Lecture notes on operator algebras and their application in physics

Lecture notes to a one-term course on operator algebras and their application in physics. Very brief and basic introduction to the subject of Banach- and C-star algebras complemented with their appearance in physics. The course is intended at mathematics students in their master program with a basic knowledge of functional analysis and some interest in the foundations of quantum mechanics.

Relation between Hardy components for locally supported vector fields on the sphere

Given a function in the Hardy space of inner harmonic gradients on the sphere, H+(S), we consider the problem of finding a corresponding function in the Hardy space of outer harmonic gradients on the sphere, H-(S), such that the sum of both functions differs from a locally supported vector field only by a tangential divergence-free contribution. We characterize the subspace of H+(S) that allows such a continuation and show that it is dense but not closed within H+(S). Furthermore, we derive the linear mapping that maps a vector field from this subspace of H+(S) to the corresponding unique vector field in H-(S). The explicit construction uses layer potentials but involves unbounded operators. We indicate some bounded extremal problems supporting a possible numerical evaluation of this mapping between the Hardy components. The original motivation to study this problem comes from an inverse magnetization problem with localization constraints.

Minimizers of the dynamical Boulatov model

We study the Euler-Lagrange equation of the dynamical Boulatov model which is a simplicial model for 3d Euclidean quantum gravity augmented by a Laplace-Beltrami operator. We provide all its solutions on the space of left and right invariant functions that render the interaction of the model an equilateral tetrahedron. Surprisingly, for a non-linear equation of motion, the solution space forms a vector space. This space distinguishes three classes of solutions: saddle points, global and local minima of the action. Our analysis shows that there exists one parameter region of coupling constants for which the action admits degenerate global minima.

Inequivalent coherent state representations in group field theory

In this paper we propose an algebraic formulation of group field theory and consider non-Fock representations based on coherent states. We show that we can construct representations with infinite number of degrees of freedom on compact base manifolds. We also show that these representations break translation symmetry. Since such representations can be regarded as quantum gravitational systems with an infinite number of fundamental pre-geometric building blocks, they may be more suitable for the description of effective geometrical phases of the theory.

Continuous point symmetries in Group Field Theories

We discuss the notion of symmetries in non-local field theories characterized by integro-differential equations of motion, from a geometric perspective. We then focus on Group Field Theory (GFT) models of quantum gravity and provide a general analysis of their continuous point symmetry transformations, including the generalized conservation laws following from them.

Generalised conservation laws in non-local field theories

We propose a geometrical treatment of symmetries in non-local field theories, where the non-locality is due to a lack of identification of field arguments in the action. We show that the existence of a symmetry of the action leads to a generalised conservation law, in which the usual conserved current acquires an additional non-local correction term, obtaining a generalisation of the standard Noether theorem. We illustrate the general formalism by discussing the specific physical example of complex scalar field theory of the type describing the hydrodynamic approximation of Bose-Einstein condensates. We expect our analysis and results to be of particular interest for the group field theory formulation of quantum gravity.
