General Conditions for Lepton Flavour Violation at Tree- and 1-Loop Level

In this work, we compile the necessary and sufficient conditions a theory has to fulfill in order to ensure general lepton flavour conservation, in the spirit of the Glashow-Weinberg criteria for the absence of flavour-changing neutral currents. At tree-level, interactions involving electrically neutral and doubly charged bosons are investigated. We also investigate flavour changes at 1-loop level. In all cases we find that the essential theoretical requirements can be reduced to a few basic conditions on the particle content and the coupling matrices. For 1-loop diagrams, we also investigate how exactly a GIM-suppression can occur that will strongly reduce the rates of lepton flavour violating effects even if they are in principle present in a certain theory. In all chapters, we apply our criteria to several models which can in general induce lepton flavour violation, e.g. LR-symmetric models or the MSSM. In the end we give a summarizing table of the obtained results, thereby demonstrating the applicability of our criteria to a large class of models beyond the Standard Model.

Self-Calibration of Neutrino Detectors using characteristic Backgrounds

We introduce the possibility to use characteristic natural neutrino backgrounds, such as Geoneutrinos (\barν_e) or solar neutrinos (ν_e), with known spectral shape for the energy calibration of future neutrino detectors, e.g. Large Liquid Scintillator Detectors. This "CalEffect" could be used without the need to apply any modifications to the experiment in all situations where one has a suitable background with sufficient statistics. After deriving the effect analytically using χ^2 statistics, we show that it is only tiny for reactor neutrino experiments, but can be applicable in other situations. As an example, we present its impact on the identification of the wiggles in the power spectrum of supernova neutrinos caused by Earth matter effects. The Self-Calibration Effect could be used for cross checking other calibration methods and to resolve systematical effects in the primary neutrino interaction processes, in particular in the low energy cross sections.

Reactor Neutrino Experiments with a Large Liquid Scintillator Detector

We discuss several new ideas for reactor neutrino oscillation experiments with a Large Liquid Scintillator Detector. We consider two different scenarios for a measurement of the small mixing angle $θ_{13}$ with a mobile $\barν_e$ source: a nuclear-powered ship, such as a submarine or an icebreaker, and a land-based scenario with a mobile reactor. The former setup can achieve a sensitivity to $\sin^2 2θ_{13} \lesssim 0.003$ at the 90% confidence level, while the latter performs only slightly better than Double Chooz. Furthermore, we study the precision that can be achieved for the solar parameters, $\sin^2 2θ_{12}$ and $Δm_{21}^2$, with a mobile reactor and with a conventional power station. With the mobile reactor, a precision slightly better than from current global fit data is possible, while with a power reactor, the accuracy can be reduced to less than 1%. Such a precision is crucial for testing theoretical models, e.g. quark-lepton complementarity.
