A criterion for invariant measures of Itô processes based on the symbol

An integral criterion for the existence of an invariant measure of an Itô process is developed. This new criterion is based on the probabilistic symbol of the Itô process. In contrast to the standard integral criterion for invariant measures of Markov processes based on the generator, no test functions and hence no information on the domain of the generator is needed.

Comparison of time-inhomogeneous Markov processes

Comparison results are given for time-inhomogeneous Markov processes with respect to function classes induced stochastic orderings. The main result states comparison of two processes, provided that the comparability of their infinitesimal generators as well as an invariance property of one process is assumed. The corresponding proof is based on a representation result for the solutions of inhomogeneous evolution problems in Banach spaces, which extends previously known results from the literature. Based on this representation, an ordering result for Markov processes induced by bounded and unbounded function classes is established. We give various applications to time-inhomogeneous diffusions, to processes with independent increments and to Lévy driven diffusion processes.

Testing for Structural Breaks via Ordinal Pattern Dependence

We propose new concepts in order to analyze and model the dependence structure between two time series. Our methods rely exclusively on the order structure of the data points. Hence, the methods are stable under monotone transformations of the time series and robust against small perturbations or measurement errors. Ordinal pattern dependence can be characterized by four parameters. We propose estimators for these parameters, and we calculate their asymptotic distributions. Furthermore, we derive a test for structural breaks within the dependence structure. All results are supplemented by simulation studies and empirical examples. For three consecutive data points attaining different values, there are six possibilities how their values can be ordered. These possibilities are called ordinal patterns. Our first idea is simply to count the number of coincidences of patterns in both time series, and to compare this with the expected number in the case of independence. If we detect a lot of coincident patterns, this means that the up-and-down behavior is similar. Hence, our concept can be seen as a way to measure non-linear `correlation'. We show in the last section, how to generalize the concept in order to capture various other kinds of dependence.

Generalization of the Blumenthal-Getoor index to the class of homogeneous diffusions with jumps and some applications

We introduce the probabilistic symbol for the class of homogeneous diffusions with jumps (in the sense of Jacod/Shiryaev). This concept generalizes the well-known characteristic exponent of a Lévy process. Using the symbol, we introduce eight indices which generalize the Blumenthal-Getoor index $β$ and the Pruitt index $δ$. These indices are used afterwards to obtain growth and Hölder conditions of the process. In the future, the technical main results will be used to derive further fine properties. Since virtually all examples of homogeneous diffusions in the literature are Markovian, we construct a process which does not have this property.

COGARCH: Symbol, Generator and Characteristics

We describe the technique how to use the symbol in order to calculate the generator and the characteristics of an Itô process. As an example we analyze the COGARCH process which is used to model financial data.

On Deterministic Markov Processes: Expandability and Related Topics

We treat the class of universal Markov processes on the d-dimensional Euklidean space which do not depend on random. For these, as well as for several subclasses, we prove criteria whether a function f, defined on the positive half-line, can be a path of a process in the respective class. This is useful in particular in the construction of (counter-)examples. Furthermore we characterize the processes of this kind, which are homogeneous in space and time. The semimartingale property is characterized in terms of the jumps of a one-dimensional deterministic Markov process. We emphasize the differences between the time homogeneous and the time inhomogeneous case and we show that a deterministic Markov process is in general more complicated than a Hunt process plus 'jump structure'.

SDEs Driven by SDE Solutions

We consider stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by Feller processes which are themselves solutions of multivariate Levy driven SDEs. The solutions of these 'iterated SDEs' are shown to be non-Markovian. However, the process consisting of the driving process and the solution is Markov and even Feller in the case of bounded coefficients. The generator as well as the semimartingale characteristics of this process are calculated explicitly and fine properties of the solution are derived via the stochastic symbol. A short simulation study and an outlook in the direction of stochastic modeling round out the paper.

On the Semimartingale Nature of Feller Processes with Killing

Let U be an open set in R^d. We show that under a mild assumption on the richness of the generator a Feller process in U with (predictable) killing is a semimartingale. To this end we generalize the notion of semimartingales in a natural way to those 'with killing'. Furthermore we calculate the semimartingale characteristics of the Feller process explicitly and analyze their connections to the symbol. Finally we derive a probabilistic formula to calculate the symbol of the process directly.

Well-balanced Levy Driven Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Processes

In this paper we introduce the well-balanced Lévy driven Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process as a moving average process of the form $X_t=\int \exp(-λ|t-u|)dL_u$. In contrast to Lévy driven Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes the well-balanced form possesses continuous sample paths and an autocorrelation function which is decreasing not purely exponential but of the order $λ|u|\exp(-λ|u|)$. Furthermore, depending on the size of $λ$ it allows both for positive and negative correlation of increments. We indicate how the well-balanced Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process might be used as mean or volatility process in stochastic volatility models.

The Symbol Associated with the Solution of a Stochastic Differential Equation

We consider a stochastic differential equations which is driven by a Levy process. It turns out that the solution process is a Feller process if the coefficient of the SDE is bounded. Using a probabilistic formula we calculate the symbol, which appears in the Fourier representation of the generator, explicitely. Using the symbol we introduce indices which are generalizations of the well known Blumenthal-Getoor index. These indices are then used to obtain some fine properties of the solution process.

A Classification of Deterministic Hunt Processes with Some Applications

Deterministic processes form an important building block of several classes of processes. We provide a method to classify deterministic Hunt processes. Within this framework we characterize different subclasses (e.g. Feller) and construct some (counter-)examples. In particular the existence of a Hunt semimartingale (on R) which is not an Itô process in the sense of Cinlar, Jacod, Protter and Sharpe (1980) is proven.

The Euler scheme for Feller processes

We consider the Euler scheme for stochastic differential equations with jumps, whose intensity might be infinite and the jump structure may depend on the position. This general type of SDE is explicitly given for Feller processes and a general convergence condition is presented. In particular the characteristic functions of the increments of the Euler scheme are calculated in terms of the symbol of the Feller process in a closed form. These increments are increments of Lévy processes and thus the Euler scheme can be used for simulation by applying standard techniques from Lévy processes.
