Connection formulae for the radial Toda equations II

This is a continuation of [arXiv:2309.16550] in which we computed the asymptotics near $x = \infty$ of all solutions of the radial Toda equation. In this article, we compute the asymptotics near $x = \infty$ of all solutions of a "partner" equation. The equations are related in the sense that their respective monodromy data constitute connected components of the same "monodromy manifold". While all solutions of the radial Toda equation are smooth, those of the partner equation have infinitely many singularities, and this makes the Riemann-Hilbert nonlinear steepest descent method (and the asymptotics of solutions) more involved.

The non-linear steepest descent approach to the singular asymptotics of the sinh-Gordon reduction of the Painlev\'e III equation

Motivated by the simplest case of tt*-Toda equations, we study the large and small $x$ asymptotics for $x>0$ of real solutions of the sinh-Godron Painlev\'e III($D_6$) equation. These solutions are parametrized through the monodromy data of the corresponding Riemann-Hilbert problem. This unified approach provides connection formulae between the behavior at the origin and infinity of the considered solutions.

Nonlinear steepest descent on a torus: A case study of the Landau-Lifshitz equation

We obtain rigorous large time asymptotics for the Landau-Lifshitz equation in the soliton free case by extending the nonlinear steepest descent method to genus 1 surfaces. The methods presented in this paper pave the way to a rigorous analysis of other integrable equations on the torus and enable asymptotic analysis on different regimes of the Landau-Lifshitz equation.

The tt*-Toda equations of A_n type

In previous articles we have studied the A_n tt*-Toda equations (topological-antitopological fusion equations of Toda type) of Cecotti and Vafa, giving details mainly for n=3. Here we give a proof of the existence and uniqueness of global solutions for any n, and a new treatment of their asymptotic data, monodromy data, and Stokes data.

Connection formulae for the radial Toda equations I

This paper is the first in a forthcoming series of works where the authors study the global asymptotic behavior of the radial solutions of the 2D periodic Toda equation of type $A_n$. The principal issue is the connection formulae between the asymptotic parameters describing the behavior of the general solution at zero and infinity. To reach this goal we are using a fusion of the PDE analysis and the Riemann-Hilbert nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou which is applicable to 2D Toda in view of its Lax integrability. A principal technical challenge is the extension of the nonlinear steepest descent analysis to Riemann-Hilbert problems of matrix rank greater than $2$. In this paper, we meet this challenge for the case $n=2$ (the rank $3$ case) and it already captures the principal features of the general $n$ case.

Isomonodromy aspects of the tt* equations of Cecotti and Vafa III. Iwasawa factorization and asymptotics

This paper, the third in a series, completes our description of all (radial) solutions on C* of the tt*-Toda equations, using a combination of methods from p.d.e., isomonodromic deformations (Riemann-Hilbert method), and loop groups. We place these global solutions into the broader context of solutions which are smooth near 0. For such solutions, we compute explicitly the Stokes data and connection matrix of the associated meromorphic system, in the resonant cases as well as the non-resonant case. This allows us to give a complete picture of the monodromy data of the global solutions.

Isomonodromy aspects of the tt* equations of Cecotti and Vafa I. Stokes data

We describe all smooth solutions of the two-function tt*-Toda equations (a version of the tt* equations, or equations for harmonic maps into SL(n,R)/SO(n)) in terms of (i) asymptotic data, (ii) holomorphic data, and (iii) monodromy data. This allows us to find all solutions with integral Stokes data. These include solutions associated to nonlinear sigma models (quantum cohomology) or Landau-Ginzburg models (unfoldings of singularities), as conjectured by Cecotti and Vafa.

Isomonodromy aspects of the tt* equations of Cecotti and Vafa II. Riemann-Hilbert problem

In Part I (arXiv:1209.2045) we computed the Stokes data, though not the "connection matrix", for the smooth solutions of the tt*-Toda equations whose existence we established by p.d.e. methods. Here we give an alternative proof of the existence of some of these solutions by solving a Riemann-Hilbert problem. In the process, we compute the connection matrix for all smooth solutions, thus completing the computation of the monodromy data. We also give connection formulae relating the asymptotics at zero and infinity of all smooth solutions, clarifying the region of validity of the formulae established earlier by Tracy and Widom. Finally, for the tt*-Toda equations, we resolve some conjectures of Cecotti and Vafa concerning the positivity of S+S^t (where S is the Stokes matrix) and the unimodularity of the eigenvalues of the monodromy matrix.

Normal matrix models, dbar-problem, and orthogonal polynomials on the complex plane

We introduce a dbar-formulation of the orthogonal polynomials on the complex plane, and hence of the related normal matrix model, which is expected to play the same role as the Riemann-Hilbert formalism in the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the line and for the related Hermitian model. We propose an analog of Deift-Kriecherbauer-McLaughlin-Venakides-Zhou asymptotic method for the analysis of the relevant dbar-problem, and indicate how familiar steps for the Hermitian model, e.g. the g-function ``undressing'', might look like in the case of the normal model. We use the particular model considered recently by P. Elbau and G. Felder as a case study.

Random Words, Toeplitz Determinants and Integrable Systems. II

This paper, a continuation of math.CO/9909169, connects the analysis of the length of the longest weakly increasing subsequence of inhomogeneous random words to a Riemann-Hilbert problem and an associated system of integrable PDEs. In particular, we show that the Poissonization of the distribution function of this length can be identified as the Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno tau function.

Random Words, Toeplitz Determinants and Integrable Systems. I

It is proved that the limiting distribution of the length of the longest weakly increasing subsequence in an inhomogeneous random word is related to the distribution function for the eigenvalues of a certain direct sum of Gaussian unitary ensembles subject to an overall constraint that the eigenvalues lie in a hyperplane.

Integrable Fredholm Operators and Dual Isomonodromic Deformations

The Fredholm determinants of a special class of integral operators K supported on the union of m curve segments in the complex plane are shown to be the tau-functions of an isomonodromic family of meromorphic covariant derivative operators D_l. These have regular singular points at the 2m endpoints of the curve segments and a singular point of Poincare index 1 at infinity. The rank r of the vector bundle over the Riemann sphere on which they act equals the number of distinct terms in the exponential sums entering in the numerator of the integral kernels. The deformation equations may be viewed as nonautonomous Hamiltonian systems on an auxiliary symplectic vector space M, whose Poisson quotient, under a parametric family of Hamiltonian group actions, is identified with a Poisson submanifold of the loop algebra Lgl_R(r) with respect to the rational R-matrix structure. The matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem method is used to identify the auxiliary space M with the data defining the integral kernel of the resolvent operator at the endpoints of the curve segments. A second associated isomonodromic family of covariant derivative operators D_z is derived, having rank n=2m, and r finite regular singular points at the values of the exponents defining the kernel of K. This family is similarly embedded into the algebra Lgl_R(n) through a dual parametric family of Poisson quotients of M. The operators D_z are shown to be analogously associated to the integral operator obtained from K through a Fourier-Laplace transform.

Determinant representation for a quantum correlation function of the lattice sine-Gordon model

We consider a completely integrable lattice regularization of the sine-Gordon model with discrete space and continuous time. We derive a determinant representation for a correlation function which in the continuum limit turns into the correlation function of local fields. The determinant is then embedded into a system of integrable integro-differential equations. The leading asymptotic behaviour of the correlation function is described in terms of the solution of a Riemann Hilbert Problem (RHP) related to the system of integro-differential equations. The leading term in the asymptotical decomposition of the solution of the RHP is obtained.

Painlevé Transcendent Describes Quantum Correlation Function of the XXZ Antiferromagnet away from the free-fermion point

We consider quantum correlation functions of the antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg XXZ spin chain in a magnetic field. We show that for a magnetic field close to the critical field $h_c$ (for the critical magnetic field the ground state is ferromagnetic) certain correlation functions can be expressed in terms of the solution of the Painlevé V transcendent. This establishes a relation between solutions of Painlevé differential equations and quantum correlation functions in models of {\sl interacting} fermions. Painlevé transcendents were known to describe correlation functions in models with free fermionic spectra.

Differential equation for a correlation function of the spin-${1\over2}$ Heisenberg chain

We consider the probability to find a string of $x$ adjacent parallel spins in the antiferromagnetic ground state of the model (in a magnetic field). We derive a system of integro-difference equations which define this probability. This system is completely integrable, it has Lax representation and a corresponding Riemann-Hilbert problem. The quantum correlation funtion is a $τ$-function of this system.
