Parton showering with higher-logarithmic accuracy for soft emissions

The accuracy of parton-shower simulations is often a limiting factor in the interpretation of data from high-energy colliders. We present the first formulation of parton showers with accuracy one order beyond state-of-the-art next-to-leading logarithms, for classes of observable that are dominantly sensitive to low-energy (soft) emissions, specifically non-global observables and subjet multiplicities. This represents a major step towards general next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy for parton showers.

Precise predictions for same-sign W-boson scattering at the LHC

Vector-boson scattering processes are of great importance for the current run-II and future runs of the Large Hadron Collider. The presence of triple and quartic gauge couplings in the process gives access to the gauge sector of the Standard Model (SM) and possible new-physics contributions there. To test any new-physics hypothesis, sound knowledge of the SM contributions is necessary, with a precision which at least matches the experimental uncertainties of existing and forthcoming measurements. In this article we present a detailed study of the vector-boson scattering process with two positively-charged leptons and missing transverse momentum in the final state. In particular, we first carry out a systematic comparison of the various approximations that are usually performed for this kind of process against the complete calculation, at LO and NLO QCD accuracy. Such a study is performed both in the usual fiducial region used by experimental collaborations and in a more inclusive phase space, where the differences among the various approximations lead to more sizeable effects. Afterwards, we turn to predictions matched to parton showers, at LO and NLO: we show that on the one hand, the inclusion of NLO QCD corrections leads to more stable predictions, but on the other hand the details of the matching and of the parton-shower programs cause differences which are considerably larger than those observed at fixed order, even in the experimental fiducial region. We conclude with recommendations for experimental studies of vector-boson scattering processes.

Precise predictions for double-Higgs production via vector-boson fusion

Theoretical predictions with next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD accuracy combined with the next-to-leading order (NLO) electroweak (EW) corrections are presented for differential observables of the double-Higgs production process via vector-boson fusion. While the QCD corrections were previously known, the EW ones are computed here for the first time. The numerical results are obtained for a realistic experimental set-up at the LHC and are presented in the form of fiducial cross sections and differential distributions. Within this setup we find that the VBF approximation employed in the NNLO QCD correction is accurate at the sub-percent level. We find that the NLO EW corrections within the fiducial volume are $-6.1\%$, making them of almost the same order as the NLO QCD corrections. In some kinematic regions they can grow as large as $-30\%$ making them the dominant radiative corrections. When the EW corrections are combined with the NNLO QCD corrections we find a total correction of $-14.8\%$. The results presented here thus comprise the state-of-the-art theoretical predicition for the double-Higgs production via vector-boson fusion, which will be of value to the high-luminosity programme at the LHC.

On the impact of non-factorisable corrections in VBF single and double Higgs production

We study the factorisable and non-factorisable QCD corrections to Vector-Boson Fusion single and double Higgs production and show the combined corrections for both processes at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$. We investigate the validity of the eikonal approximation with and without selection cuts, and carry out an in-depth study of the relative size of the non-factorisable next-to-next-to-leading order corrections compared to the factorisable ones. In the case of single Higgs production, after selection cuts are applied, the non-factorisable corrections are found to be mostly contained within the factorisable scale uncertainty bands. When no cuts are applied, instead, the non-factorisable corrections are slightly outside the scale uncertainty band. Interestingly, for double Higgs production, we find that both before and after applying cuts, non-factorisable corrections are enhanced compared to the single Higgs case. We trace this enhancement to the existence of delicate cancellations between the various leading-order Feynman diagrams, which are partly spoiled by radiative corrections. All the studied contributions have been implemented in proVBFH v1.2.0 and proVBFHH v1.1.0.

Soft spin correlations in final-state parton showers

We introduce a simple procedure that resolves the long-standing question of how to account for single-logarithmic spin-correlation effects in parton showers not just in the collinear limit, but also in the soft wide-angle limit, at leading colour. We discuss its implementation in the context of the PanScales family of parton showers, where it complements our earlier treatment of the purely collinear spin correlations. Comparisons to fixed-order matrix elements help validate our approach up to third order in the strong coupling, and an appendix demonstrates the small size of residual subleading-colour effects. To help probe wide-angle soft spin correlation effects, we introduce a new declustering-based non-global spin-sensitive observable, the first of its kind. Our showers provide a reference for its single-logarithmic resummation. The work in this paper represents the last step required for final-state massless showers to satisfy the broad PanScales next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy goals.

Spin correlations in final-state parton showers and jet observables

As part of a programme to develop parton showers with controlled logarithmic accuracy, we consider the question of collinear spin correlations within the PanScales family of parton showers. We adapt the well-known Collins-Knowles spin-correlation algorithm to PanScales antenna and dipole showers, using an approach with similarities to that taken by Richardson and Webster. To study the impact of spin correlations, we develop Lund-declustering based observables that are sensitive to spin-correlation effects both within and between jets and extend the MicroJets collinear single-logarithmic resummation code to include spin correlations. Together with a 3-point energy correlation observable proposed recently by Chen, Moult and Zhu, this provides a powerful set of constraints for validating the logarithmic accuracy of our shower results. The new observables and their resummation further open the pathway to phenomenological studies of these important quantum mechanical effects.

Parton-shower effects in Higgs production via Vector-Boson Fusion

We present a systematic investigation of parton-shower and matching perturbative uncertainties for Higgs-boson production via vector-boson fusion. To this end we employ different generators at next-to-leading order QCD accuracy matched with shower Monte Carlo programs, PYTHIA8, and HERWIG7, and a next-to-next-to-leading order QCD calculation. We thoroughly analyse the intrinsic sources of uncertainty within each generator, and then compare predictions among the different tools using the respective recommended setups. Within typical vector-boson fusion cuts, the resulting uncertainties on observables that are accurate to next-to-leading order are at the 10% level for rates and even smaller for shapes. For observables sensitive to extra radiation effects uncertainties of about 20% are found. We furthermore show how a specific recoil scheme is needed when PYTHIA8 is employed, in order not to encounter unphysical enhancements for these observables. We conclude that for vector-boson fusion processes an assessment of the uncertainties associated with simulation at next-to-leading order matched to parton showers based only on the variation of renormalisation, factorisation and shower scales systematically underestimates their true size.

Parton-shower effects in electroweak $WZjj$ production at the next-to-leading order of QCD

We present an implementation of $WZjj$ production via vector-boson fusion in the POWHEG BOX, a public tool for the matching of next-to-leading order QCD calculations with multi-purpose parton-shower generators. We provide phenomenological results for electroweak $WZjj$ production with fully leptonic decays at the LHC in realistic setups and discuss theoretical uncertainties associated with the simulation. We find that beyond the leading-order approximation the dependence on the unphysical factorization and renormalization scales is mild. The two tagging jets are furthermore very stable against parton-shower effects. However, considerable sensitivities to the shower Monte-Carlo program used are observed for central-jet veto observables.

Fully differential Vector-Boson Fusion Higgs Pair Production at Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order

We calculate the fully differential next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to vector-boson fusion (VBF) Higgs pair production. This calculation is achieved in the limit in which there is no colored cross-talk between the colliding protons, using the projection-to-Born method. We present differential cross sections of key observables, showing corrections of up to 3-4% at this order after typical VBF cuts, with the total cross section receiving contributions of about 2%. In contrast to single Higgs VBF production, we find that the NNLO corrections are for the most part within the next-to-leading order scale uncertainty bands.

Vector-Boson Fusion Higgs Pair Production at N$^3$LO

We calculate the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) QCD corrections to vector-boson fusion (VBF) Higgs pair production in the limit in which there is no partonic exchange between the two protons. We show that the inclusive cross section receives negligible corrections at this order, while the scale variation uncertainties are reduced by a factor four. We present differential distributions for the transverse momentum and rapidity of the final state Higgs bosons, and show that there is almost no kinematic dependence to the third order corrections. Finally we study the impact of deviations from the Standard Model in the trilinear Higgs coupling, and show that the structure of the higher order corrections does not depend on the self-coupling. These results are implemented in the latest release of the proVBFH-incl program.

Fully differential VBF Higgs production at NNLO

We calculate the fully differential next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) corrections to vector-boson fusion (VBF) Higgs production at proton colliders, in the limit in which there is no cross-talk between the hadronic systems associated with the two protons. We achieve this using a new "projection-to-Born" method that combines an inclusive NNLO calculation in the structure-function approach and a suitably factorised next-to-leading-order (NLO) VBF Higgs plus 3-jet calculation, using appropriate Higgs plus 2-parton counter events. An earlier calculation of the fully inclusive cross section had found small NNLO corrections, at the 1% level. In contrast, the cross section after typical experimental VBF cuts receives NNLO contributions of about 4%, while differential distributions show corrections of up to 6-7% for some standard observables. The corrections are often outside the NLO scale-uncertainty band.

Vector-boson fusion Higgs production at N$^3$LO in QCD

We calculate the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-order (N$^3$LO) QCD corrections to inclusive vector-boson fusion (VBF) Higgs production at proton colliders, in the limit in which there is no colour exchange between the hadronic systems associated with the two colliding protons. We also provide differential cross sections for the Higgs transverse momentum and rapidity distributions. We find that the corrections are at the 1-2 permille level, well within the scale-uncertainty of the next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) calculation. The associated scale-uncertainty of the N$^3$LO calculation is typically found to be below the 2 permille level. We also consider theoretical uncertainties due to missing higher order parton distribution functions, and provide an estimate of their importance.

NNLOPS accurate Drell-Yan production

We present a next-to-next-to-leading order accurate description of Drell-Yan lepton pair production processes through $γ^*/Z$ or $W$ exchange that includes consistently parton shower effects. Results are obtained by upgrading the vector-boson plus one jet NLO calculation in POWHEG with the MiNLO procedure and by applying an appropriate reweighting procedure making use of the DYNNLO program. We compare to existing data and to accurate resummed calculations.

Electroweak $ZZjj$ production in the Standard Model and beyond in the POWHEG-BOX V2

We present an implementation of electroweak $ZZjj$ production in the POWHEG BOX V2 framework, an upgrade of the POWHEG BOX program which includes a number of new features that are particularly helpful for high-multiplicity processes. We consider leptonic and semi-leptonic decay modes of the Z bosons, and take non-resonant contributions and spin correlations of the final-state particles into account. In the case of decays to leptons, we also include interactions beyond the Standard Model that arise from an effective Lagrangian which includes CP conserving and violating operators up to dimension six. We find that while leptonic distributions are very sensitive to anomalous couplings, because of the small cross-section involved, these analyses are feasible only after a high-luminosity upgrade of the LHC. We consider the cases of a 14 TeV, 33 TeV and 100 TeV machine and discuss the limits that can be placed on those couplings for different luminosities.

The main goal is to clarify and allow for straightforward application of these Feynman rules. We comment on the connection between BCFW recursion relations and space-cone gauge.
