Ultrafast transport of laser-excited spin polarized carriers in Au/Fe/MgO(001)

A time domain approach to probe hot carrier-induced spin dynamics is demonstrated. The experiments are performed in epitaxial Au/Fe/MgO(001), where spin-polarized hot carriers are excited in the Fe layer by 35 fs laser pulses. They propagate to the Au surface where the transient spin polarization is detected by magneto-induced second harmonic generation. Different energies of majority and minority hot carriers excited in the exchange-split Fe band structure lead to their spindependent lifetimes in Au. Accordingly, two spin-polarized current contributions which propagate superdiffusively at different velocities result in a spin current pulse of about 100 fs duration.

Orbital magnetic moment and extrinsic spin Hall effect for iron impurity in gold

We report electronic structure calculations of an iron impurity in gold host. The spin, orbital and dipole magnetic moments were investigated using the LDA+$U$ correlated band theory. We show that the {\em around-mean-field}-LDA+$U$ reproduces the XMCD experimental data well and does not lead to formation of a large orbital moment on the Fe atom. Furthermore, exact diagonalization of the multi-orbital Anderson impurity model with the full Coulomb interaction matrix and the spin-orbit coupling is performed in order to estimate the spin Hall angle. The obtained value $γ_S \approx 0.025$ suggests that there is no giant extrinsic spin Hall effect due to scattering on iron impurities in gold.

Electronic structure and spectral properties of Am, Cm and Bk: Charge density self-consistent LDA+HIA calculations in FP-LAPW basis

We provide a straightforward and numerically efficient procedure to perform local density approximation + Hubbard I (LDA+HIA) calculations, including self-consistency over the charge density, within the full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method. This implementation is all-electron, includes spin-orbit interaction, and makes no shape approximations for the charge density. The method is applied to calculate selected heavy actinides in the paramagnetic phase. The electronic structure and spectral properties of Am and Cm metals obtained are in agreement with previous dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) calculations and with available experimental data. We point out that the charge density self-consistent LDA+HIA calculations predict the $f$ charge on Bk to exceed the atomic integer $f^8$ value by 0.22.

Measuring spin and charge correlations via tunneling-current conductance fluctuations

Scanning tunneling miscoscopy is one of the most powerful spectroscopic tools for single-electron excitations. We show that the conductance fluctuations, or noise in the conductance, of a tunneling current into an interacting electron system is dominated by density-density and spin-spin correlations. This allows one to probe two-particle properties (susceptibilities) and collective excitations by standard experimental tunneling methods. We demonstrate this theoretically, using a novel many-body calculation for the multi-center Kondo problem, including both direct and indirect exchange between magnetic atoms. An example of the two-particle correlations around a single magnetic adatom in the Kondo regime, as would be viewed by a scanning tunneling microscope, is given. The spatial dependance of the charge and spin correlations, including the formation of the Kondo cloud in the spin sector, are shown.

First-principles studies of water adsorption on graphene: The role of the substrate

We investigate the electronic properties of graphene upon water adsorption and study the influence of the SiO2 substrate in this context using density functional calculations. Perfect suspended graphene is rather insensitive to H2O adsorbates, as doping requires highly oriented H2O clusters. For graphene on a defective SiO2 substrate, we find a strongly different behavior: H2O adsorbates can shift the substrate's impurity bands and change their hybridization with the graphene bands. In this way, H2O can lead to doping of graphene for much lower adsorbate concentrations than for free hanged graphene. The effect depends strongly on the microscopic substrate properties.

Superperturbation solver for quantum impurity models

We present a very efficient solver for the general Anderson impurity problem. It is based on the perturbation around a solution obtained from exact diagonalization using a small number of bath sites. We formulate a perturbation theory which is valid for both weak and strong coupling and interpolates between these limits. Good agreement with numerically exact quantum Monte-Carlo results is found for a single bath site over a wide range of parameters. In particular, the Kondo resonance in the intermediate coupling regime is well reproduced for a single bath site and the lowest order correction. The method is particularly suited for low temperatures and alleviates analytical continuation of imaginary time data due to the absence of statistical noise compared to quantum Monte-Carlo impurity solvers.

Orbital moment of a single Co atom on a Pt(111) surface - a view from correlated band theory

The orbital magnetic moment of a Co adatom on a Pt(111) surface is calculated in good agreement with experimental data making use of the LSDA+U method. It is shown that both electron correlation induced orbital polarization and structural relaxation play essential roles in orbital moment formation. The microscopic origins of the orbital moment enhancement are discussed.

Spectral and transport properties of doped Mott-Hubbard systems with incommensurate magnetic order

We present spectral and optical properties of the Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice using a generalization of dynamical mean-field theory to magnetic states in finite dimension. The self-energy includes the effect of spin fluctuations and screening of the Coulomb interaction due to particle-particle scattering. At half-filling the quasiparticles reduce the width of the Mott-Hubbard `gap' and have dispersions and spectral weights that agree remarkably well with quantum Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization calculations. Away from half-filling we consider incommensurate magnetic order with a varying local spin direction, and derive the photoemission and optical spectra. The incommensurate magnetic order leads to a pseudogap which opens at the Fermi energy and coexists with a large Mott-Hubbard gap. The quasiparticle states survive in the doped systems, but their dispersion is modified with the doping and a rigid band picture does not apply. Spectral weight in the optical conductivity is transferred to lower energies and the Drude weight increases linearly with increasing doping. We show that incommensurate magnetic order leads also to mid-gap states in the optical spectra and to decreased scattering rates in the transport processes, in qualitative agreement with the experimental observations in doped systems. The gradual disappearence of the spiral magnetic order and the vanishing pseudogap with increasing temperature is found to be responsible for the linear resistivity. We discuss the possible reasons why these results may only partially explain the features observed in the optical spectra of high temperature superconductors.
