Distance Reduction in Bouquet Decompositions and Toric Ideals of Graphs

The distance-reduction property for a generating set, i.e., a Markov basis, of a toric ideal is a condition that ensures tight connectivity of its fibres. In this paper, we study the distance-reduction property for toric ideals of graphs and move on to explore the relationship between the distance-reduction property and the bouquet structure of homogeneous toric ideals, which includes the class of toric ideals of graphs. For toric ideals of graphs which are complete intersection, we show that the minimal Markov bases are distance-reducing if and only if they distance-reduce the circuits of the ideal. We then consider how the distance-reduction properties interact with the bouquet structure of the toric ideal. Bouquets are a combinatorial structure that capture the essential combinatorial information of the toric ideal. Under the condition of homogeneity, we show that, for toric ideals with the same bouquet structure and signature, the distance-reduction properties are preserved. For homogeneous toric ideals whose bouquet matrix is a monomial curve in $\mathbb{A}^3$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for when the minimal Markov bases are distance-reducing.

The Smallest Invariant Factor of Elliptic Curves, and Coincidences

For an elliptic curve E over Q and a natural number j, Cojocaru has shown that there is an explicit constant C_E,j giving (under GRH) the density of primes p of good reduction such that the smallest invariant factor of E(F_p) is j. For E without complex multiplication, we study the question of when C_E,j is positive (a necessary and, on GRH, sufficient condition for there to be infinitely many such p), strengthening a result by Kim. Our arguments are group-theoretic using the image of the adelic Galois representation of E. Experimentally, C_E,j appears to vanish only when there is a coincidence of division fields; we document a number of families of such coincidences arising from abelian division fields.

Computing all minimal Markov bases in Macaulay2

We introduce the package allMarkovBases for Macaulay2, which is used to compute all minimal Markov bases of a given toric ideal. The package builds on functionality of 4ti2 by producing the fiber graph of the toric ideal. The package uses this graph to compute other properties of the toric ideal such as its indispensable set of binomials as well as its universal Markov basis.

Determination of the critical current density in the d-wave superconductor YBCO under applied magnetic fields by nodal tunneling

We have studied nodal tunneling into YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) films under magnetic fields. The films' orientation was such that the CuO2 planes were perpendicular to the surface with the a and b axis at 450 form the normal. The magnetic field was applied parallel to the surface and perpendicular to the CuO2 planes. The Zero Bias Conductance Peak (ZBCP) characteristic of nodal tunneling splits under the effect of surface currents produced by the applied fields. Measuring this splitting under different field conditions, zero field cooled and field cooled, reveals that these currents have different origins. By comparing the field cooled ZBCP splitting to that taken in decreasing fields we deduce a value of the Bean critical current superfluid velocity, and calculate a Bean critical current density of up to 3*10^7 A/cm2 at low temperatures. This tunneling method for the determination of critical currents under magnetic fields has serious advantages over the conventional one, as it avoids having to make high current contacts to the sample.
