A note on the switching adiabatic theorem

We derive a nearly optimal upper bound on the running time in the adiabatic theorem for a switching family of Hamiltonians. We assume the switching Hamiltonian is in the Gevrey class $G^α$ as a function of time, and we show that the error in adiabatic approximation remains small for running times of order $g^{-2}\,|\ln\,g\,|^{6α}$. Here $g$ denotes the minimal spectral gap between the eigenvalue(s) of interest and the rest of the spectrum of the instantaneous Hamiltonian.

On the efficiency of Hamiltonian-based quantum computation for low-rank matrices

We present an extension of Adiabatic Quantum Computing (AQC) algorithm for the unstructured search to the case when the number of marked items is unknown. The algorithm maintains the optimal Grover speedup and includes a small counting subroutine. Our other results include a lower bound on the amount of time needed to perform a general Hamiltonian-based quantum search, a lower bound on the evolution time needed to perform a search that is valid in the presence of control error and a generic upper bound on the minimum eigenvalue gap for evolutions. In particular, we demonstrate that quantum speedup for the unstructured search using AQC type algorithms may only be achieved under very rigid control precision requirements.

Discrete Schrödinger operators with random alloy-type potential

We review recent results on localization for discrete alloy-type models based on the multiscale analysis and the fractional moment method, respectively. The discrete alloy-type model is a family of Schrödinger operators $H_ω= - Δ+ V_ω$ on $\ell^2 (\ZZ^d)$ where $Δ$ is the discrete Laplacian and $V_ω$ the multiplication by the function $V_ω(x) = \sum_{k \in \ZZ^d} ω_k u(x-k)$. Here $ω_k$, $k \in \ZZ^d$, are i.i.d. random variables and $u \in \ell^1 (\ZZ^d ; \RR)$ is a so-called single-site potential. Since $u$ may change sign, certain properties of $H_ω$ depend in a non-monotone way on the random parameters $ω_k$. This requires new methods at certain stages of the localization proof.

Anderson localization for a class of models with a sign-indefinite single-site potential via fractional moment method

A technically convenient signature of Anderson localization is exponential decay of the fractional moments of the Green function within appropriate energy ranges. We consider a random Hamiltonian on a lattice whose randomness is generated by the sign-indefinite single-site potential, which is however sign-definite at the boundary of its support. For this class of Anderson operators we establish a finite-volume criterion which implies that above mentioned the fractional moment decay property holds. This constructive criterion is satisfied at typical perturbative regimes, e. g. at spectral boundaries which satisfy 'Lifshitz tail estimates' on the density of states and for sufficiently strong disorder. We also show how the fractional moment method facilitates the proof of exponential (spectral) localization for such random potentials.

Localization via fractional moments for models on $\mathbb{Z}$ with single-site potentials of finite support

One of the fundamental results in the theory of localization for discrete Schrödinger operators with random potentials is the exponential decay of Green's function and the absence of continuous spectrum. In this paper we provide a new variant of these results for one-dimensional alloy-type potentials with finitely supported sign-changing single-site potentials using the fractional moment method.

Adiabatic quantum computation: Enthusiast and Sceptic's perspectives

Enthusiast's perspective: We analyze the effectiveness of AQC for a small rank problem Hamiltonian $H_F$ with the arbitrary initial Hamiltonian $H_I$. We prove that for the generic $H_I$ the running time cannot be smaller than $O(\sqrt N)$, where $N$ is a dimension of the Hilbert space. We also construct an explicit $H_I$ for which the running time is indeed $O(\sqrt N)$. Our algorithm can be used to solve the unstructured search problem with the unknown number of marked items. Sceptic's perspective: We show that for a robust device, the running time for such $H_F$ cannot be much smaller than $O(N/\ln N)$.

An Adiabatic Theorem for Resonances

We prove a robust extension of the quantum adiabatic theorem. The theorem applies to systems that have resonances instead of bound states, and to systems for which just an approximation to a bound state is known. To demonstrate the theorem's usefulness in a concrete situation, we apply it to shape resonances.

Lifshitz tails in the 3D Anderson model

Consider the 3D Anderson model with a zero mean and bounded i.i.d. random potential. Let $λ$ be the coupling constant measuring the strength of the disorder, and $σ(E)$ the self energy of the model at energy $E$. For any $ε>0$ and sufficiently small $λ$, we derive almost sure localization in the band $E \le -σ(0)-λ^{4-ε}$. In this energy region, we show that the typical correlation length $ξ_E$ behaves roughly as $O((|E|-σ(E))^{-1/2})$, completing the argument outlined in the unpublished work of T. Spencer.

Moment Analysis for Localization in Random Schroedinger Operators

We study localization effects of disorder on the spectral and dynamical properties of Schroedinger operators with random potentials. The new results include exponentially decaying bounds on the transition amplitude and related projection kernels, including in the mean. These are derived through the analysis of fractional moments of the resolvent, which are finite due to the resonance-diffusing effects of the disorder. The main difficulty which has up to now prevented an extension of this method to the continuum can be traced to the lack of a uniform bound on the Lifshitz-Krein spectral shift associated with the local potential terms. The difficulty is avoided here through the use of a weak-L1 estimate concerning the boundary-value distribution of resolvents of maximally dissipative operators, combined with standard tools of relative compactness theory.

Mean Field Dynamics of Boson Stars

We consider a quantum mechanical system of N bosons with relativistic dispersion interacting through a mean field Coulomb potential (attractive or repulsive). We choose the initial wave function to describe a condensate, where the N bosons are all in the same one-particle state. Starting from the N-body Schroedinger equation, we prove that, in the limit N goes to infinity, the time evolution of the one-particle density is governed by the relativistic nonlinear Hartree equation. This equation is used to describe the dynamics of boson stars (Chandrasekhar theory). The corresponding static problem was rigorously solved by Lieb and Yau.

Gross-Pitaevskii Equation as the Mean Field Limit of Weakly Coupled Bosons

We consider the dynamics of $N$ boson systems interacting through a pair potential $N^{-1} V_a(x_i-x_j)$ where $V_a (x) = a^{-3} V (x/a)$. We denote the solution to the $N$-particle Schrödinger equation by $ψ_{N, t}$. Recall that the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation is a nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the GP hierarchy is an infinite BBGKY hierarchy of equations so that if $u_t$ solves the GP equation, then the family of $k$-particle density matrices $\{\otimes_k u_t, k\ge 1 \}$ solves the GP hierarchy. Under the assumption that $a = N^{-\eps}$ for $0 < \eps < 3/5$, we prove that as $N\to \infty$ the limit points of the $k$-particle density matrices of $ψ_{N,t}$ are solutions of the GP hierarchy with the coupling constant in the nonlinear term of the GP equation given by $\int V(x) dx$. The uniqueness of the solutions to this hierarchy remains an open question.

Nonlinear Hartree equation as the mean field limit of weakly coupled fermions

We consider a system of N weakly interacting fermions with a real analytic pair interaction. We prove that for a general class of initial data there exists a fixed time T such that the difference between the one particle density matrix of this system and the solution of the non-linear Hartree equation is of order 1/N for any time t less or equal T.

Fractional Moment Methods for Anderson Localization in the Continuum

The fractional moment method, which was initially developed in the discrete context for the analysis of the localization properties of lattice random operators, is extended to apply to random Schrödinger operators in the continuum. One of the new results for continuum operators are exponentially decaying bounds for the mean value of transition amplitudes, for energies throughout the localization regime. An obstacle which up to now prevented an extension of this method to the continuum is the lack of a uniform bound on the Lifshitz-Krein spectral shift associated with the local potential terms. This difficulty is resolved through an analysis of the resonance-diffusing effects of the disorder.

Adiabatic Charge Transport and the Kubo Formula for Landau Type Hamiltonians

The adiabatic charge transport is investigated in a two dimensional Landau model perturbed by a bounded potential at zero temperature. We show that if the Fermi level lies in a spectral gap then in the adiabatic limit the accumulated excess Hall transport is given by the linear response Kubo-Streda formula. The proof relies on the expansion of Nenciu, some generalized phase space estimates, and a bound on the speed of propagation.

A strong operator topology adiabatic theorem

We prove an adiabatic theorem for the evolution of spectral data under a weak additive perturbation in the context of a system without an intrinsic time scale. For continuous functions of the unperturbed Hamiltonian the convergence is in norm while for a larger class functions, including the spectral projections associated to embedded eigenvalues, the convergence is in the strong operator topology.
