The geometry of controlled rough paths

We prove that the spaces of controlled (branched) rough paths of arbitrary order form a continuous field of Banach spaces. This structure has many similarities to an (infinite-dimensional) vector bundle and allows to define a topology on the total space, the collection of all controlled path spaces, which turns out to be Polish in the geometric case. The construction is intrinsic and based on a new approximation result for controlled rough paths. This framework turns well-known maps such as the rough integration map and the Itô-Lyons map into continuous (structure preserving) mappings. Moreover, it is compatible with previous constructions of interest in the stability theory for rough integration.

Lie Theory for Asymptotic Symmetries in General Relativity: The BMS Group

We study the Lie group structure of asymptotic symmetry groups in General Relativity from the viewpoint of infinite-dimensional geometry. To this end, we review the geometric definition of asymptotic simplicity and emptiness due to Penrose and the coordinate-wise definition of asymptotic flatness due to Bondi et al. Then we construct the Lie group structure of the Bondi--Metzner--Sachs (BMS) group and discuss its Lie theoretic properties. We find that the BMS group is regular in the sense of Milnor, but not real analytic. This motivates us to conjecture that it is not locally exponential. Finally, we verify the Trotter property as well as the commutator property. As an outlook, we comment on the situation of related asymptotic symmetry groups. In particular, the much more involved situation of the Newman--Unti group is highlighted, which will be studied in future work.

Manifolds of mappings on cartesian products

Given smooth manifolds $M_1,\ldots, M_n$ (which may have a boundary or corners), a smooth manifold $N$ modeled on locally convex spaces and $α\in({\mathbb N}_0\cup\{\infty\})^n$, we consider the set $C^α(M_1\times\cdots\times M_n,N)$ of all mappings $f\colon M_1\times\cdots\times M_n\to N$ which are $C^α$ in the sense of Alzaareer. Such mappings admit, simultaneously, continuous iterated directional derivatives of orders $\leq α_j$ in the $j$th variable for $j\in\{1,\ldots, n\}$, in local charts. We show that $C^α(M_1\times\cdots\times M_n,N)$ admits a canonical smooth manifold structure whenever each $M_j$ is compact and $N$ admits a local addition. The case of non-compact domains is also considered.

Geometric rough paths on infinite dimensional spaces

Similar to ordinary differential equations, rough paths and rough differential equations can be formulated in a Banach space setting. For $α\in (1/3,1/2)$, we give criteria for when we can approximate Banach space-valued weakly geometric $α$-rough paths by signatures of curves of bounded variation, given some tuning of the Hölder parameter. We show that these criteria are satisfied for weakly geometric rough paths on Hilbert spaces. As an application, we obtain Wong-Zakai type result for function space valued martingales using the notion of (unbounded) rough drivers.

Incompressible Euler equations with stochastic forcing: a geometric approach

We consider stochastic versions of Euler--Arnold equations using the infinite-dimensional geometric approach as pioneered by Ebin and Marsden. For the Euler equation on a compact manifold (possibly with smooth boundary) we establish local existence and uniqueness of a strong solution (in the stochastic sense) in spaces of Sobolev mappings (of high enough regularity). Our approach combines techniques from stochastic analysis and infinite-dimensional geometry and provides a novel toolbox to establish local well-posedness of stochastic Euler--Arnold equations.

Continuity of Formal Power Series Products in Nonlinear Control Theory

Formal power series products appear in nonlinear control theory when systems modeled by Chen-Fliess series are interconnected to form new systems. In fields like adaptive control and learning systems, the coefficients of these formal power series are estimated sequentially with real-time data. The main goal of the present article is to prove the continuity and analyticity of such products with respect to several natural (locally convex) topologies on spaces of locally convergent formal power series in order to establish foundational properties behind these technologies. In addition, it is shown that a transformation group central to describing the output feedback connection is in fact an analytic Lie group in this setting with certain regularity properties.

Extending Whitney's extension theorem: nonlinear function spaces

We consider a global, nonlinear version of the Whitney extension problem for manifold-valued smooth functions on closed domains $C$, with non-smooth boundary, in possibly non-compact manifolds. Assuming $C$ is a submanifold with corners, or is compact and locally convex with rough boundary, we prove that the restriction map from everywhere-defined functions is a submersion of locally convex manifolds and so admits local linear splittings on charts. This is achieved by considering the corresponding restriction map for locally convex spaces of compactly-supported sections of vector bundles, allowing the even more general case where $C$ only has mild restrictions on inward and outward cusps, and proving the existence of an extension operator.

Continuity of Chen-Fliess Series for Applications in System Identification and Machine Learning

Model continuity plays an important role in applications like system identification, adaptive control, and machine learning. This paper provides sufficient conditions under which input-output systems represented by locally convergent Chen-Fliess series are jointly continuous with respect to their generating series and as operators mapping a ball in an $L_p$-space to a ball in an $L_q$-space, where $p$ and $q$ are conjugate exponents. The starting point is to introduce a class of topological vector spaces known as Silva spaces to frame the problem and then to employ the concept of a direct limit to describe convergence. The proof of the main continuity result combines elements of proofs for other forms of continuity appearing in the literature to produce the desired conclusion.

The Lie group of vertical bisections of a regular Lie groupoid

In this note we construct an infinite-dimensional Lie group structure on the group of vertical bisections of a regular Lie groupoid. We then identify the Lie algebra of this group and discuss regularity properties (in the sense of Milnor) for these Lie groups. If the groupoid is locally trivial, i.e. a gauge groupoid, the vertical bisections coincide with the gauge group of the underlying bundle. Hence the construction recovers the well known Lie group structure of the gauge groups. To establish the Lie theoretic properties of the vertical bisections of a Lie groupoid over a non-compact base, we need to generalise the Lie theoretic treatment of Lie groups of bisections for Lie groupoids over non-compact bases.

Lie groupoids of mappings taking values in a Lie groupoid

Endowing differentiable functions from a compact manifold to a Lie group with the pointwise group operations one obtains the so-called current groups and, as a special case, loop groups. These are prime examples of infinite-dimensional Lie groups modelled on locally convex spaces. In the present paper, we generalise this construction and show that differentiable mappings on a compact manifold (possibly with boundary) with values in a Lie groupoid form infinite-dimensional Lie groupoids which we call current Lie groupoids. We then study basic differential geometry and Lie theory for these Lie groupoids of mappings. In particular, we show that certain Lie groupoid properties, like being a proper étale Lie groupoid, are inherited by the current groupoid. Furthermore, we identify the Lie algebroid of a current Lie groupoid as a current Lie algebroid (analogous to the current Lie algebra associated to a current Lie group). To establish these results, we study superposition operators given by postcomposition with a fixed function, between manifolds of $C^\ell$-functions. Under natural hypotheses, these operators turn out to be a submersion (an immersion, an embedding, proper, resp., a local diffeomorphism) if so is the underlying map. These results are new in their generality and of independent interest.

Linking Lie groupoid representations and representations of infinite-dimensional Lie groups

The present paper links the representation theory of Lie groupoids and infinite-dimensional Lie groups. We show that smooth representations of Lie groupoids give rise to smooth representations of associated Lie groups. The groups envisaged here are the bisection group and a group of groupoid self maps. Then representations of the Lie groupoids give rise to representations of the infinite-dimensional Lie groups on spaces of (compactly supported) bundle sections. Endowing the spaces of bundle sections with a fine Whitney type topology, the fine very strong topology, we even obtain continuous and smooth representations. It is known that in the topological category, this correspondence can be reversed for certain topological groupoids. We extend this result to the smooth category under weaker assumptions on the groupoids.

Lie groups of controlled characters of combinatorial Hopf algebras

In this article groups of controlled characters of a combinatorial Hopf algebra are considered from the perspective of infinite-dimensional Lie theory. A character is controlled in our sense if it satisfies certain growth bounds, e.g.\ exponential growth. We study these characters for combinatorial Hopf algebras. Following Loday and Ronco, a combinatorial Hopf algebra is a graded and connected Hopf algebra which is a polynomial algebra with an explicit choice of basis (usually identified with combinatorial objects such as trees, graphs, etc.). If the growth bounds and the Hopf algebra are compatible we prove that the controlled characters form infinite-dimensional Lie groups. Further, we identify the Lie algebra and establish regularity results (in the sense of Milnor) for these Lie groups. The general construction principle exhibited here enables to treat a broad class of examples from physics, numerical analysis and control theory. Groups of controlled characters appear in renormalisation of quantum field theories, numerical analysis and control theory in the guise of groups of locally convergent power series. The results presented here, generalise the construction of the (tame) Butcher group, aka the controlled character group of the Butcher-Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra.

Convergence of Lie group integrators

We relate two notions of local error for integration schemes on Riemannian homogeneous spaces, and show how to derive global error estimates from such local bounds. In doing so, we prove for the first time that the Lie-Butcher theory of Lie group integrators leads to global error estimates.

Shape analysis on homogeneous spaces: a generalised SRVT framework

Shape analysis is ubiquitous in problems of pattern and object recognition and has developed considerably in the last decade. The use of shapes is natural in applications where one wants to compare curves independently of their parametrisation. One computationally efficient approach to shape analysis is based on the Square Root Velocity Transform (SRVT). In this paper we propose a generalised SRVT framework for shapes on homogeneous manifolds. The method opens up for a variety of possibilities based on different choices of Lie group action and giving rise to different Riemannian metrics.

Overview of (pro-)Lie group structures on Hopf algebra character groups

Character groups of Hopf algebras appear in a variety of mathematical and physical contexts. To name just a few, they arise in non-commutative geometry, renormalisation of quantum field theory, and numerical analysis. In the present article we review recent results on the structure of character groups of Hopf algebras as infinite-dimensional (pro-)Lie groups. It turns out that under mild assumptions on the Hopf algebra or the target algebra the character groups possess strong structural properties. Moreover, these properties are of interest in applications of these groups outside of Lie theory. We emphasise this point in the context of two main examples: The Butcher group from numerical analysis and character groups which arise from the Connes--Kreimer theory of renormalisation of quantum field theories.

Shape analysis on Lie groups and homogeneous spaces

In this paper we are concerned with the approach to shape analysis based on the so called Square Root Velocity Transform (SRVT). We propose a generalisation of the SRVT from Euclidean spaces to shape spaces of curves on Lie groups and on homogeneous manifolds. The main idea behind our approach is to exploit the geometry of the natural Lie group actions on these spaces.

The geometry of characters of Hopf algebras

Character groups of Hopf algebras appear in a variety of mathematical contexts such as non-commutative geometry, renormalisation of quantum field theory, numerical analysis and the theory of regularity structures for stochastic partial differential equations. In these applications, several species of "series expansions" can then be described as characters from a Hopf algebra to a commutative algebra. Examples include ordinary Taylor series, B-series, Chen-Fliess series from control theory and rough paths. In this note we explain and review the constructions for Lie group and topological structures for character groups. The main novel result of the present article is a Lie group structure for characters of graded and not necessarily connected Hopf algebras (under the assumption that the degree zero subalgebra is finite-dimensional). Further, we establish regularity (in the sense of Milnor) for these Lie groups.

Manifolds of absolutely continuous curves and the square root velocity framework

A classical result in Riemannian geometry states that the absolutely continuous curves into a (finite-dimensional) Riemannian manifold form an infinite-dimensional manifold. In the present paper this construction and related results are generalised to absolutely continuous curves with values in a strong Riemannian manifolds. As an application we consider extensions of the square root velocity transform (SRVT) framework for shape analysis. Computations in this framework frequently lead to curves which leave the shape space (of smooth curves), and are only contained in a completion. In the vector valued case, this extends the SRVT to a space of absolutely continuous curves. We investigate the situation for shape spaces of manifold valued (absolutely continuous) curves.
