Geometric effects of noise on Cooper pair pumping

Several works investigated the connection between Cooper pair pumping and the geometric and topological properties of the pumping cycle in the parameters space. Recently the predicted connection between Berry's phase and pumped charge was observed experimentally. In the present work we analyze the effects of noise on Cooper pair pumping. We show that dissipation induces a new geometric contribution in the transferred charge and we propose an experiment where the theory can be probed.

Towards a dephasing diode: asymmetric and geometric dephasing

We study the effect of a noisy environment on spin and charge transport in ballistic quantum wires with spin-orbit coupling (Rashba coupling). We find that the wire then acts as a ``dephasing diode'', inducing very different dephasing of the spins of right and left movers. We also show how Berry phase (geometric phase) in a curved wire can induce such asymmetric dephasing, in addition to purely geometric dephasing. We propose ways to measure these effects through spin detectors, spin-echo techniques, and Aharanov-Bohm interferometry.

Single-qubit lasing and cooling at the Rabi frequency

For a superconducting qubit driven to perform Rabi oscillations and coupled to a slow electromagnetic or nano-mechanical oscillator we describe previously unexplored quantum optics effects. When the Rabi frequency is tuned to resonance with the oscillator the latter can be driven far from equilibrium. Blue detuned driving leads to a population inversion in the qubit and a bi-stability with lasing behavior of the oscillator; for red detuning the qubit cools the oscillator. This behavior persists at the symmetry point where the qubit-oscillator coupling is quadratic and decoherence effects are minimized. There the system realizes a "single-atom-two-photon laser".

Photon-Number Squeezing in Circuit Quantum Electrodynamics

A superconducting single-electron transistor (SSET) coupled to an anharmonic oscillator, e.g., a Josephson junction-L-C circuit, can drive the latter to a nonequilibrium photon number state. By biasing the SSET in a regime where the current is carried by a combination of inelastic quasiparticle tunneling and coherent Cooper-pair tunneling (Josephson quasiparticle cycle), cooling of the oscillator as well as a laser like enhancement of the photon number can be achieved. Here we show, that the cut-off in the quasiparticle tunneling rate due to the superconducting gap, in combination with the anharmonicity of the oscillator, may create strongly squeezed photon number distributions. For low dissipation in the oscillator nearly pure Fock states can be produced.

Geometric phases in semiconductor spin qubits: Manipulations and decoherence

We describe the effect of geometric phases induced by either classical or quantum electric fields acting on single electron spins in quantum dots in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. On one hand, applied electric fields can be used to control the geometric phases, which allows performing quantum coherent spin manipulations without using high-frequency magnetic fields. On the other hand, fluctuating fields induce random geometric phases that lead to spin relaxation and dephasing, thus limiting the use of such spins as qubits. We estimate the decay rates due to piezoelectric phonons and conduction electrons in the circuit, both representing dominant electric noise sources with characteristically differing power spectra.

Stability of longitudinal coupling for Josephson charge qubits

For inductively coupled superconducting quantum bits, we determine the conditions when the coupling commutes with the single-qubit terms. We show that in certain parameter regimes such longitudinal coupling can be stabilized with respect to variations of the circuit parameters. In addition, we analyze its stability against fluctuations of the control fields.

Spin dephasing due to a random Berry phase

We investigate relaxation and dephasing of an electron spin confined in a semiconductor quantum dot and subject to spin-orbit coupling. Even in vanishing magnetic field, B = 0, slow noise coupling to the electron's orbital degree of freedom leads to dephasing of the spin due to a random, in general non-Abelian Berry phase acquired by the spin. For illustration we first present a simple quasiclassical description, then consider a model with 2 orbital states only, and finally present a perturbative quantum treatment appropriate for an electron in a realistic (roughly parabolic, not too strongly confining) quantum dot. We further compare the effect of different sources of noise. While at large magnetic fields phonons dominate the relaxation processes, at low fields electron-hole excitations and possibly 1/f noise may dominate.

Spin-density induced by electromagnetic wave in two-dimensional electron gas

We consider the magnetic response of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with a spin-orbit interaction to a long-wave-length electromagnetic excitation. We observe that the transverse electric field creates spin polarization perpendicular to the 2DEG plane. The effect is more prominent in clean systems with resolved spin-orbit-split subbands, and reaches maximum when the frequency of the wave matches the subband splitting at the Fermi momentum. The relation of this effect to the spin-Hall effect is discussed.

Reading-out the state of a flux qubit by Josephson transmission line solitons

We describe the read-out process of the state of a Josephson flux qubit via solitons in Josephson transmission lines (JTL) as they are in use in the standard rapid single flux quantum (RSFQ) technology. We consider the situation where the information about the state of the qubit is stored in the time delay of the soliton. We analyze dissipative underdamped JTLs, take into account their jitter, and provide estimates of the measuring time and efficiency of the measurement for relevant experimental parameters.

Geometrical spin dephasing in quantum dots

We study spin-orbit mediated relaxation and dephasing of electron spins in quantum dots. We show that higher order contributions provide a relaxation mechanism that dominates for low magnetic fields and is of geometrical origin. In the low-field limit relaxation is dominated by coupling to electron-hole excitations and possibly $1/f$ noise rather than phonons.

Tunable coupling of qubits: nonadiabatic corrections

We analyze the coupling of qubits mediated by a tunable and fast element beyond the adiabatic approximation. The nonadiabatic corrections are important and even dominant in parts of the relevant parameter range. As an example, we consider the tunable capacitive coupling between two charge qubits mediated by a gated Josephson junction, as suggested by Averin and Bruder. The nonadiabatic, inductive contribution persists when the capacitive coupling is tuned to zero. On the other hand, the total coupling can be turned off (in the rotating wave approximation) if the qubits are operated at symmetry points.

Decoherence from ensembles of two-level fluctuators

1/f noise, the major source of dephasing in Josephson qubits, may be produced by an ensemble of two-level systems. Depending on the statistical properties of their distribution, the noise distribution can be Gaussian or non-Gaussian. The latter situation is realized, for instance, when the distribution of coupling strengths has a slowly decaying power-law tail. In this regime questions of self-averaging and sample-to-sample fluctuations become crucial. We study the dephasing process for a class of distribution functions and analyze the self-averaging properties of the results.

Spin and Spin-Wave Dynamics in Josephson Junctions

We extend the Keldysh formulation to quantum spin systems and derive exact equations of motion. This allows us to explore the dynamics of single spins and of ferromagnets when these are inserted between superconducting leads. Several new effects are reported. Chief amongst these are nutations of single S=1/2 spins in Josephson junctions. These nutations are triggered by the superconducting pairing correlations in the leads. Similarly, we find that on rather universal grounds, magnets display unconventional spin wave dynamics when placed in Josephson junctions. These lead to modifications in the tunneling current.

Geometric nature of the environment-induced Berry phase and geometric dephasing

We investigate the geometric phase or Berry phase (BP) acquired by a spin-half which is both subject to a slowly varying magnetic field and weakly-coupled to a dissipative environment (either quantum or classical). We study how this phase is modified by the environment and find that the modification is of a geometric nature. While the original BP (for an isolated system) is the flux of a monopole-field through the loop traversed by the magnetic field, the environment-induced modification of the BP is the flux of a quadrupole-like field. We find that the environment-induced phase is complex, and its imaginary part is a geometric contribution to dephasing. Its sign depends on the direction of the loop. Unlike the BP, this geometric dephasing is gauge invariant for open paths of the magnetic field.

Low- and high-frequency noise from coherent two-level systems

Recent experiments indicate a connection between the low- and high-frequency noise affecting superconducting quantum systems. We explore the possibilities that both noises can be produced by one ensemble of microscopic modes, made up, e.g., by sufficiently coherent two-level systems (TLS). This implies a relation between the noise power in different frequency domains, which depends on the distribution of the parameters of the TLSs. We show that a distribution, natural for tunneling TLSs, with a log-uniform distribution in the tunnel splitting and linear distribution in the bias, accounts for experimental observations.

Cavity QED in superconducting circuits: susceptibility at elevated temperatures

We study the properties of superconducting electrical circuits, realizing cavity QED. In particular we explore the limit of strong coupling, low dissipation, and elevated temperatures relevant for current and future experiments. We concentrate on the cavity susceptibility as it can be directly experimentally addressed, i.e., as the impedance or the reflection coefficient of the cavity. To this end we investigate the dissipative Jaynes-Cummings model in the strong coupling regime at high temperatures. The dynamics is investigated within the Bloch-Redfield formalism. At low temperatures, when only the few lowest levels are occupied the susceptibility can be presented as a sum of contributions from independent level-to-level transitions. This corresponds to the secular (random phase) approximation in the Bloch-Redfield formalism. At temperatures comparable to and higher than the oscillator frequency, many transitions become important and a multiple-peak structure appears. We show that in this regime the secular approximation breaks down, as soon as the peaks start to overlap. In other words, the susceptibility is no longer a sum of contributions from independent transitions. We treat the dynamics of the system numerically by exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian of the qubit plus up to 200 states of the oscillator. We compare the results obtained with and without the secular approximation and find a qualitative discrepancy already at moderate temperatures.

Berry phase with environment: classical versus quantum

We discuss the concept of the Berry phase in a dissipative system. We show that one can identify a Berry phase in a weakly-dissipative system and find the respective correction to this quantity, induced by the environment. This correction is expressed in terms of the symmetrized noise power and is therefore insensitive to the nature of the noise representing the environment, namely whether it is classical or quantum mechanical. It is only the spectrum of the noise which counts. We analyze a model of a spin-half (qubit) anisotropically coupled to its environment and explicitly show the coincidence between the effect of a quantum environment and a classical one.

Novel Spin Dynamics in a Josephson Junction

We address the dynamics of a single spin embedded in the tunneling barrier between two superconductors. As a consequence of pair correlations in the superconducting state, the spin displays a rich and unusual dynamics. To properly describe the time evolution of the spin we find the generalized Wess-Zumino-Witten-Novikov term in the effective action for the spin on the Keldysh contour. The superconducting correlations lead to an effective spin action which is non-local in time leading to unconventional precessions. Our predictions might be directly tested for macroscopic spin clusters.
