Towards Autonomous UAV Landing Based on Infrared Beacons and Particle Filtering

Autonomous fixed-wing UAV landing based on differential GPS is now a mainstream providing reliable and precise landing. But the task still remains challenging when GPS availability is limited like for military UAVs. We discuss a solution of this problem based on computer vision and dot markings along stationary or makeshift runway. We focus our attempts on using infrared beacons along with narrow-band filter as promising way to mark any makeshift runway and utilize particle filtering to fuse both IMU and visual data. We believe that unlike many other vision-based methods this solution is capable of tracking UAV position up to engines stop. System overview, algorithm description and it's evaluation on synthesized sequence along real recorded trajectory is presented.

Laser controlled charge-transfer reaction at low temperatures

We study the low-temperature charge transfer reaction between a neutral atom and an ion under the influence of near-resonant laser light. By setting up a multi-channel model with field-dressed states we demonstrate that the reaction rate coefficient can be enhanced by several orders of magnitude with laser intensities of $10^6$ W/cm$^2$ or larger. In addition, depending on laser frequency one can induce a significant enhancement or suppression of the charge-exchange rate coefficient. For our intensities multi-photon processes are not important.

Photoassociative production of ultracold heteronuclear YbLi* molecules

We report on the production of ultracold heteronuclear YbLi* molecules in a dual-species magneto-optical trap by photoassociation (PA). The formation of the electronically excited molecules close to dissociation was observed by trap loss spectroscopy. We find 4 rovibrational states within a range of $250\,$GHz below the Yb($^1S_0$) + Li($^2P_{1/2}$) asymptote and observe isotopic PA line shifts in mixtures of $^6$Li with $^{174}$Yb, $^{172}$Yb, and $^{176}$Yb. We also describe our theoretical ab-initio calculation for the relevant electronic potentials and utilize it to analyze and identify the lines in the experimentally observed spectrum.

Photodissociation spectroscopy of the dysprosium monochloride molecular ion

We have performed a combined experimental and theoretical study of the photodissociation cross section of the molecular ion DyCl$^+$. The photodissociation cross section for the photon energy range 35,500 cm$^{-1}$ to 47,500 cm$^{-1}$ is measured using an integrated ion trap and time-of-flight mass spectrometer; we observe a broad, asymmetric profile that is peaked near 43,000 cm$^{-1}$. The theoretical cross section is determined from electronic potentials and transition dipole moments calculated using the relativistic configuration-interaction valence-bond and coupled-cluster methods. The electronic structure of DyCl$^+$ is extremely complex due to the presence of multiple open electronic shells, including the 4f$^{10}$ configuration. The molecule has nine attractive potentials with ionically-bonded electrons and 99 repulsive potentials dissociating to a ground state Dy$^+$ ion and Cl atom. We explain the lack of symmetry in the cross section as due to multiple contributions from one-electron-dominated transitions between the vibrational ground state and several resolved repulsive excited states.

Magnetic field dependent interactions in an ultracold Li-Yb($^3$P$_2$) mixture

Magnetic Feshbach resonances have allowed great success in the production of ultracold diatomic molecules from bi-alkali mixtures, but have so far eluded observation in mixtures of alkali and alkaline-earth-like atoms. Inelastic collisional properties of ultracold atomic systems exhibit resonant behavior in the vicinity of such resonances, providing a detection signature. We study magnetic field dependent inelastic effects via atom loss spectroscopy in an ultracold heteronuclear mixture of alkali $^6$Li in the ground state and alkaline-earth-like $^{174}$Yb in an excited electronic metastable state ($^3$P$_2$, m$_J$ = -1). We observe a variation of the interspecies inelastic two-body rate coefficient by nearly one order of magnitude over a 100-520G magnetic field range. By comparing to ab-initio calculations we link our observations to interspecies Feshbach resonances arising from anisotropic interactions in this novel collisional system.

Radiative heat flux predictions in hyperbolic metamaterials

The transport of heat mediated by thermal photons in hyperbolic multilayer metamaterials is studied using the fluctuational electrodynamics theory. We demonstrate that in comparison to bulk materials the flux inside layered hyperbolic materials can be transported at much longer distances, making these media very promising for thermal management and for near-field energy harvesting.

Magnetic control of ultra-cold $^6$Li and $^{174}$Yb($^3P_2$) atom mixtures with Feshbach resonances

We theoretically evaluate the feasibility to form magnetically-tunable Feshbach molecules in collisions between fermionic $^6$Li atoms and bosonic metastable $^{174}$Yb($^3$P$_2$) atoms. In contrast to the well-studied alkali-metal atom collisions, collisions with meta-stable atoms are highly anisotropic. Our first-principle coupled-channel calculation of these collisions reveals the existence of broad Feshbach resonances due to the combined effect of anisotropic-molecular and atomic-hyperfine interactions. In order to fit our predictions to the specific positions of experimentally-observed broad resonance structures \cite{Deep2015} we optimized the shape of the short-range potentials by direct least-square fitting. This allowed us to identify the dominant resonance by its leading angular momentum quantum numbers and describe the role of collisional anisotropy in the creation and broadening of this and other resonances.

Action spectroscopy of SrCl$^+$ using an integrated ion trap time-of-flight mass spectrometer

The photodissociation cross-section of SrCl$^+$ is measured in the spectral range of 36000 -- 46000 cm$^{-1}$ using a modular time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS). By irradiating a sample of trapped SrCl$^+$ molecular ions with a pulsed dye laser, X$^1Σ^+$ state molecular ions are electronically excited to the repulsive wall of the A$^1Π$ state, resulting in dissociation. Using the TOF-MS, the fragments are detected and the photodissociation cross-section is determined for a broad range of photon energies. Detailed $\textit{ab initio}$ calculations of the molecular potentials and spectroscopic constants are also performed and are found to be in good agreement with experiment. The spectroscopic constants for SrCl$^+$ are also compared to those of another alkaline earth chalcogen, BaCl$^+$, in order to highlight structural differences between the two molecular ions. This work represents the first spectroscopy and $\textit{ab initio}$ calculations of SrCl$^+$.

Ultracold Heteronuclear Mixture of Ground and Excited State Atoms

We report on the realization of an ultracold mixture of lithium atoms in the ground state and ytterbium atoms in the excited metastable 3P2 state. Such a mixture can support broad magnetic Feshbach resonances which may be utilized for the production of ultracold molecules with an electronic spin degree of freedom, as well as novel Efimov trimers. We investigate the interaction properties of the mixture in the presence of an external magnetic field and find an upper limit for the background interspecies two-body inelastic decay coefficient of K'2 < 3e-12 cm^3/s for the 3P2 m_J=-1 substate. We calculate the dynamic polarizabilities of the Yb 3P2 magnetic substates for a range of wavelengths, and find good agreement with our measurements at 1064nm. Our calculations also allow the identification of magic frequencies where Yb ground and metastable states are identically trapped and the determination of the interspecies van der Waals coefficients.

Quantum Chaos in Ultracold Collisions of Erbium

Atomic and molecular samples reduced to temperatures below 1 microkelvin, yet still in the gas phase, afford unprecedented energy resolution in probing and manipulating how their constituent particles interact with one another. For simple atoms, such as alkalis, scattering resonances are extremely well-characterized. However, ultracold physics is now poised to enter a new regime, where far more complex species can be cooled and studied, including magnetic lanthanide atoms and even molecules. For molecules, it has been speculated that a dense forest of resonances in ultracold collision cross sections will likely express essentially random fluctuations, much as the observed energy spectra of nuclear scattering do. According to the Bohigas-Giannoni-Schmit conjecture, these fluctuations would imply chaotic dynamics of the underlying classical motion driving the collision. This would provide a paradigm shift in ultracold atomic and molecular physics, necessitating new ways of looking at the fundamental interactions of atoms in this regime, as well as perhaps new chaos-driven states of ultracold matter. In this report we provide the first experimental demonstration that random spectra are indeed found at ultralow temperatures. In the experiment, an ultracold gas of erbium atoms is shown to exhibit many Fano-Feshbach resonances, for bosons on the order of 3 per gauss. Analysis of their statistics verifies that their distribution of nearest-neighbor spacings is what one would expect from random matrix theory. The density and statistics of these resonances are explained by fully-quantum mechanical scattering calculations that locate their origin in the anisotropy of the atoms' potential energy surface. Our results therefore reveal for the first time chaotic behavior in the native interaction between ultracold atoms.

External field control of spin-dependent rotational decoherence of ultracold polar molecules

We determine trapping conditions for ultracold polar molecules, where pairs of internal states experience identical trapping potentials. Such conditions could ensure that detrimental effects of inevitable inhomogeneities across an ultracold sample are significantly reduced. In particular, we investigate the internal rovibronic and hyperfine quantum states of ultracold fermionic ground-state $^{40}$K$^{87}$Rb polar molecules, when static magnetic, static electric, and trapping laser fields are simultaneously applied. Understanding the effect of changing the relative orientation or polarization of these three fields is of crucial importance for creation of decoherence-free subspaces built from two or more rovibronic states. Moreover, we evaluate the induced dipole moment of the molecule in the presence of these fields, which will allow control of interactions between molecules in different sites of an optical lattice and study the influence of the interaction anisotropy on the ability to entangle polar molecules.

Comment on "Linear and passive silicon optical isolator" in Scientific Reports 2, 674

Wang et al. [1] demonstrated different power transmission coefficients for forward and backward propagation in simulation and experiment. From such a demonstration, the central claim of their paper is that "the spatial inversion symmetry breaking diode can construct an optical isolator in no conflict with any reciprocal principle". Their claim contradicts the Lorentz reciprocity theorem, from which it is well known that one cannot construct an isolator this way.

Post-Newtonian Celestial Dynamics in Cosmology: Field Equations

The present paper outlines theoretical principles of the post-Newtonian mechanics in the expanding universe. It is based upon the gauge-invariant theory of the Lagrangian perturbations of cosmological manifold caused by an isolated astronomical N-body system. We postulate that the background manifold is described by Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric governed by two primary components - the dark matter and the dark energy. The dark matter is treated as an ideal fluid. The dark energy is described by a single scalar field with a potential which is hold unspecified as long as the theory permits. The Lagrangian of the dark matter and that of the scalar field are formulated in terms of the field variables. We use variational calculus to derive the gauge-invariant field equations of the post-Newtonian celestial mechanics of an isolated astronomical system in an expanding universe. These equations generalize the field equations of the post-Newtonian theory in asymptotically-flat spacetime by taking into account the cosmological effects explicitly. We introduce a new cosmological gauge which generalizes the harmonic gauge of the post-Newtonian theory in asymptotically-flat spacetime. This gauge significantly simplifies the gravitational field equations and allows finding out the approximations where the field equations can be fully decoupled and solved analytically. The residual gauge freedom is explored. The results of the present paper can be useful in the solar system for calculating more precise ephemerides of the solar system bodies on extremely long time intervals, in galactic astronomy to study the dynamics of clusters of galaxies, and in gravitational wave astronomy for discussing the impact of cosmology on generation and propagation of gravitational waves emitted by coalescing binaries and/or merging galactic nuclei.

Anisotropy induced Feshbach resonances in a quantum dipolar gas of magnetic atoms

We explore the anisotropic nature of Feshbach resonances in the collision between ultracold magnetic submerged-shell dysprosium atoms, which can only occur due to couplings to rotating bound states. This is in contrast to well-studied alkali-metal atom collisions, where most Feshbach resonances are hyperfine induced and due to rotation-less bound states. Our novel first-principle coupled-channel calculation of the collisions between open-4f-shell spin-polarized bosonic dysprosium reveals a striking correlation between the anisotropy due to magnetic dipole-dipole and electrostatic interactions and the Feshbach spectrum as a function of an external magnetic field. Over a 20 mT magnetic field range we predict about a dozen Feshbach resonances and show that the resonance locations are exquisitely sensitive to the dysprosium isotope.

Comment on "Nonreciprocal Light Propagation in a Silicon Photonic Circuit" in Science 333, 729-733 (2011)

In the recent article by Feng et al. [Science 333, 729-733 (2011)] a system is proposed with a periodic spatial modulation of refractive index and absorption. It is claimed that this system is nonreciprocal and can be used as an optical isolator. The authors use an unconventional definition of reciprocity and thus make wrong conclusions on the applicability of the described phenomena for optical isolators. Ab initio properties of Li-Group-II molecules for ultracold matter studies

We perform a systematic investigation of the electronic properties of the $^2Σ^+$ ground state of Li-alkaline-earth dimers. These molecules are proposed as possible candidates for quantum simulation of lattice-spin models. We apply powerful quantum chemistry coupled-cluster methods with large basis sets to calculate potential energies, permanent dipole moment, and electron density distributions for LiBe, LiMg, LiCa, LiSr, and LiYb. Our results reveal a surprising irregularity in the dissociation energy and bond length with an increase in the reduced mass of the molecule. At the same time the permanent dipole moment at the equilibrium separation has the smallest value between 0.01 a.u. and 0.1 a.u. for the heaviest (LiSr and LiYb) molecules and increases to 1.4 a.u. for the lightest (LiBe), where 1 a.u. is one atomic unit of dipole moment. We consider our study of the $^2Σ^+$ molecules a first step towards a comprehensive analysis of their interactions in an optical trap.

Universalities in ultracold reactions of alkali polar molecules

We consider ultracold collisions of ground-state, heteronuclear alkali dimers that are susceptible to four-center chemical reactions 2 AB -> A2 + B2 even at sub-microKelvin temperature. These reactions depend strongly on species, temperature, electric field, and confinement in an optical lattice. We calculate ab initio van der Walls coefficients for these interactions, and use a quantum formalism to study the scattering properties of such molecules under an external electric field and optical lattice. We also apply a quantum threshold model to explore the dependence of reaction rates on the various parameters. We find that, among the heteronuclear alkali fermionic species, LiNa is the least reactive, whereas LiCs is the most reactive. For the bosonic species, LiK is the most reactive in zero field, but all species considered - LiNa, LiK, LiRb, LiCs, and KRb - share a universal reaction rate once a sufficiently high electric field is applied.
