The Hirzebruch--Riemann--Roch theorem in true genus-0 quantum K-theory

We completely characterize genus-0 K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of a compact complex algebraic manifold in terms of cohomological Gromov-Witten invariants of this manifold. This is done by applying (a virtual version of) the Kawasaki-Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch formula for expressing holomorphic Euler characteristics of orbibundles on moduli spaces of genus-0 stable maps, analyzing the sophisticated combinatorial structure of inertia stacks of such moduli spaces, and employing various quantum Riemann--Roch formulas from "fake" (i.e. orbifold-ignorant) quantum K-theory of manifold and orbifolds (formulas, either previously known from works of Coates-Givental, Tseng, and Coates-Corti-Iritani-Tseng, or newly developed for this purpose in separate papers by Tonita). The ultimate formulation combines properties of overruled Lagrangian cones in symplectic loop spaces (the language, that has become traditional in description of generating functions of genus-0 Gromov-Witten theory) with a novel framework of "adelic characterization" of such cones. As an application, we prove that tangent spaces of the overruled Lagrangian cones of quantum K-theory carry a natural structure of modules over the algebra of finite-difference operators in Novikov's variables. As another application, we compute one of such tangent spaces for each of the complete intersections given by equations of degrees $l_1,...,l_k$ in a complex projective space of dimension $\geq l_1^2+...+l_k^2-1$.

A_{n-1} singularities and nKdV hierarchies

According to a conjecture of E. Witten proved by M. Kontsevich, a certain generating function for intersection indices on the Deligne -- Mumford moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces coincides with a certain tau-function of the KdV hierarchy. The generating function is naturally generalized under the name the {\em total descendent potential} in the theory of Gromov -- Witten invariants of symplectic manifolds. The papers arXiv: math.AG/0108100 and arXive: math.DG/0108160 contain two equivalent constructions, motivated by some results in Gromov -- Witten theory, which associate a total descendent potential to any semisimple Frobenius structure. In this paper, we prove that in the case of K.Saito's Frobenius structure on the miniversal deformation of the $A_{n-1}$-singularity, the total descendent potential is a tau-function of the $n$KdV hierarchy. We derive this result from a more general construction for solutions of the $n$KdV hierarchy from $n-1$ solutions of the KdV hierarchy.

Symplectic geometry of Frobenius structures

The purpose of the notes is to reiterate and expand the viewpoint, outlined in the paper math.AG/0110142 of T. Coates and the author, which recasts the concept of Frobenius manifold in terms of linear symplectic geometry and exposes the role of the twisted loop group L^{(2)}GL_N of hidden symmetries. New applications include a several line proof of the genus 0 Virasoro constraints and the quantum Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorem in the theory of cobordism-valued Gromov-Witten invariants.

Quantum Riemann - Roch, Lefschetz and Serre

Given a holomorphic vector bundle $E:EX X$ over a compact Kähler manifold, one introduces twisted GW-invariants of $X$ replacing virtual fundamental cycles of moduli spaces of stable maps $f: Σ\to X$ by their cap-product with a chosen multiplicative characteristic class of $H^0(Σ, f^* E) - H^1(Σ, f^*E)$. Using the formalism of quantized quadratic hamiltonians, we express the descendent potential for the twisted theory in terms of that for $X$. The result (Theorem 1) is a consequence of Mumford's Riemann -- Roch -- Grothendieck formula applied to the universal stable map. When $E$ is concave, and the inverse $\CC^{\times}$-equivariant Euler class is chosen, the twisted theory yields GW-invariants of $EX$. The ``non-linear Serre duality principle'' expresses GW-invariants of $EX$ via those of the supermanifold $ΠE^*X$, where the Euler class and $E^*$ replace the inverse Euler class and $E$. We derive from Theorem 1 the nonlinear Serre duality in a very general form (Corollary 2). When the bundle $E$ is convex, and a submanifold $Y\subset X$ is defined by a global section, the genus 0 GW-invariants of $ΠE X$ coincide with those of $Y$. We prove a ``quantum Lefschetz hyperplane section principle'' (Theorem 2) expressing genus 0 GW-invariants of a complete intersection $Y$ via those of $X$. This extends earlier results of Y.-P. Lee and A. Gathmann and yields most of the known mirror formulas for toric complete intersections.

Semisimple Frobenius structures at higher genus

We describe genus g>1 potentials of semisimple Frobenius structures. Our formula can be considered as a definition in the axiomatic context of Frobenius manifolds. In Gromov-Witten theory, it becomes a conjecture expressing higher genus GW-invariants in terms of genus 0 GW-invariants of symplectic manifolds with generically semisimple quantum cup-product. The conjecture is supported by the corresponding theorem about equivariant GW-invariants of tori actions with isolated fixed points. The parallel theory of gravitational descendents is also presented.

Quantum K-theory on flag manifolds, finite-difference Toda lattices and quantum groups

We conjecture that appropriate K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of complex flag manifolds G/B are governed by finite-difference versions of Toda systems constructed in terms of the Langlands-dual quantized universal enveloping algebras U_q(g'). The conjecture is proved in the case of classical flag manifolds of the series A. The proof is based on a refinement of the famous Atiyah-Hirzebruch argument for rigidity of arithmetical genus applied to hyperquot-scheme compactifications of spaces of rational curves in the flag manifolds.

Introduction to Symplectic Field Theory

We sketch in this article a new theory, which we call Symplectic Field Theory or SFT, which provides an approach to Gromov-Witten invariants of symplectic manifolds and their Lagrangian submanifolds in the spirit of topological field theory, and at the same time serves as a rich source of new invariants of contact manifolds and their Legendrian submanifolds. Moreover, we hope that the applications of SFT go far beyond this framework.

A mirror theorem for toric complete intersections

We prove a generalized mirror conjecture for non-negative complete intersections in symplectic toric manifolds. Namely, we express solutions of the PDE system describing quantum cohomology of such a manifold in terms of suitable hypergeometric functions. Revision 03.03.97: we correct an error in Introduction.

Quantum cohomology of flag manifolds and Toda lattices

We discuss relations of Vafa's quantum cohomology with Floer's homology theory, introduce equivariant quantum cohomology, formulate some conjectures about its general properties and, on the basis of these conjectures, compute quantum cohomology algebras of the flag manifolds. The answer turns out to coincide with the algebra of regular functions on an invariant lagrangian variety of a Toda lattice.
