Coherent Phonon Blocking in Superlattices

At cryogenic temperatures, phonons become one of the dominant energy carriers and thus can strongly influence the performance of electronic and sensing devices. In this work, we present a wave-mechanics based framework that predicts phonon transmission and thermal resistance of arbitrarily thick superlattices while retaining all acoustic branches, mode-conversion pathways, and angles of incidence. By enforcing phase coherence, our model predicts frequency-dependent transmission through arbitrary multi-layered structures. We use a genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) to efficiently select both materials and layer thicknesses. Our success criterion is that constituent layers satisfy the quarter-wavelength condition of the dominant phonon frequencies at a target temperature. This strategy identifies novel bilayer combinations that achieve thermal resistance of up to 3000 times greater than previously reported superlattices. The identified superlattices are poised to advance any technology that relies on coherent acoustic scattering, from ultra-low-temperature thermal insulation in superconducting flip-chip assemblies to phonon-blocking components in micro- and nano-electromechanical systems.

Cosm: Collective Switched Motion for Fast and Accurate Sparse Ising Optimization

We introduce Collective Switched Motion (Cosm), a dynamical system-based heuristic algorithm. Cosm combines locally interacting continuous circular variables with novel global coordination rules that facilitate collective dynamics. Pairwise interactions occur sequentially over a set of conflict-free edge partitions, resulting in an interaction network that switches periodically. Unlike conventional gradient-based approaches, Cosm employs structured, non-smooth switching dynamics with finite-magnitude interactions that sustain collective fluctuations and promote exploration beyond local minima. A correlated perturbation mechanism further promotes coordinated cluster motion in the circular phase space. On the three largest Ising problems from the Gset suite, which have 10,000-20,000 variables and represent 2D spin glasses, Cosm attains the optimal solutions (verified with an exact solver) heuristically for the first time. On two large bounded-degree non-lattice graph instances, Cosm reduces the state-of-the-art times-to-target from hundreds of hours to 36-303 s. Results on benchmark problems with tuned hardness suggest favorable scaling relative to previously characterized dynamical solvers. These results suggest that Cosm's synthesis of local interactions, structured switching dynamics, and global coordination provides an effective computational framework for sparse optimization.

Fast, Lifetime-Preserving Readout for High-Coherence Quantum Annealers

We demonstrate, for the first time, that a quantum flux parametron (QFP) is capable of acting as both isolator and amplifier in the readout circuit of a capacitively shunted flux qubit (CSFQ). By treating the QFP like a tunable coupler and biasing it such that the coupling is off, we show that $T_1$ of the CSFQ is not impacted by Purcell loss from its low-Q readout resonator ($Q_e = 760$) despite being detuned by only $40$ MHz. When annealed, the QFP amplifies the qubit's persistent current signal such that it generates a flux qubit-state-dependent frequency shift of $85$ MHz in the readout resonator, which is over $9$ times its linewidth. The device is shown to read out a flux qubit in the persistent current basis with fidelities surpassing $98.6\%$ with only $80$ ns integration, and reaches fidelities of $99.6\%$ when integrated for $1$ $\mu$s. This combination of speed and isolation is critical to the readout of high-coherence quantum annealers.
