Benchmarks in Leipzig

Between April 1 and May 15, 2026, a group of 49 mathematicians compiled a dataset of research-level mathematics questions with known answers. Most of the work was done during the three-day workshop Benchmarks in Leipzig with 35 participants at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig, Germany. We present the resulting collection of 100~questions. We evaluated these questions in three stages: a single attempt by five state-of-the-art LLMs and their predecessors, followed by a 20-runs-per-model evaluation with three of these models, and finally a 3-run attempt with two heavy-thinking models. After Stage 1, 41 questions remained completely unsolved; after Stage 2, this count dropped to 16; and we concluded Stage 3 with only 2 unsolved questions. This demonstrates that the mathematical reasoning capabilities of LLMs are becoming impressive. In September 2026, we added a fourth stage in which the next generation of models attempted all 100 questions once more, after which only 1 question remains unsolved.

Border rank=rank for Kruskal tensors and a Kruskal's theorem for skew decompositions

We show that border rank is equal to rank for Kruskal tensors. We also give an analogous Kruskal condition for alternating tensors, which certifies uniqueness of skew rank decompositions. Furthermore, we show that border skew rank is equal to skew rank for alternating Kruskal tensors, and we give an algorithm to find the minimum skew rank decomposition of alternating Kruskal tensors.

Moment-sos and spectral hierarchies for polynomial optimization on the sphere and quantum de Finetti theorems

We revisit the convergence analysis of two approximation hierarchies for polynomial optimization on the unit sphere. The first one is based on the moment-sos approach and gives semidefinite bounds for which Fang and Fawzi (2021) showed an analysis in $O(1/r^2)$ for the r-th level bound, using the polynomial kernel method. The second hierarchy was recently proposed by Lovitz and Johnston (2023) and gives spectral bounds for which they show a convergence rate in $O(1/r)$, using a quantum de Finetti theorem of Christandl et al. (2007) that applies to complex Hermitian matrices with a "double" symmetry. We investigate links between these approaches, in particular, via duality of moments and sums of squares. Our main results include showing that the spectral bounds cannot have a convergence rate better than $O(1/r^2)$ and that they do not enjoy generic finite convergence. In addition, we propose alternative performance analyses that involve explicit constants depending on intrinsic parameters of the optimization problem. For this we develop a novel "banded" real de Finetti theorem that applies to real matrices with "double" symmetry. We also show how to use the polynomial kernel method to obtain a de Finetti type result in $O(1/r^2)$ for real maximally symmetric matrices, improving an earlier result in $O(1/r)$ of Doherty and Wehner (2012).

A linear-time algorithm for Chow decompositions

We propose a linear-time algorithm to compute low-rank Chow decompositions. Our algorithm can decompose concise symmetric 3-tensors in n variables of Chow rank n/3. The algorithm is pencil based, hence it relies on generalized eigenvalue computations. We also develop sub-quadratic time algorithms for higher order Chow decompositions, and Chow decompositions of 3-tensors into products of linear forms which do not lie on the generic orbit. In particular, we obtain a sub-quadratic-time algorithm for decomposing a symmetric 3-tensor into a linear combination of W-tensors.

Nondefectivity of invariant secant varieties

We show that a large class of secant varieties is nondefective. In particular, we positively resolve most cases of the Baur-Draisma-de Graaf conjecture on Grassmannian secants in large dimensions. Our result improves the known bounds on nondefectivity for various other secant varieties, including Chow varieties, Segre-Veronese varieties and Gaussian moment varieties. We also give bounds for identifiability and the generic ranks.

Gaussian Mixture Identifiability from degree 6 Moments

We resolve most cases of identifiability from sixth-order moments for Gaussian mixtures on spaces of large dimensions. Our results imply that the parameters of a generic mixture of $ m\leq\mathcal{O}(n^4) $ Gaussians on $ \mathbb R^n $ can be uniquely recovered from the mixture moments of degree 6. The constant hidden in the $ \mathcal{O} $-notation is optimal and equals the one in the upper bound from counting parameters. We give an argument that degree-4 moments never suffice in any nontrivial case, and we conduct some numerical experiments indicating that degree 5 is minimal for identifiability.

Unique powers-of-forms decompositions from simple Gram spectrahedra

We consider simultaneous Waring decompositions: Given forms $ f_d $ of degrees $ kd $, $ (d = 2,3 )$, which admit a representation as $ d $-th power sums of $ k $-forms $ q_1,\ldots,q_m $, when is it possible to reconstruct the addends $ q_1,\ldots,q_m $ from the power sums $ f_d $? Such powers-of-forms decompositions model the moment problem for mixtures of centered Gaussians. The novel approach of this paper is to use semidefinite programming in order to perform a reduction to tensor decomposition. The proposed method works on typical parameter sets at least as long as $ m\leq n-1 $, where $ m $ is the rank of the decomposition and $ n $ is the number of variables. While provably not tight, this analysis still gives the currently best known rank threshold for decomposing third order powers-of-forms, improving on previous work in both asymptotics and constant factors. Our algorithm can produce proofs of uniqueness for specific decompositions. A numerical study is conducted on Gaussian random trace-free quadratics, giving evidence that the success probability converges to $ 1 $ in an average case setting, as long as $ m = n $ and $ n\to \infty $. Some evidence is given that the algorithm also succeeds on instances of rank $ m = Θ(n^2) $.

Identifiability for mixtures of centered Gaussians and sums of powers of quadratics

We consider the inverse problem for the polynomial map which sends an $m$-tuple of quadratic forms in $n$ variables to the sum of their $d$-th powers. This map captures the moment problem for mixtures of $m$ centered $n$-variate Gaussians. In the first non-trivial case $d = 3$, we show that for any $ n\in \mathbb N $, this map is generically one-to-one (up to permutations of $ q_1,\ldots, q_m $ and third roots of unity) in two ranges: $m\le {n\choose 2} + 1 $ for $n \leq 16$ and $ m\le {n+5 \choose 6}/{n+1 \choose 2}-{n+1 \choose 2}-1$ for $n > 16$, thus proving generic identifiability for mixtures of centered Gaussians from their (exact) moments of degree at most $ 6 $. The first result is obtained by studying the explicit geometry of the tangential contact locus of the variety of sums of cubes of quadratic forms at concrete points, while the second result is accomplished using a link between secant non-defectivity with identifiability. The latter approach generalizes also to sums of $ d $-th powers of $k$-forms for $d \geq 3$ and $k \geq 2$.

Ideals of Spaces of Degenerate Matrices

The variety $ \mathrm{Sing}_{n, m} $ consists of all tuples $ X = (X_1,\ldots, X_m) $ of $ n\times n $ matrices such that every linear combination of $ X_1,\ldots, X_m $ is singular. Equivalently, $X\in\mathrm{Sing}_{n,m}$ if and only if $\det(λ_1 X_1 + \ldots + λ_m X_m) = 0$ for all $ λ_1,\ldots, λ_m\in \mathbb Q $. Makam and Wigderson asked whether the ideal generated by these equations is always radical, that is, if any polynomial identity that is valid on $ \mathrm{Sing}_{n, m} $ lies in the ideal generated by the polynomials $\det(λ_1 X_1 + \ldots + λ_m X_m)$. We answer this question in the negative by determining the vanishing ideal of $ \mathrm{Sing}_{2, m} $ for all $ m\in \mathbb N $. Our results exhibit that there are additional equations arising from the tensor structure of $ X $. More generally, for any $ n $ and $ m\ge n^2 - n + 1 $, we prove there are equations vanishing on $ \mathrm{Sing}_{n, m} $ that are not in the ideal generated by polynomials of type $\det(λ_1 X_1 + \ldots + λ_m X_m)$. Our methods are based on classical results about Fano schemes, representation theory and Gröbner bases.

A new Algorithm for Overcomplete Tensor Decomposition based on Sums-of-Squares Optimisation

In this thesis, a new class of algorithms based on Sums of Squares Programming is developed. These allow to reduce a degree-$d$ homogeneous polynomial $T = \sum_{i = 1}^m \langle a_i, X \rangle^d $ to a quadratic form being close to a rank-$1$ form via a low-degree reduction polynomial $W\in\sum \mathbb{R}[X]^2$. $W$ can be thought of as a `weight function' attaining high values on merely one of the components $a_i$. The component can then be extracted by running an eigenvalue decomposition on the quadratic form $\sum_{i=1}^m W(a_i) \langle a_i, X \rangle^2$.
