of-the-art limits from E137 and NA64 for four different scenarios, in which the ALPs couple either to a single lepton generation or universally to all, for both pseudoscalar and derivative lepton couplings. We collect complementary bounds from astrophysics, flavour, and other laboratory experiments to chart the allowed parameter space of leptophilic ALPs in the MeV-GeV mass range.
