Hybridized quadrupolar excitations in the spin-anisotropic frustrated magnet FeI2

Magnetic order is usually associated with well-defined magnon excitations. Exotic magnetic fluctuations with fractional, topological or multipolar character, have been proposed for radically different forms of magnetic matter such as spin-liquids. As a result, considerable efforts have searched for, and uncovered, low-spin materials with suppressed dipolar order at low temperatures. Here, we report neutron-scattering experiments and quantitative theoretical modeling of an exceptional spin-1 system -- the uniaxial triangular magnet FeI2 -- where a bright and dispersive band of mixed dipolar-quadrupolar fluctuations emerges just above a dipolar ordered ground-state. This excitation arises from anisotropic exchange interactions that hybridize overlapping modes carrying fundamentally different quantum numbers. Remarkably, a generalization of spin-wave theory to local SU(3) degrees of freedom accounts for all details of the low-energy dynamical response of FeI2 without going beyond quadratic order. Our work highlights that quantum excitations without classical counterparts can be realized even in presence of fully developed magnetic order.

Study of anharmonicity in Zirconium Hydrides using inelastic neutron scattering and ab-initio computer modeling

The anharmonic phenomena in Zirconium Hydrides and Deuterides, including ε-ZrH2, γ-ZrH, and γ-ZrD, have been investigated from aspects of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and lattice dynamics calculations within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). The observed multiple sharp peaks below harmonic multi-phonon bands in the experimental spectra of all three materials did not show up in the simulated INS spectra based on the harmonic approximation, indicating the existence of strong anharmonicity in those materials and the necessity of further explanations. We present a detailed study on the anharmonicity of zirconium hydrides/deuterides by exploring the 2D potential energy surface of hydrogen/deuterium atoms, and solving the corresponding 2D single-particle Schrodinger equation to get the eigenfrequencies. The obtained results well describe the experimental INS spectra and show harmonic behavior in the fundamental modes and strong anharmonicity at higher energies.

Topological spin excitations in honeycomb ferromagnet CrI$_3$

In two dimensional honeycomb ferromagnets, bosonic magnon quasiparticles (spin waves) may either behave as massless Dirac fermions or form topologically protected edge states. The key ingredient defining their nature is the next-nearest neighbor Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction that breaks the inversion symmetry of the lattice and discriminates chirality of the associated spin-wave excitations. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we find that spin waves of the insulating honeycomb ferromagnet CrI$_3$ ($T_C=61$ K) have two distinctive bands of ferromagnetic excitations separated by a $\sim$4 meV gap at the Dirac points. These results can only be understood by considering a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with DM interaction, thus providing experimental evidence that spin waves in CrI$_3$ can have robust topological properties useful for dissipationless spintronic applications.

The dual nature of magnetism in a uranium heavy fermion system

The duality between localized and itinerant nature of magnetism in $5\textit{f}$ electron systems has been a longstanding puzzle. Here, we report inelastic neutron scattering measurements, which reveal both local and itinerant aspects of magnetism in a single crystalline system of UPt$_{2}$Si$_{2}$. In the antiferromagnetic state, we observe broad continuum of diffuse magnetic scattering with a resonance-like gap of $\approx$ 7 meV, and surprising absence of coherent spin-waves, suggestive of itinerant magnetism. While the gap closes above the Neel temperature, strong dynamic spin correlations persist to high temperature. Nevertheless, the size and temperature dependence of the total magnetic spectral weight can be well described by local moment with $J=4$. Furthermore, polarized neutron measurements reveal that the magnetic fluctuations are mostly transverse, with little or none of the longitudinal component expected for itinerant moments. These results suggest that a dual description of local and itinerant magnetism is required to understand UPt$_{2}$Si$_{2}$, and by extension, other 5$f$ systems in general.

The Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer at the Spallation Neutron Source - A Review of the first 8 Years of Operation

The first eight years of operation of the Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer (CNCS) at the Spallation Neutron Source in Oak Ridge is being reviewed. The instrument has been part of the facility user program since 2009, and more than 250 individual user experiments have been performed to date. CNCS is an extremely powerful and versatile instrument and offers leading edge performance in terms of beam intensity, energy resolution, and flexibility to trade one for another. Experiments are being routinely performed with the sample at extreme conditions: T~0.05K, p>=2GPa and B=8T can be achieved individually or in combination. In particular, CNCS is in a position to advance the state of the art with inelastic neutron scattering under pressure, and some of the recent accomplishments in this area will be presented in more detail.
