Generation, amplification, frequency conversion and reversal of propagation of THz photons in nonlinear hyperbolic metamaterial

The metamaterial is proposed which supports a mixture of three or more normal and backward electromagnetic modes with equal co-directed phase velocities and mutually contra-directed energy fluxes. This enables extraordinary three-wave mixing, greatly enhanced optical parametric amplification and frequency-changing generation of entangled photons in the reflection direction. Proof-of-principle numerical simulation of such processes is presented based on the particular example of the wave-guided THz waves contra-propagating in the metamaterial made of carbon nanotubes.

Tree-wave mixing of ordinary and backward electromagnetic waves: extraordinary transients

Three-wave mixing of ordinary and backward electromagnetic waves in pulsed regime is investigated in the metamaterials, which enable co-existence and phase matching of such waves. It is shown that opposite direction of phase velocity and energy flux in backward waves gives rise to extraordinary transient processes in greatly enhanced optical parametric amplification and in frequency up or down shifting nonlinear reflectivity. The discovered transients resemble slowed response of an oscillator on pulsed excitation in the vicinity of its resonance

Nonlinear-optical frequency-doubling meta-reflector: pulsed regime

The properties of backward-wave second harmonic meta-reflector operating in pulse regime are investigated. We show that ratio of the income pulse length to the thickness of the metaslab determines its important operational properties which are in contrast with those manifested at common second harmonic generation settings.

Second harmonic generation and pulse shaping in positively and negatively spatially dispersive nanowaveguides: comparative analysis

Comparative analysis of second harmonic generation in ordinary and backward-wave settings is presented. Extraordinary properties of frequency doubling nonlinear optical reflectivity and pulse shaping through phase matching of ordinary and backward electromagnetic waves in the nanowaveguides with mixed negative/positive spatial dispersion is demonstrated with numerical simulations.

Unidirectional Amplification and Shaping of Optical Pulses by Three-Wave Mixing with Negative Phonons

A possibility to greatly enhance frequency-conversion efficiency of stimulated Raman scattering is shown by making use of extraordinary properties of three-wave mixing of ordinary and backward waves. Such processes are commonly attributed to negative-index plasmonic metamaterials. This work demonstrates the possibility to replace such metamaterials that are very challenging to engineer by readily available crystals which support elastic waves with contra-directed phase and group velocities. The main goal of this work is to investigate specific properties of indicated nonlinear optical process in short pulse regime and to show that it enables elimination of fundamental detrimental effect of fast damping of optical phonons on the process concerned. Among the applications is the possibility of creation of a family of unique photonic devices such as unidirectional Raman amplifiers and femtosecond pulse shapers with greatly improved operational properties.

Nonlinear-optical up and down frequency-converting backward-wave metasensors and metamirrors

A concept of a family of unique backward-wave photonic devices, such as frequency up and down converting nonlinear-optical mirrors, sensors, modulators, filters and amplifiers is proposed. Novel materials are considered, which support coexistence of ordinary and backward waves and thus enable enhanced nonlinear-optical frequency-conversion processes. Particular properties of short-pulse regime are investigated.

Merging Nonlinear Optics and Negative-Index Metamaterials

The extraordinary properties of nonlinear optical propagation processes in double-domain positive/negative index metamaterials are reviewed. These processes include second harmonic generation, three- and four-wave frequency mixing, and optical parametric amplification. Striking contrasts with the properties of the counterparts in ordinary materials are shown. We also discuss the possibilities for compensating strong losses inherent to plasmonic metamaterials, which present a major obstacle in numerous exciting applications, and the possibilities for creation of unique ultracompact photonic devices such as data processing chips and nonlinear-optical sensors. Finally, we propose similar extraordinary three-wave mixing processes in crystals based on optical phonons with negative dispersion.

Negative group velocity and three-wave mixing in dielectric crystals

Extraordinary features of optical parametric amplification of Stokes electromagnetic waves are investigated, which originate from three-wave mixing of two ordinary electromagnetic and one backward phonon wave with negative group velocity. A similarity with the counterpart in the negative-index plasmonic metamaterials and differences with those utilizing contra-propagating ordinary electromagnetic waves as well as electromagnetic and acoustic phonon waves are shown. They stem from backwardness of optical phonons with negative dispersion. Nonlinear-optical photonic devices with the properties similar to those predicted for the negative-index metamaterials are proposed.

Coherent Nonlinear Optics and Quantum Control in Negative-Index Metamaterials

The extraordinary properties of laser-induced transparency of a negative-index slab and parametric amplification for a backward-wave signal are investigated. The effects of the idler absorption and phase mismatch on the amplification of the signal are studied, and the feasibility of ensuring robust transparency for a broad range of control field intensities and slab thicknesses is shown. A particular option consisting of the independent engineering of a strong four-wave mixing response and the negative refractive index is proposed and its specific features are investigated. The feasibility of quantum control over the slab transparency in such a scheme is confirmed through numerical experiments. We thus show opportunities and conditions for the compensation of the strong absorption inherent to plasmonic negative-index metamaterials, and we further show achievable transparency through coherent energy transfer from the control optical field to the negative-index signal.

Resonant nonlinear optics of backward waves in negative-index metamaterials

The extraordinary properties of resonant four-wave mixing of backward waves in doped negative-index materials are investigated. The feasibility of independent engineering of negative refractive index and nonlinear optical response as well as quantum control of the nonlinear propagation process in such composites is shown due to the coherent energy transfer from the control to the signal field. Laser-induced transparency, quantum switching, frequency-tunable narrow-band filtering, amplification, and realizing a miniature mirrorless optical parametric generator of the entangled backward and ordinary waves are among the possible applications of the investigated processes.

Mirrorless Negative-index Parametric Micro-oscillator

The feasibility and extraordinary properties of mirrorless parametric oscillations in strongly absorbing negative-index metamaterials are shown. They stem from the backwardness of electromagnetic waves inherent to this type of metamaterials.

Enhanced four-wave mixing via elimination of inhomogeneous broadening by coherent driving of quantum transition with control fields

We show that atoms from wide velocity interval can be concurrently involved in Doppler-free two-photon resonant far from frequency degenerate four-wave mixing with the aid of auxiliary electromagnetic field. This gives rise to substantial enhancement of the output radiation generated in optically thick medium. Numerical illustrations addressed to typical experimental conditions are given.
