Robust two-dimensional surface superconductivity and vortex lattice in the Weyl semimetal $γ$-PtBi$_2$

The layered compound $γ$-PtBi$_2$ is a topological semimetal with Fermi arcs at the surface joining bulk Weyl points. Recent work has found signatures of surface superconductivity consisting of gap openings compatible with a critical temperature orders of magnitude larger than the bulk value. However, no superconducting vortices have been identified, raising questions about the robustness of the phase coherence. Here we use very low temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and find robust superconductivity with T$_C=$2.9 K and H$_{C2}\approx$1.8 T linked to the Fermi arcs. We observe quantized superconducting vortices and the Josephson effect, demonstrating two-dimensional macroscopic quantum phase coherence.

Spin-resolved Josephson diode effect through strongly spin-polarized conical magnets

We present a theoretical study of the spin-resolved Josephson diode effect in junctions comprising strongly spin-polarized conical magnets (FM) coupled to singlet superconductors (SC). The system is treated by making use of the Gor$^\prime$kov and quasiclassical Green$^\prime$s function methods. Modeling the SC/FM interfaces as spin-dependent $δ$-potentials, we apply our model to an SC/FM/SC junction and account for the Josephson current-phase relation (CPR). The nontrivial coupling between the spin bands in the conical magnet gives rise to a strong Josephson diode effect with an efficiency greater than 40%. The effect essentially depends on the quantum spin-geometric phase that enters the Josephson CPR in a very similar manner to the superconducting phase difference. The former is generated non-locally by the intrinsically noncoplanar spin arrangement of the conical magnet, which breaks the time-reversal and inversion symmetries. Strong spin polarization and a helical pitch of the conical magnet comparable to the superconducting coherence length are essential for the effect. We perform a harmonic analysis of the Josephson CPR and interpret the effect in terms of coherent transfer of multiple equal-spin triplet Cooper pairs across the conical magnet.

Superconducting density of states of PtPb4

PtPb$_4$ is a type II superconductor with a bulk critical temperature $T_{c}\approx 3 $K and an upper critical field of $H_{c2}=0.36 $T. PtPb$_4$ is related to non-superconducting PtSn$_4$, which presents nodal arc states at the surface. Here we measure the superconducting density of states of PtPb$_4$ using millikelvin Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM). We observe a fully opened superconducting gap of $Δ=0.48$\ meV similar to expectations from Bardeen Cooper and Schrieffer (BCS) theory ($Δ_0=1.76k_BT_{c}=0.49 $meV). Measurements under magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the surface show a spatially inhomogeneous gap structure, presenting superconducting signatures at fields as high as 1.5 T, significantly above $H_{c2}=0.36 $T. On some locations we find that the superconducting density of states does not vanish above $T_{c}$. We can find signatures of a superconducting gap up to 5K. We discuss possible reasons for the observation of superconducting properties above $T_{c}$ and $H_{c2}$, emphasizing the role played by structural defects.

Interference phenomena in Josephson junctions with ferromagnetic bilayers: Spin-triplet correlations and resonances

We study the Josephson effect in planar $SF_1F_2S$ junctions that consist of conventional $s$-wave superconductors ($S$) connected by two metallic monodomain ferromagnets ($F_1$ and $F_2$) with arbitrary transparency of interfaces. We solve the scattering problem in the clean limit based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation for both spin-singlet and odd in frequency spin-triplet pairing correlations. We calculate numerically the Josephson current-phase relation $I(ϕ)$. While the first harmonic of $I(ϕ)$ is completely generated by spin-singlet and short-range spin-triplet superconducting correlations, for noncollinear magnetizations of ferromagnetic layers the second harmonic has an additional long-range spin-triplet component. Therefore, for strong ferromagnetic influence, the long-range spin-triplet contribution to the second harmonic dominates. We find an exception due to the geometric resonance for equal ferromagnetic layers when the first harmonic is strongly enhanced. Both first and second harmonic amplitudes oscillate with ferromagnetic layer thicknesses due to $0-π$ transitions. We study the influence of interface transparencies and find additional resonances for finite transparency of interface between ferromagnetic layers.

Attractive interaction between superconducting vortices in tilted magnetic fields

Many practical applications of high T$_c$ superconductors involve layered materials and magnetic fields applied on an arbitrary direction with respect to the layers. When the anisotropy is very large, Cooper pair currents can circulate either within or perpendicular to the layers. Thus, tilted magnetic fields lead to intertwined lattices of Josephson and Abrikosov vortices, with quantized circulation across and within layers, respectively. Transport in such intertwined lattices has been studied in detail, but direct observation and manipulation of vortices remains challenging. Here we present magnetic force microscopy experiments in tilted magnetic fields in the extremely quasi-two dimensional superconductor $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8}$. We trigger Abrikosov vortex motion in between Josephson vortices, and find that Josephson vortices in different layers can be brought on top of each other. Our measurements suggest that intertwined lattices in tilted magnetic fields can be intrinsically easy to manipulate thanks to the mutual interaction between Abrikosov and Josephson vortices.
