The Ponderomotive Effects of Narrow-band, Superconducting Resonators in Open and Closed Loop

In this work, we present measurements of ponderomotive instabilities in narrow-band, coaxial resonators in open and closed control loop systems. We show an analytical scheme we will use in future studies to examine the dependency of open loop stability on mechanical parameters. Analytical and simulation models are used to predict the onset of the oscillatory instability in half wave resonators with active disturbance rejection control for amplitude and phase stabilization. We demonstrate that for high amplitude controller bandwidths, ponderomotive oscillations can couple with the controller frequency response via higher harmonics and lower the threshold for the oscillatory instability. We reaffirm the superiority of in-phase/quadrature $(I/Q)$ component control in regards to preventing the oscillatory instability, and show how the phase controller can amplify the crosstalk of disturbances in amplitude and phase control. In cases with large disturbances, this effect can lead to instabilities not present in $I/Q$ control.

Analysis of Mission Opportunities to Sedna in 2029-2034

The article focuses on trajectory design to the trans-Neptunian object (90377) Sedna for launch in 2029-2034. Sedna is currently moving to the perihelion at a distance of around 74 au from the Sun. The perihelion passage is estimated to be in 2073-74. That opens up of opportunities to study such a distant object. Known for its orbit and 10 thousand year period, Sedna is an exciting object for deep space exploration. The current research provides two possible scenarios of transfer to Sedna. A direct flight and flights including gravity assist manoeuvres are considered. The present study showed that a direct flight would be practically unrealistic due to the high total characteristic velocity and the time of flight value. Promising scenarios include gravity assist manoeuvres near Venus, Earth, Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune. The analysis of the close approach to asteroids during the flight to Sedna had been performed. Results of the research presented in this article show that the launch in 2029 provides the best transfer conditions in terms of minimum total characteristic velocity. The analysis shows that with a small additional impulses flybys of the large main-belt asteroids (16) Psyche for launch in 2034 and (20) Massalia for launch in 2029 are possible.

Dark Current and Radiation Shielding Studies For The ILC Main Linac

Electrons of dark current (DC), generated in high-gradient superconducting RF cavities (SRF) due to field emission, can be accelerated up to very high energies-19 GeV in the case of the International Linear Collider (ILC) main linac-before they are removed by focusing and steering magnets. Electromagnetic and hadron showers generated by such electrons can represent a significant radiation threat to the linac equipment and personnel. In our study, an operational scenario is analysed which is believed can be considered as the worst case scenario for the main linac regarding the DC contribution to the radiation environment in the main linac tunnel. A detailed modeling is performed for the DC electrons which are emitted from the surface of the SRF cavities and can be repeatedly accelerated in the high-gradient fields in many SRF cavities. Results of MARS15 Monte Carlo calculations, performed for the current main linac tunnel design, reveal that the prompt dose design level of 25 μSv/hr in the service tunnel can be provided by a 2.3-m thick concrete wall between the main and service tunnels.
