On the lower bound of the spectral norm of symmetric random matrices with independent entries

We show that the spectral radius of an $N\times N$ random symmetric matrix with i.i.d. bounded centered but non-symmetrically distributed entries is bounded from below by $ 2 \*σ- o(N^{-6/11+ε}), $ where $σ^2 $ is the variance of the matrix entries and $ε$ is an arbitrary small positive number. Combining with our previous result from [7], this proves that for any $ε>0, $ one has $$ \|A_N\| =2 \*σ+ o(N^{-6/11+ε}) $$ with probability going to 1 as $N \to \infty. $

Wigner random matrices with non-symmetrically distributed entries

We show that the spectral radius of an $N\times N$ random symmetric matrix with i.i.d. bounded centered but non-symmetrically distributed entries is bounded from above by $ 2 \*σ+ o(N^{-6/11+ε}), $ where $σ^2 $ is the variance of the matrix entries and $ε$ is an arbitrary small positive number. Our bound improves the earlier results by Z.Füredi and J.Komlós (1981), and the recent bound obtained by Van Vu (2005).

On the Largest Singular Values of Random Matrices with Independent Cauchy Entries

We apply the method of determinants to study the distribution of the largest singular values of large $ m \times n $ real rectangular random matrices with independent Cauchy entries. We show that statistical properties of the (rescaled by a factor of $ \frac{1}{m^2\*n^2}$)largest singular values agree in the limit with the statistics of the inhomogeneous Poisson random point process with the intensity $ \frac{1}π x^{-3/2} $ and, therefore, are different from the Tracy-Widom law. Among other corollaries of our method we show an interesting connection between the mathematical expectations of the determinants of complex rectangular $ m \times n $ standard Wishart ensemble and real rectangular $ 2m \times 2n $ standard Wishart ensemble.

Janossy Densities of Coupled Random Matrices

We explicitly calculate Janossy densities for a special class of finite determinantal point processes with several types of particles introduced by Prähofer and Spohn and, in the full generality, by Johansson in connection with the analysis of polynuclear growth models. The results of our paper generalize the theorem we proved earlier with Borodin about the Janossy densities in biorthogonal ensembles. In particular, our results can be applied to coupled random matrices.

Janossy Densities I. Determinantal Ensembles

We derive an elementary formula for Janossy densities for determinantal point processes with a finite rank projection-type kernel. In particular, for beta=2 polynomial ensembles of random matrices we show that the Janossy densities on an interval I can be expressed in terms of the Christoffel-Darboux kernel for the orthogonal polynomials on the complement of I.

Janossy Densities II. Pfaffian Ensembles

We extend the main result of the companion paper math-ph/0212063 "Janossy Densities I. Determinantal Ensembles" (joint with Alexei Borodin) to the case of the pfaffian ensembles.

On the Largest Eigenvalue of a Random Subgraph of the Hypercube

Let G be a random subgraph of the n-cube where each edge appears randomly and independently with probability p. We prove that the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of G is almost surely λ_1(G)= (1+o(1)) max(Δ^{1/2}(G),np), where Δ(G) is the maximum degree of G and o(1) term tends to zero as max (Δ^{1/2}(G), np) tends to infinity.

Universality at the edge of the spectrum in Wigner random matrices

We prove universality at the edge for rescaled correlation functions of Wigner random matrices in the limit $n\to +\infty$. As a corollary, we show that, after proper rescaling, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. eigenvalues of Wigner random hermitian (resp. real symmetric) matrix weakly converge to the distributions established by Tracy and Widom in G.U.E. (G.O.E.) cases.

On the largest eigenvalue of a sparse random subgraph of the hypercube

We consider a sparse random subraph of the $n$-cube where each edge appears independently with small probability $p(n) =O(n^{-1+o(1)})$. In the most interesting regime when $p(n)$ is not exponentially small we prove that the largest eigenvalue of the graph is asymtotically equal to the square root of the maximum degree.

A note on universality of the distribution of the largest eigenvalues in certain sample covariance matrices

Recently Johansson and Johnstone proved that the distribution of the (properly rescaled) largest principal component of the complex (real) Wishart matrix $ X^* \* X (X^t \*X) $ converges to the Tracy-Widom law as $ n, p $ (the dimensions of $ X $) tend to $ \infty $ in some ratio $ n/p \to γ>0. $ We extend these results in two directions. First of all, we prove that the joint distribution of the first, second, third, etc. eigenvalues of a Wishart matrix converges (after a proper rescaling) to the Tracy-Widom distribution. Second of all, we explain how the combinatorial machinery developed for Wigner matrices allows to extend the results by Johansson and Johnstone to the case of $ X $ with non-Gaussian entries, provided $ n-p =O(p^{1/3}) . $ We also prove that $ λ_{max} \leq (n^{1/2}+p^{1/2})^2 +O(p^{1/2}\*\log(p)) $ (a.e.) for general $ γ>0.$

Determinantal random point fields

The paper contains an exposition of recent as well as old enough results on determinantal random point fields. We start with some general theorems including the proofs of the necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the determinantal random point field with Hermitian kernel and a criterion for the weak convergence of its distribution. In the second section we proceed with the examples of the determinantal random point fields from Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics, Random Matrix Theory, Probability Theory, Representation Theory and Ergodic Theory. In connection with the Theory of Renewal Processes we characterize all determinantal random point fields in R^1 and Z^1 with independent identically distributed spacings. In the third section we study the translation invariant determinantal random point fields and prove the mixing property of any multiplicity and the absolute continuity of the spectra. In the fourth (and the last) section we discuss the proofs of the Central Limit Theorem for the number of particles in the growing box and the Functional Central Limit Theorem for the empirical distribution function of spacings.
