Left-invariant Einstein metrics on $S^3 \times S^3$

The classification of homogeneous compact Einstein manifolds in dimension six is an open problem. We consider the remaining open case, namely left-invariant Einstein metrics $g$ on $G = \mathrm{SU}(2) \times \mathrm{SU}(2) = S^3 \times S^3$. Einstein metrics are critical points of the total scalar curvature functional for fixed volume. The scalar curvature $S$ of a left-invariant metric $g$ is constant and can be expressed as a rational function in the parameters determining the metric. The critical points of $S$, subject to the volume constraint, are given by the zero locus of a system of polynomials in the parameters. In general, however, the determination of the zero locus is apparently out of reach. Instead, we consider the case where the isotropy group $K$ of $g$ in the group of motions is non-trivial. When $K\not\cong \mathbb{Z}_2$ we prove that the Einstein metrics on $G$ are given by (up to homothety) either the standard metric or the nearly Kähler metric, based on representation-theoretic arguments and computer algebra. For the remaining case $K\cong \mathbb{Z}_2$ we present partial results.

Lecture Notes on Mathematical Methods of Classical Physics

These notes grew out of a lecture course on mathematical methods of classical physics for students of mathematics and mathematical physics at the master's level. Also, physicists with a strong interest in mathematics may find this text useful as a resource complementary to existing textbooks on classical physics. Topics include Lagrangian Mechanics, Hamiltonian Mechanics, Hamilton-Jacobi Theory, as well as Classical Field Theory formulated in the language of jet bundles. The latter topic also covers important examples of field theories such as sigma models, gauge theory, and Einstein's theory of general relativity.

Yang-Mills solutions and Spin(7)-instantons on cylinders over coset spaces with $G_2$-structure

We study $\mathfrak{g}$-valued Yang-Mills fields on cylinders $Z(G/H)=\mathbb{R} \times G/H$, where G/H is a compact seven-dimensional coset space with $G_2$-structure, $\mathfrak{g}$ is the Lie algebra of G, and Z(G/H) inherits a Spin(7)-structure. After imposing a general G-invariance condition, Yang-Mills theory with torsion on Z(G/H) reduces to Newtonian mechanics of a point particle moving in $\mathbb{R}^n$ under the influence of some quartic potential and possibly additional constraints. The kinematics and dynamics depends on the chosen coset space. We consider in detail three coset spaces with nearly parallel $G_2$-structure and four coset spaces with SU(3)-structure. For each case, we analyze the critical points of the potential and present a range of finite-energy solutions. We also study a higher-dimensional analog of the instanton equation. Its solutions yield G-invariant Spin(7)-instanton configurations on Z(G/H), which are special cases of Yang-Mills configurations with torsion.

Order $α'$ heterotic domain walls with warped nearly Kähler geometry

We consider 1+3-dimensional domain wall solutions of heterotic supergravity on a six-dimensional warped nearly Kähler manifold $X_6$ in the presence of gravitational and gauge instantons of tanh-kink type as constructed in [arXiv:1109.3552]. We include first order $α'$ corrections to the heterotic supergravity action, which imply a non-trivial Yang-Mills sector and Bianchi identity. We present a variety of solutions, depending on the choice of instantons, for the special case in which the SU(3) structure on $X_6$ satisfies $W_1^-=0$. The solutions preserve two real supercharges, which corresponds to $\mathcal{N}{=}1/2$ supersymmetry from the four-dimensional point of view. Besides serving as a useful framework for collecting existing solutions, the formulation in terms of dynamic SU(3) structures utilized here allows us to obtain new solutions in as yet unexplored corners of the instanton configuration space. Our approach thus offers a unified description of the embedding of tanh-kink-type instantons into half-BPS solutions of heterotic supergravity where the internal six-dimensional manifold has a warped nearly Kähler geometry

Topological Invariants and Fibration Structure of Complete Intersection Calabi-Yau Four-Folds

We investigate the mathematical properties of the class of Calabi-Yau four-folds recently found in [arXiv:1303.1832]. This class consists of 921,497 configuration matrices which correspond to manifolds that are described as complete intersections in products of projective spaces. For each manifold in the list, we compute the full Hodge diamond as well as additional topological invariants such as Chern classes and intersection numbers. Using this data, we conclude that there are at least 36,779 topologically distinct manifolds in our list. We also study the fibration structure of these manifolds and find that 99.95 percent can be described as elliptic fibrations. In total, we find 50,114,908 elliptic fibrations, demonstrating the multitude of ways in which many manifolds are fibered. A sub-class of 26,088,498 fibrations satisfy necessary conditions for admitting sections. The complete data set can be downloaded at http://www-thphys.physics.ox.ac.uk/projects/CalabiYau/Cicy4folds/index.html .

All Complete Intersection Calabi-Yau Four-Folds

We present an exhaustive, constructive, classification of the Calabi-Yau four-folds which can be described as complete intersections in products of projective spaces. A comprehensive list of 921,497 configuration matrices which represent all topologically distinct types of complete intersection Calabi-Yau four-folds is provided and can be downloaded at http://www-thphys.physics.ox.ac.uk/projects/CalabiYau/Cicy4folds/index.html . The manifolds have non-negative Euler characteristics in the range 0 - 2610. This data set will be of use in a wide range of physical and mathematical applications. Nearly all of these four-folds are elliptically fibered and are thus of interest for F-theory model building.

Heterotic string plus five-brane systems with asymptotic AdS3

We present NS1+NS5-brane solutions of heterotic supergravity on curved geometries. They interpolate between a near horizon AdS3 x X^k x T^{7-k} region and R^{1,1} x c(X^k) x T^{7-k}, where X^k (with k = 3,5,6,7) is a k-dimensional geometric Killing spinor manifold, c(X^k) its Ricci-flat cone and T^{7-k} a (7-k)-torus. The solutions require first order alpha'-corrections to the field equations, and special point-like instantons play an important role, whose singular support is a calibrated submanifold wrapped by the NS5-brane. It is also possible to add a gauge anti-5-brane. We determine the super isometries of the near horizon geometry which are supposed to appear as symmetries of the holographically dual two-dimensional conformal field theory.

Chern-Simons flows on Aloff-Wallach spaces and Spin(7)-instantons

Due to their explicit construction, Aloff-Wallach spaces are prominent in flux compactifications. They carry G_2-structures and admit the G_2-instanton equations, which are natural BPS equations for Yang-Mills instantons on seven-manifolds and extremize a Chern-Simons-type functional. We consider the Chern-Simons flow between different G_2-instantons on Aloff-Wallach spaces, which is equivalent to Spin(7)-instantons on a cylinder over them. For a general SU(3)-equivariant gauge connection, the generalized instanton equations turn into gradient-flow equations on C^3 x R^2, with a particular cubic superpotential. For the simplest member of the Aloff-Wallach family (with 3-Sasakian structure) we present an explicit instanton solution of tanh-like shape.

M-theory Calabi-Yau Quantum Mechanics

This thesis explores an exotic class of M-theory compactifications in which the compact manifold is taken to be a Calabi-Yau five-fold. The resulting effective theory is a one-dimensional N=2 super-mechanics model that exhibits peculiar features of one-dimensional supersymmetry, such as the appearance of fermion-only super-multiplets. The latter necessitates reducing also the fermionic sector of M-theory, which is not normally included in the compactification literature and is thus presented, together with the required technology, in detail. The one-dimensional effective theory is most elegantly described in superspace and therefore, a detailed account of one-dimensional flat and curved N=2 superspace is provided. This includes developing the theory of fermionic multiplets and the study of cross-couplings between 2a and 2b multiplets. Another important aspect is the inclusion of flux. We study its consistency conditions, its relation to supersymmetry and the way it gives rise to a potential in the one-dimensional effective action. It is also explained how the supersymmetry-preserving part of the potential can be obtained from a Gukov-type superpotential. The main motivation of this compactification scenario is rooted in the realm of cosmology. Its virtue is a democratic treatment of spatial dimensions. As opposed to the artificial 3+7 split in most string compactifications, the early universe starts out with all spatial dimensions compact and small in our approach. One then seeks for dynamical ways in which three dimensions grow large at late times. Possible realisations of this idea are discussed both at the classical and at the quantum level. Finally, preliminary work on Calabi-Yau five-fold compactifications of F-theory and the resulting two-dimensional string-like actions is presented.

M-theory on Calabi-Yau Five-Folds

We study the compactification of M-theory on Calabi-Yau five-folds and the resulting N=2 super-mechanics theories. By explicit reduction from 11 dimensions, including both bosonic and fermionic terms, we calculate the one-dimensional effective action and show that it can be derived from an N=2 super-space action. We find that the Kahler and complex structure moduli of the five-fold reside in 2a and 2b super-multiplets, respectively. Constrained 2a super-multiplets arise from zero-modes of the M-theory three-form and lead to cross-couplings between 2a and 2b multiplets. Fermionic zero modes which arise from the (1,3) sector of the 11-dimensional gravitino do not have bosonic super-partners and have to be described by purely fermionic super-multiplets in one dimension. We also study the inclusion of flux and discuss the consistency of the scalar potential with one-dimensional N=2 supersymmetry and how it can be described in terms of a superpotential. This superpotential can also be obtained from a Gukov-type formula which we present. Supersymmetric vacua, obtained by solving the F-term equations, always have vanishing vacuum energy due to the form of this scalar potential. We show that such supersymmetric solutions exist for particular examples. Two substantial appendices develop the topology and geometry of Calabi-Yau five-folds and the structure of one-dimensional N=2 supersymmetry and supergravity to the level of generality required for our purposes.
