Checkerboard incircular nets. Laguerre geometry and parametrisation

We present a procedure which allows one to integrate explicitly the class of checkerboard IC-nets which has recently been introduced as a generalisation of incircular (IC) nets. The latter class of privileged congruences of lines in the plane is known to admit a great variety of geometric properties which are also present in the case of checkerboard IC-nets. The parametrisation obtained in this manner is reminiscent of that associated with elliptic billiards. Connections with discrete confocal coordinate systems and the fundamental QRT maps of integrable systems theory are made. The formalism developed in this paper is based on the existence of underlying pencils of conics and quadrics which is exploited in a Laguerre geometric setting.

Multi-Nets. Classification of discrete and smooth surfaces with characteristic properties on arbitrary parameter rectangles

We investigate the common underlying discrete structures for various smooth and discrete nets. The main idea is to impose the characteristic properties of the nets not only on elementary quadrilaterals but also on larger parameter rectangles. For discrete planar quadrilateral nets, circular nets, $Q^*$-nets and conical nets we obtain a characterization of the corresponding discrete multi-nets. In the limit these discrete nets lead to some classical classes of smooth surfaces. Furthermore, we propose to use the characterized discrete nets as discrete extensions for the nets to obtain structure preserving subdivision schemes.

Incircular nets and confocal conics

We consider congruences of straight lines in a plane with the combinatorics of the square grid, with all elementary quadrilaterals possessing an incircle. It is shown that all the vertices of such nets (we call them incircular or IC-nets) lie on confocal conics. Our main new results are on checkerboard IC-nets in the plane. These are congruences of straight lines in the plane with the combinatorics of the square grid, combinatorially colored as a checkerboard, such that all black coordinate quadrilaterals possess inscribed circles. We show how this larger class of IC-nets appears quite naturally in Laguerre geometry of oriented planes and spheres, and leads to new remarkable incidence theorems. Most of our results are valid in hyperbolic and spherical geometries as well. We present also generalizations in spaces of higher dimension, called checkerboard IS-nets. The construction of these nets is based on a new 9 inspheres incidence theorem.

On a discretization of confocal quadrics. II. A geometric approach to general parametrizations

We propose a discretization of classical confocal coordinates. It is based on a novel characterization thereof as factorizable orthogonal coordinate systems. Our geometric discretization leads to factorizable discrete nets with a novel discrete analog of the orthogonality property. A discrete confocal coordinate system may be constructed geometrically via polarity with respect to a sequence of classical confocal quadrics. Various sequences correspond to various discrete parametrizations. The coordinate functions of discrete confocal quadrics are computed explicitly. The theory is illustrated with a variety of examples in two and three dimensions. These include confocal coordinate systems parametrized in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions. Connections with incircular (IC) nets and a generalized Euler-Poisson-Darboux system are established.

Discrete CMC surfaces in R^3 and discrete minimal surfaces in S^3. A discrete Lawson correspondence

The main result of this paper is a discrete Lawson correspondence between discrete CMC surfaces in R^3 and discrete minimal surfaces in S^3. This is a correspondence between two discrete isothermic surfaces. We show that this correspondence is an isometry in the following sense: it preserves the metric coefficients introduced previously by Bobenko and Suris for isothermic nets. Exactly as in the smooth case, this is a correspondence between nets with the same Lax matrices, and the immersion formulas also coincide with the smooth case.

Abelian Higgs Vortices and Discrete Conformal Maps

We establish a connection between recent developments in the study of vortices in the abelian Higgs models, and in the theory of structure-preserving discrete conformal maps. We explain how both are related via conformal mapping problems involving prescribed linear combinations of the curvature and volume form, and show how the discrete conformal theory can be used to construct discrete vortex solutions.

Discrete Riemann surfaces based on quadrilateral cellular decompositions

Our aim in this paper is to provide a theory of discrete Riemann surfaces based on quadrilateral cellular decompositions of Riemann surfaces together with their complex structure encoded by complex weights. Previous work, in particular of Mercat, mainly focused on real weights corresponding to quadrilateral cells having orthogonal diagonals. We discuss discrete coverings, discrete exterior calculus, and discrete Abelian integrals. Our presentation includes several new notions and results such as branched coverings of discrete Riemann surfaces, the discrete Riemann-Hurwitz Formula, double poles of discrete one-forms and double values of discrete meromorphic functions that enter the discrete Riemann-Roch Theorem, and a discrete Abel-Jacobi map.

On a discretization of confocal quadrics. I. An integrable systems approach

Confocal quadrics lie at the heart of the system of confocal coordinates (also called elliptic coordinates, after Jacobi). We suggest a discretization which respects two crucial properties of confocal coordinates: separability and all two-dimensional coordinate subnets being isothermic surfaces (that is, allowing a conformal parametrization along curvature lines, or, equivalently, supporting orthogonal Koenigs nets). Our construction is based on an integrable discretization of the Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation and leads to discrete nets with the separability property, with all two-dimensional subnets being Koenigs nets, and with an additional novel discrete analog of the orthogonality property. The coordinate functions of our discrete nets are given explicitly in terms of gamma functions.

DGD Gallery: Storage, sharing, and publication of digital research data

We describe a project, called the "Discretization in Geometry and Dynamics Gallery", or DGD Gallery for short, whose goal is to store geometric data and to make it publicly available. The DGD Gallery offers an online web service for the storage, sharing, and publication of digital research data.

Circle complexes and the discrete CKP equation

In the spirit of Klein's Erlangen Program, we investigate the geometric and algebraic structure of fundamental line complexes and the underlying privileged discrete integrable system for the minors of a matrix which constitute associated Plücker coordinates. Particular emphasis is put on the restriction to Lie circle geometry which is intimately related to the master dCKP equation of discrete integrable systems theory. The geometric interpretation, construction and integrability of fundamental line complexes in Möbius, Laguerre and hyperbolic geometry are discussed in detail. In the process, we encounter various avatars of classical and novel incidence theorems and associated cross- and multi-ratio identities for particular hypercomplex numbers. This leads to a discrete integrable equation which, in the context of Möbius geometry, governs novel doubly hexagonal circle patterns.

On a new conformal functional for simplicial surfaces

We introduce a smooth quadratic conformal functional and its weighted version $$W_2=\sum_e β^2(e)\quad W_{2,w}=\sum_e (n_i+n_j)β^2(e),$$ where $β(e)$ is the extrinsic intersection angle of the circumcircles of the triangles of the mesh sharing the edge $e=(ij)$ and $n_i$ is the valence of vertex $i$. Besides minimizing the squared local conformal discrete Willmore energy $W$ this functional also minimizes local differences of the angles $β$. We investigate the minimizers of this functionals for simplicial spheres and simplicial surfaces of nontrivial topology. Several remarkable facts are observed. In particular for most of randomly generated simplicial polyhedra the minimizers of $W_2$ and $W_{2,w}$ are inscribed polyhedra. We demonstrate also some applications in geometry processing, for example, a conformal deformation of surfaces to the round sphere. A partial theoretical explanation through quadratic optimization theory of some observed phenomena is presented.

Discrete complex analysis on planar quad-graphs

We develop a linear theory of discrete complex analysis on general quad-graphs, continuing and extending previous work of Duffin, Mercat, Kenyon, Chelkak and Smirnov on discrete complex analysis on rhombic quad-graphs. Our approach based on the medial graph yields more instructive proofs of discrete analogs of several classical theorems and even new results. We provide discrete counterparts of fundamental concepts in complex analysis such as holomorphic functions, derivatives, the Laplacian, and exterior calculus. Also, we discuss discrete versions of important basic theorems such as Green's identities and Cauchy's integral formulae. For the first time, we discretize Green's first identity and Cauchy's integral formula for the derivative of a holomorphic function. In this paper, we focus on planar quad-graphs, but we would like to mention that many notions and theorems can be adapted to discrete Riemann surfaces in a straightforward way. In the case of planar parallelogram-graphs with bounded interior angles and bounded ratio of side lengths, we construct a discrete Green's function and discrete Cauchy's kernels with asymptotics comparable to the smooth case. Further restricting to the integer lattice of a two-dimensional skew coordinate system yields appropriate discrete Cauchy's integral formulae for higher order derivatives.

On discrete integrable equations with convex variational principles

We investigate the variational structure of discrete Laplace-type equations that are motivated by discrete integrable quad-equations. In particular, we explain why the reality conditions we consider should be all that are reasonable, and we derive sufficient conditions (that are often necessary) on the labeling of the edges under which the corresponding generalized discrete action functional is convex. Convexity is an essential tool to discuss existence and uniqueness of solutions to Dirichlet boundary value problems. Furthermore, we study which combinatorial data allow convex action functionals of discrete Laplace-type equations that are actually induced by discrete integrable quad-equations, and we present how the equations and functionals corresponding to (Q3) are related to circle patterns.

Discrete line complexes and integrable evolution of minors

Based on the classical Plücker correspondence, we present algebraic and geometric properties of discrete integrable line complexes in $CP^3$. Algebraically, these are encoded in a discrete integrable system which appears in various guises in the theory of continuous and discrete integrable systems. Geometrically, the existence of these integrable line complexes is shown to be guaranteed by Desargues' classical theorem of projective geometry. A remarkable characterisation in terms of correlations of $CP^3$ is also recorded.

Supercyclidic nets

Supercyclides are surfaces with a characteristic conjugate parametrization consisting of two families of conics. Patches of supercyclides can be adapted to a Q-net (a discrete quadrilateral net with planar faces) such that neighboring surface patches share tangent planes along common boundary curves. We call the resulting patchworks 'supercyclidic nets' and show that every Q-net in $\mathbb{R}P^3$ can be extended to a supercyclidic net. The construction is governed by a multidimensionally consistent 3D system. One essential aspect of the theory is the extension of a given Q-net in $\mathbb{R}P^N$ to a system of circumscribed discrete torsal line systems. We present a description of the latter in terms of projective reflections that generalizes the systems of orthogonal reflections which govern the extension of circular nets to cyclidic nets by means of Dupin cyclide patches.

Curvature line parametrized surfaces and orthogonal coordinate systems. Discretization with Dupin cyclides

Cyclidic nets are introduced as discrete analogs of curvature line parametrized surfaces and orthogonal coordinate systems. A 2-dimensional cyclidic net is a piecewise smooth $C^1$-surface built from surface patches of Dupin cyclides, each patch being bounded by curvature lines of the supporting cyclide. An explicit description of cyclidic nets is given and their relation to the established discretizations of curvature line parametrized surfaces as circular, conical and principal contact element nets is explained. We introduce 3-dimensional cyclidic nets as discrete analogs of triply-orthogonal coordinate systems and investigate them in detail. Our considerations are based on the Lie geometric description of Dupin cyclides. Explicit formulas are derived and implemented in a computer program.

Classification of integrable discrete equations of octahedron type

We use the consistency approach to classify discrete integrable 3D equations of the octahedron type. They are naturally treated on the root lattice $Q(A_3)$ and are consistent on the multidimensional lattice $Q(A_N)$. Our list includes the most prominent representatives of this class, the discrete KP equation and its Schwarzian (multi-ratio) version, as well as three further equations. The combinatorics and geometry of the octahedron type equations are explained. In particular, the consistency on the 4-dimensional Delaunay cells has its origin in the classical Desargues theorem of projective geometry. The main technical tool used for the classification is the so called tripodal form of the octahedron type equations.
