Gromov-Hausdorff distance and Jung constant of finite-dimensional normed spaces

For a finite-dimensional normed space $V$ and a subset $X$ with finite Hausdorff distance from $V$, we prove that the Gromov--Hausdorff distance between $X$ and $V$ is at least the Hausdorff distance between $X$ and $V$, divided by twice the relative Jung constant of $V$. If $V$ furthermore satisfies a certain intersection property, we show a stronger result where the relative Jung constant can be replaced with its absolute version. Key words: Normed spaces, Jung constant, Hausdorff distance, Gromov--Hausdorff distance.

Calculating Gromov-Hausdorff Distance by means of Borsuk Number

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the connection between the properties of the Gromov--Hausdorff distance and the Borsuk conjecture. The Borsuk number of a given bounded metric space $X$ is the infimum of cardinal numbers $n$ such that $X$ can be partitioned into $n$ smaller parts (in the sense of diameter). An exact formula for the Gromov--Hausdorff distance between bounded metric spaces is obtained under the assumption that the diameter and cardinality of one space are less than the diameter and Borsuk number of another, respectively. Using the results of Bacon's equivalence between the Lusternik--Schnirelmann and Borsuk problems, several corollaries are obtained.

Isometric Embeddings of Bounded Metric Spaces into the Gromov-Hausdorff Class

It is shown that any bounded metric space can be isometrically embedded into the Gromov--Hausdorff metric class GH. This result is a consequence of local geometry description of the class GH in a sufficiently small neighborhood of a generic metric space. This description is interesting in itself. The technique of optimal correspondences and their distortions is used.

The Gromov-Hausdorff Distances between Simplexes and Ultrametric Spaces

In the present paper we investigate the Gromov--Hausdorff distances between a bounded metric space $X$ and so called simplex, i.e., a metric space all whose non-zero distances are the same. In the case when the simplex's cardinality does not exceed the cardinality of $X$, a new formula for this distance is obtained. The latter permits to derive an exact formula for the distance between a simplex and an ultrametric space.

Local Structure of Gromov-Hausdorff Space near Finite Metric Spaces in General Position

We investigate the local structure of the space $\mathcal{M}$ consisting of isometry classes of compact metric spaces, endowed with the Gromov-Hausdorff metric. We consider finite metric spaces of the same cardinality and suppose that these spaces are in general position, i.e., all nonzero distances in each of the spaces are distinct, and all triangle inequalities are strict. We show that sufficiently small balls in $\mathcal{M}$ centered at these spaces and having the same radii are isometric. As consequences, we prove that the cones over such spaces (with the vertices at one-point space) are isometrical; the isometry group of each sufficiently small ball centered at a general position $n$-points space, $n\ge3$, contains a subgroup isomorphic to the group $S_n$ of permutations of a set containing $n$ points.

Geometry of Compact Metric Space in Terms of Gromov-Hausdorff Distances to Regular Simplexes

In the present paper we investigate geometric characteristics of compact metric spaces, which can be described in terms of Gromov-Hausdorff distances to simplexes, i.e., to finite metric spaces such that all their nonzero distances are equal to each other. It turns out that these Gromov-Hausdorff distances depend on some geometrical characteristics of finite partitions of the compact metric spaces; some of the characteristics can be considered as a natural analogue of the lengths of edges of minimum spanning trees. As a consequence, we constructed an unexpected example of a continuum family of pairwise non-isometric finite metric spaces with the same distances to all simplexes.
