Covariant singularities in Quantum Field Theory and Quantum Gravity

It is rather well-known that spacetime singularities are not covariant under field redefinitions. A manifestly covariant approach to singularities in classical gravity was proposed in arXiv:2008.09387. In this paper, we start to extend this analysis to the quantum realm. We identify two types of covariant singularities in field space corresponding to geodesic incompleteness and ill-defined path integrals (hereby dubbed functional singularities). We argue that the former might not be harmful after all, whilst the latter makes all observables undefined. We show that the path-integral measure is regular in any four-dimensional theory of gravity without matter or in any theory in which gravity is either absent or treated semi-classically. This might suggest the absence of functional singularities in these cases, however it can only be confirmed with a thorough analysis, case by case, of the path integral. We provide a topological and model-independent classification of functional singularities using homotopy groups and we discuss examples of theories with and without such singularities.

Classical and quantum cosmology of Born-Infeld type models

We discuss Born-Infeld type fields (tachyon fields) in classical and quantum cosmology. We first partly review and partly extend the discussion of the classical solutions and focus in particular on the occurrence of singularities. For quantization, we employ geometrodynamics. In the case of constant potential, we discuss both Wheeler-DeWitt quantization and reduced quantization. We are able to give various solutions and discuss their asymptotics. For the case of general potential, we transform the Wheeler-DeWitt equation to a form where it leads to a difference equation. Such a difference equation was previously found in the quantization of black holes. We give explicit results for the cases of constant potential and inverse squared potential and point out special features possessed by solutions of the difference equation.

Dark matter effects in vacuum spacetime

We analyze a toy model describing an empty spacetime in which the motion of a test mass (and the trajectories of photons) evidence the presence of a continuous and homogeneous distribution of matter; however, since the energy-momentum tensor vanishes, no real matter or energy distribution is present at all. Thus, a hypothetical observer will conclude that he is immersed in some sort of dark matter, even though he has no chance to directly detect it. This suggests yet another possibility of explaining the elusive dark matter as a purely dynamical effect due to the curvature of spacetime.

Quantum cosmology with big-brake singularity

We investigate a cosmological model with a big-brake singularity in the future: while the first time derivative of the scale factor goes to zero, its second time derivative tends to minus infinity. Although we also discuss the classical version of the model in some detail, our main interest lies in its quantization. We formulate the Wheeler-DeWitt equation and derive solutions describing wave packets. We show that all such solutions vanish in the region of the classical singularity, a behaviour which we interpret as singularity avoidance. We then discuss the same situation in loop quantum cosmology. While this leads to a different factor ordering, the singularity is there avoided, too.

Many-worlds interpretation of quantum theory and mesoscopic anthropic principle

We suggest to combine the Anthropic Principle with Many-Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Theory. Realizing the multiplicity of worlds it provides an opportunity of explanation of some important events which are assumed to be extremely improbable. The Mesoscopic Anthropic Principle suggested here is aimed to explain appearance of such events which are necessary for emergence of Life and Mind. It is complementary to Cosmological Anthropic Principle explaining the fine tuning of fundamental constants. We briefly discuss various possible applications of Mesoscopic Anthropic Principle including the Solar Eclipses and assembling of complex molecules. Besides, we address the problem of Time's Arrow in the framework of Many-World Interpretation. We suggest the recipe for disentangling of quantities defined by fundamental physical laws and by an anthropic selection.

Stability properties of some perfect fluid cosmological models

Flat FRW perfect fluid cosmologies can be reproduced as particular solutions of suitable field theoretical models. Here we investigate the stability of perfect fluid model trajectories with respect to sets of trajectories of the corresponding field models having generic initial conditions. It is shown that the trajectories of barotropic perfect fluid models and those of the Chaplygin gas model are stable. The total probability to reach the Chaplygin gas regime early enough to achieve a matter dominated stage having a realistic duration is calculated for a scalar field model assuming a natural measure in the space of initial conditions taken near a cosmological singularity. An example is presented of a two-fluid cosmological model where the stability is partially absent.

Graviton oscillations in the two-brane world

We study the braneworld effective action in the two-brane Randall-Sundrum model. In the framework of this essentially-nonlocal action we reveal the origin of an infinite sequence of gravitational wave modes -- the usual massless one as well as the tower of Kaluza-Klein massive ones. Mixing of the modes, which parametrically depends on the background value of the modulus of the extra dimension, can be interpreted as radion-induced gravitational-wave oscillations, a classical analogue to meson and neutrino oscillations. We show that these oscillations arising in M-theory-inspired braneworld setups could lead to effects detectable by gravitational-wave interferometers.

Nonlocal braneworld action: an alternative to Kaluza-Klein description

We construct the nonlocal braneworld action in the two-brane Randall-Sundrum model in a holographic setup alternative to Kaluza-Klein description: the action is written as a functional of the two metric and radion fields on the branes. This action effectively describes the dynamics of the gravitational field both on the branes and in the bulk in terms of the brane geometries directly accessible for observations. Its nonlocal form factors incorporate the cumulative effect of the bulk Kaluza-Klein modes. We also consider the reduced version of this action obtained by integrating out the fields on the negative-tension brane invisible from the viewpoint of the Planckian brane observer. This effective action features a nontrivial transition (AdS flow) between the local and nonlocal phases of the theory associated with the limits of small and large interbrane separation. Our results confirm a recently proposed braneworld scenario with diverging (repulsive) branes and suggest possible new implications of this phase transition in brane cosmology.

Can the Chaplygin gas be a plausible model for dark energy?

In this note two cosmological models representing the flat Friedmann Universe filled with a Chaplygin fluid, with or without dust, are analyzed in terms of the recently proposed "statefinder" parameters. Trajectories of both models in the parameter plane are shown to be significantly different w.r.t. "quiessence" and "tracker" models. The generalized Chaplygin gas model with an equation of state of the form $p = -A/ρ^α$ is also analyzed in terms of the statefinder parameters.
