Tensor electric polarizability of the deuteron in storage-ring experiments

The tensor electric polarizability of the deuteron gives important information about spin-dependent nuclear forces. If a resonant horizontal electric field acts on a deuteron beam circulating into a storage ring, the tensor electric polarizability stimulates the buildup of the vertical polarization of the deuteron (the Baryshevsky effect). General formulas describing this effect have been derived. Calculated formulas agree with the earlier obtained results. The problem of the influence of tensor electric polarizability on spin dynamics in such a deuteron electric-dipole-moment experiment in storage rings has been investigated. Doubling the resonant frequency used in this experiment dramatically amplifies the Baryshevsky effect and provides the opportunity to make high-precision measurements of the deuteron's tensor electric polarizability.

Equation of spin motion in storage rings in a cylindrical coordinate system

The exact equation of spin motion in a cylindrical coordinate system with allowance for electric dipole moments of particles has been derived. This equation is convenient for analytical calculations of spin dynamics in circular storage rings when the configuration of main fields is simple enough. The generalized formula for the influence of a vertical betatron oscillation on the angular velocity of spin rotation has been found. This formula agrees with the previously obtained result and contains an additional oscillatory term that can be used for fitting. The relative importance of terms in the equation of spin motion is discussed.

Analysis of wave equations for spin-1 particles interacting with an electromagnetic field

The Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for relativistic spin-1 particles interacting with nonuniform electric and uniform magnetic fields is performed. The Hamilton operator in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation is determined. It agrees with the Lagrangian obtained by Pomeransky, Khriplovich, and Sen'kov. The classical and quantum formulae for the Hamiltonian agree. The validity of the Corben-Schwinger equations is confirmed. However, it is difficult to generalize these equations in order to take into account the quadrupole moment defined by a particle charge distribution. The known second-order wave equations are not quite satisfactory because they contain non-Hermitian terms. The Hermitian second-order wave equation is derived.

Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for relativistic particles in external fields

A method of Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for relativistic spin-1/2 particles in external fields is proposed. It permits determination of the Hamilton operator in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation with any accuracy. Interactions between a particle having an anomalous magnetic moment and nonstationary electromagnetic and electroweak fields are investigated.

Verification of Relativistic Wave Equations for Spin-1 Particles

The Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for relativistic spin-1 particles interacting with nonuniform electric and uniform magnetic fields is performed. The Hamilton operator in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation is determined. It agrees with the Lagrangian obtained by Pomeransky, Khriplovich, and Sen'kov. The validity of the Corben-Schwinger equations is confirmed. However, an attempt to generalize these equations in order to take into account the own quadrupole moment of particles was not successful. The known second-order wave equations are incorrect because they contain non-Hermitian terms. The correct second-order wave equation is derived.
