Probing Cosmic Expansion and Early Universe with Einstein Telescope

Over the next two decades, gravitational-wave (GW) observations are expected to evolve from a discovery-driven endeavour into a precision tool for astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. Current second-generation ground-based detectors have established the existence of compact-binary mergers and enabled GW multi-messenger astronomy, but they remain limited in sensitivity, redshift reach, frequency coverage, and duty cycle. These limitations prevent them from addressing many fundamental open questions in cosmology. By the 2040s, wide-field electromagnetic surveys will have mapped the luminous Universe with unprecedented depth and accuracy. Nevertheless, key problems including the nature of dark matter, the physical origin of cosmic acceleration, the properties of gravity on cosmological scales, and the physical conditions of the earliest moments after the Big Bang will remain only partially constrained by electromagnetic observations alone. Progress on these fronts requires access to physical processes and epochs that do not emit light. Gravitational waves provide a unique and complementary observational channel: they propagate over cosmological distances largely unaffected by intervening matter, probe extreme astrophysical environments, and respond directly to the geometry of spacetime. In this context, next-generation GW observatories such as the Einstein Telescope (ET) will be transformative for European astronomy. Operating at sensitivities and frequencies beyond existing detectors, ET will observe binary black holes and neutron stars out to previously inaccessible redshifts, enable continuous high signal-to-noise monitoring of compact sources, and detect gravitational-wave backgrounds of astrophysical and cosmological origin. Together with space-based detectors, ET will play a central role in advancing our understanding of cosmic evolution and fundamental physics.

Axionic domain walls at Pulsar Timing Arrays: QCD bias and particle friction

The recent results from the Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) collaborations show the first evidence for the detection of a stochastic background of gravitational waves at the nHz frequencies. This discovery has profound implications for the physics of both the late and the early Universe. In fact, together with the possible interpretation in terms of super massive black hole binaries, many sources in the early Universe can provide viable explanations as well. In this paper, we study the gravitational wave background sourced by a network of axion-like-particle (ALP) domain walls at temperatures around the QCD crossover, where the QCD-induced potential provides the necessary bias to annihilate the network. Remarkably, this implies a peak amplitude at frequencies around the sensitivity range of PTAs. We extend previous analysis by taking into account the unavoidable friction on the network stemming from the topological coupling of the ALP to QCD in terms of gluon and pion reflection off the domain walls at high and low temperatures, respectively. We identify the regions of parameter space where the network annihilates in the scaling regime ensuring compatibility with the PTA results, as well as those where friction can be important and a more detailed study around the QCD crossover is required.

Unifying Approaches to Chiral Bosons

Chiral bosons, or self-dual p-form fields, are ubiquitous in string theoretic contexts but are challenging to treat. Lagrangian constructions invariably introduce a complexity be it auxiliary fields or sacrificing Lorentz invariance. In this note we show how to pass between such different approaches to chiral bosons starting from a Chern Simons point of view to recover formulations of Pasti, Sorokin and Tonin and of Mkrtchyan. This leads to a novel generalisation of the latter to include non-Abelian chiral bosons in 2-dimensions, and generalisations to include twisted self-duality which are relevant in T-duality symmetric approaches to string theory. Our approach also shows how global affine symmetries of two- and higher-dimensional chiral bosons emerge from broken Chern-Simons gauge transformations on the boundary.

Friction on ALP domain walls and gravitational waves

We study the early Universe evolution of axion-like particle (ALP) domain walls taking into account the effect of friction from particles in the surrounding plasma, including the case of particles in thermal equilibrium and frozen out species. We characterize the friction force from interactions within the ALP effective theory, providing new results for the fermion contribution as well as identifying simple conditions for friction to be relevant during the domain wall life time. When friction dominates, the domain wall network departs from the standard scaling regime and the corresponding gravitational wave emission is affected. As a relevant example, we show how this can be the case for ALP domain walls emitting at the typical frequencies of Pulsar Timing Array experiments, when the ALP couples to the SM leptons. We then move to a general exploration of the gravitational wave prospects in the ALP parameter space. We finally illustrate how the gravitational wave signal from ALP domain walls is correlated with the quality of the underlying $U(1)$ symmetry.

Probing Early Universe Supercooled Phase Transitions with Gravitational Wave Data

We investigate the reach of the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA detectors in the search for signatures of first-order phase transitions in the early Universe. Utilising data from the first three observing runs, we derive constraints on the parameters of the underlying gravitational-wave background, focusing on transitions characterised by strong supercooling. As an application of our analysis, we determine bounds on the parameter space of two representative particle physics models. We also comment on the expected reach of third-generation detectors in probing supercooled phase transitions.

Doubled space and extended supersymmetry

The doubled formulation of the worldsheet provides a description of string theory in which T-duality is promoted to a manifest symmetry. Here we extend this approach to $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ superspace providing a doubled formulation for bi-Hermitian/generalised K\"ahler target spaces. The theory is described by a single function, a doubled-generalised K\"ahler potential, supplemented with a manifestly $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ constraint. Several examples serve to illustrate this construction, including a discussion of the $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ description of T-folds.

Detection of Early-Universe Gravitational Wave Signatures and Fundamental Physics

Detection of a gravitational-wave signal of non-astrophysical origin would be a landmark discovery, potentially providing a significant clue to some of our most basic, big-picture scientific questions about the Universe. In this white paper, we survey the leading early-Universe mechanisms that may produce a detectable signal -- including inflation, phase transitions, topological defects, as well as primordial black holes -- and highlight the connections to fundamental physics. We review the complementarity with collider searches for new physics, and multimessenger probes of the large-scale structure of the Universe.

Baryogenesis via relativistic bubble expansion

We present a novel baryogenesis mechanism in which the asymmetry is sourced from heavy particles which either gain their mass or are created during bubble expansion in a strong first order phase transition. These particles then decay in a CP and baryon number violating way inside the bubble. The particles are inherently out-of-equilibrium and sufficiently dilute after wall crossing so the third Sakharov condition is easily met. Washout is avoided provided the reheat temperature is sufficiently below the scale of the heavy particles. The mechanism relies on moderate supercooling and relativistic walls which -- in contrast to electroweak baryogenesis -- generically leads to a sizable gravitational wave signal, although in the simplest realisations at frequencies beyond upcoming detectors. We present a simple example model and discuss the restrictions on the parameter space for the mechanism to be successful. We find that high reheat temperatures $T_{\rm RH} \gtrsim 10^{10}$ GeV are generally preferred, whereas stronger supercooling allows for temperatures as low as $T_{\rm RH} \sim 10^{6}$ GeV, provided the vacuum energy density is sufficiently suppressed. We briefly comment on using resonantly enhanced CP violation to achieve even lower scales.

Integrable asymmetric $\lambda$-deformations

We construct integrable deformations of the $\lambda$-type for asymmetrically gauged WZW models. This is achieved by a modification of the Sfetsos gauging procedure to account for a possible automorphism that is allowed in $G/G$ models. We verify classical integrability, derive the one-loop beta function for the deformation parameter and give the construction of integrable D-brane configurations in these models. As an application, we detail the case of the $\lambda$-deformation of the cigar geometry corresponding to the axial gauged $SL(2,R)/U(1)$ theory at large $k$. Here we also exhibit a range of both A-type and B-type integrability preserving D-brane configurations.

D-branes in $\lambda$-deformations

We show that the geometric interpretation of D-branes in WZW models as twisted conjugacy classes persists in the $\lambda$--deformed theory. We obtain such configurations by demanding that a monodromy matrix constructed from the Lax connection of the $\lambda$--deformed theory continues to produce conserved charges in the presence of boundaries. In this way the D-brane configurations obtained correspond to `integrable' boundary configurations. We illustrate this with examples based on $SU(2)$ and $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$, and comment on the relation of these D-branes to both non-Abelian T-duality and Poisson-Lie T-duality. We show that the D2 supported by D0 charge in the $\lambda$--deformed theory map, under analytic continuation together with Poisson-Lie T-duality, to D3 branes in the $\eta$-deformation of the principal chiral model.

Generalized Kahler structures on group manifolds and T-duality

We study generalized Kahler structures on N = (2, 2) supersymmetric Wess-Zumino-Witten models; we use the well known case of SU(2) x U(1) as a toy model and develop tools that allow us to construct the superspace action and uncover the highly nontrivial structure of the hitherto unexplored case of SU(3); these tools should be useful for studying many other examples. We find that different generalized Kahler structures on N = (2, 2) supersymmetric Wess-Zumino-Witten models can be found by T-duality transformations along affine isometries.

Classical and Quantum Aspects of Yang-Baxter Wess-Zumino Models

We investigate the integrable Yang-Baxter deformation of the 2d Principal Chiral Model with a Wess-Zumino term. For arbitrary groups, the one-loop beta functions are calculated and display a surprising connection between classical and quantum physics: the classical integrability condition is necessary to prevent new couplings being generated by renormalisation. We show these theories admit an elegant realisation of Poisson-Lie T-duality acting as a simple inversion of coupling constants. The self-dual point corresponds to the Wess-Zumino-Witten model and is the IR fixed point under RG. We address the possibility of having supersymmetric extensions of these models showing that extended supersymmetry is not possible in general.

Aspects of the Doubled Worldsheet

We clarify the relation between various approaches to the manifestly T-duality symmetric string. We explain in detail how the PST covariant doubled string arises from an unusual gauge fixing. We pay careful attention to the role of "spectator" fields in this process and also show how the T-duality invariant doubled dilaton emerges naturally. We extend these ideas to non-Abelian T-duality and show they give rise to the duality invariant formalism based on the semi-Abelian Drinfeld Double. We then develop the N=(0,1) supersymmetric duality invariant formalism.

Yang-Mills as massive Chern-Simons theory: a third way to three-dimensional gauge theories

The Yang-Mills (YM) equation in three spacetime dimensions (3D) can be modified to include a novel parity-preserving interaction term, with inverse mass parameter, in addition to a possible topological mass term. The novelty is that the modified YM equation is not the Euler-Lagrange equation of any gauge-invariant local action for the YM gauge potential alone. Instead, consistency is achieved in the "third way" exploited by 3D "minimal massive gravity". We relate our results to the "novel Higgs mechanism" for Chern-Simons gauge theories.

A Note on Supersymmetric Chiral Bosons

In this note we extend the Pasti-Sorokin-Tonin formalism for chiral bosons in two dimensions to $N=(1,1)$ and $N=(2,2)$ superspace. In the latter case the formalism is developed for chiral, twisted chiral and semi-chiral superfields.

The generalized Kaehler geometry of N=(2,2) WZW-models

N=(2,2), d=2 supersymmetric non-linear sigma-models provide a physical realization of Hitchin's and Gualtieri's generalized Kaehler geometry. A large subclass of such models are comprised by WZW-models on even-dimensional reductive group manifolds. In the present paper we analyze the complex structures, type changing, the superfield content and the affine isometries compatible with the extra supersymmetry. The results are illustrated by an exhaustive discussion of the N=(2,2) WZW-models on S3xS1 and S3xS3 where various aspects of generalized Kaehler and Calabi-Yau geometry are verified and clarified. The examples illustrate a slightly weaker definition for an N=(2,2) superconformal generalized Kaehler geometry compared to that for a generalized Calabi-Yau geometry.

An N=2 worldsheet approach to D-branes in bihermitian geometries: II. The general case

We complete the investigation of N=(2,2) supersymmetric nonlinear sigma-models in the presence of a boundary. We study the full bihermitian geometry parameterized by chiral, twisted chiral and semi-chiral superfields and identify the D-brane configurations preserving an N=2 worldsheet supersymmetry. Combining twisted with semi-chiral superfields leads to a clearly defined notion of lagrangian and coisotropic branes generalizing lagrangian and coisotropic A-branes on Kahler manifolds to manifolds which are not necessarily Kahler (but still bihermitian). Adding chiral fields complicates the picture and results in hybrid configurations interpolating between lagrangian/coisotropic branes and branes wrapping around a holomorphic cycle. Even here the branes can be viewed as coisotropic submanifolds albeit in a generalized sense. All supersymmetric D-brane configurations are characterized in the context of generalized complex geometry. Duality transformations interchanging the various types of superfields while preserving all supersymmetries are explicitly constructed and provide for a powerful technique to construct various highly non-trivial D-brane configurations. Several explicit examples are given.
