Holographic correlators from multi-mode AdS$_5$ bubbling geometries

Supergravity calculations of holographic four-point correlation functions are a powerful tool for deriving dynamical information about the dual field theory at strong coupling. Recently, a number of such computations have been performed by studying light probes of smooth horizonless supergravity solutions, including certain asymptotically AdS$_5 \times$S$^5$ solutions of Lin-Lunin-Maldacena (LLM) type. We construct a new closed-form perturbative LLM solution involving a pair of linearized supergravitons with different mode numbers and their quadratic backreaction. Using this solution, we compute two infinite sequences of four-point correlators. Depending on the scaling of certain parameters, the background supergravity solutions are dual to states of 4D $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory that are either heavy or light, whereupon the correlators in the dual field theory are either (perturbatively) heavy-heavy-light-light or all-light. In the all-light regime, the correlators we compute are related by superconformal Ward identities to correlators of four single-particle chiral primary operators (CPOs). We confirm a set of expressions in the literature for such correlators of CPOs, that were obtained via Mellin space bootstrap and/or Witten diagram methods. We also obtain a new explicit compact expression for one of the two infinite sequences of correlators of chiral primaries. The method we present is capable of accessing correlators with an arbitrary degree of extremality.

Precision holography of AdS$_5$ bubbling geometries

Holographic duality provides a microscopic interpretation of asymptotically Anti-de Sitter supergravity solutions. The dual states of the field theory give rise to expectation values of light operators. These expectation values correspond to coefficients in the asymptotic expansion of gauge-invariant combinations of supergravity fields. We consider the duality between type IIB theory on AdS$_5 \times $S$^5$ and 4D $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory, focusing on the half-BPS sector. We clarify the structure of the precision holographic dictionary, making explicit the distinction between single-trace operators and single-particle operators, where the latter contain admixtures of multi-traces. We rewrite the holographic dictionary for half-BPS operators of dimension four in the single-particle basis. We then apply this dictionary to perform precision holographic studies of two different smooth supergravity solutions in the class derived by Lin, Lunin and Maldacena, that have been recently used to compute all-light four-point correlators by making extrapolations of heavy-light correlators.

Four-point correlators in N=4 SYM from AdS$_5$ bubbling geometries

Four-point correlation functions are observables of significant interest in holographic field theories. We compute an infinite family of four-point correlation functions of operators in short multiplets of 4D N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in the supergravity regime, by studying the quadratic fluctuations around non-trivial supergravity backgrounds. The supergravity backgrounds are supersymmetric smooth geometries in the family derived by Lin, Lunin and Maldacena. The light probes comprise an infinite sequence of Kaluza-Klein harmonics of the dilaton/axion. For generic parameter values, the supergravity backgrounds are dual to heavy CFT states. However we focus on the limit in which the dual CFT states become light single-particle states. The resulting all-light four-point correlators are related by superconformal Ward identities to previously known four-point correlators of half-BPS chiral primary operators. By verifying that the Ward identities are satisfied, we confirm the validity of the supergravity method.

The CFT$_6$ origin of all tree-level 4-point correlators in AdS$_3 \times S^3$

We provide strong evidence that all tree-level 4-point holographic correlators in AdS$_3 \times S^3$ are constrained by a hidden 6D conformal symmetry. This property has been discovered in the AdS$_5 \times S^5$ context and noticed in the tensor multiplet subsector of the AdS$_3 \times S^3$ theory. Here we extend it to general AdS$_3 \times S^3$ correlators which contain also the chiral primary operators of spin zero and one that sit in the gravity multiplet. The key observation is that the 6D conformal primary field associated with these operators is not a scalar but a self-dual $3$-form primary. As an example, we focus on the correlators involving two fields in the tensor multiplets and two in the gravity multiplet and show that all such correlators are encoded in a conformal 6D correlator between two scalars and two self-dual $3$-forms, which is determined by three functions of the cross ratios. We fix these three functions by comparing with the results of the simplest correlators derived from an explicit supergravity calculation.

BTZ Trailing Strings

We compute holographically the energy loss of a moving quark in various states of the D1-D5 CFT. In the dual bulk geometries, the quark is the end of a trailing string, and the profile of this string determines the drag force exerted by the medium on the quark. We find no drag force when the CFT state has no momentum, and a nontrivial force for any value of the velocity (even at rest) when the string extends in the supersymmetric D1-D5-P black-hole geometry, or a horizonless microstate geometry thereof. As the length of the throat of the microstate geometry increases, the drag force approaches the thermal BTZ expression, confirming the ability of these microstate geometries to capture typical black-hole physics. We also find that when the D1-D5-P black hole is non-extremal, there is a special value of the velocity at which a moving quark feels no force. We compute this velocity holographically and we compare it to the velocity computed in the CFT.

Holographic correlators in AdS$_3$ without Witten diagrams

We present a formula for the holographic 4-point correlators in AdS$_3 \times S^3$ involving four single-trace operators of dimension $k, k, l, l$. As an input we use the supergravity results for the Heavy-Heavy-Light-Light correlators that can be derived by studying the linear fluctuations around known asymptotically AdS$_3 \times S^3$ geometries. When the operators of dimension $k$ and $l$ are in the same multiplet there are contributions due to the exchange of single-trace operators in the $t$ and $u$ channels, which are not captured by the approach mentioned above. However by rewriting the $s$-channel results in Mellin space we obtain a compact expression for the $s$-channel contribution that makes it possible to conjecture a formula for the complete result. We discuss some consistency checks that our proposal meets.

The Structure of BPS Equations for Ambi-polar Microstate Geometries

Ambi-polar metrics, defined so as to allow the signature to change from +4 to -4 across hypersurfaces, are a mainstay in the construction of BPS microstate geometries. This paper elucidates the cohomology of these spaces so as to simplify greatly the construction of infinite families of fluctuating harmonic magnetic fluxes. It is argued that such fluxes should come from scalar, harmonic pre-potentials whose source loci are holomorphic divisors. This insight is obtained by exploring the Kahler structure of ambi-polar Gibbons-Hawking spaces and it is shown that differentiating the pre-potentials with respect to Kahler moduli yields solutions to the BPS equations for the electric potentials sourced by the magnetic fluxes. This suggests that harmonic analysis on ambi-polar spaces has a novel, and an extremely rich structure, that is deeply intertwined with the BPS equations. We illustrate our results using a family of two-centered solutions.

BPS equations and Non-trivial Compactifications

We consider the problem of finding exact, eleven-dimensional, BPS supergravity solutions in which the compactification involves a non-trivial Calabi-Yau manifold, ${\cal Y}$, as opposed to simply a $T^6$. Since there are no explicitly-known metrics on non-trivial, compact Calabi-Yau manifolds, we use a non-compact "local model" and take the compactification manifold to be ${\cal Y} = {\cal M}_{GH} \times T^2$ where ${\cal M}_{GH}$ is a hyper-Kähler, Gibbons-Hawking ALE space. We focus on backgrounds with three electric charges in five dimensions and find exact families of solutions to the BPS equations that have the same four supersymmetries as the three-charge black hole. Our exact solution to the BPS system requires that the Calabi-Yau manifold be fibered over the space-time using compensators on ${\cal Y}$. The role of the compensators is to ensure smoothness of the eleven-dimensional metric when the moduli of ${\cal Y}$ depend on the space-time. The Maxwell field Ansatz also implicitly involves the compensators through the frames of the fibration. We examine the equations of motion and discuss the brane distributions on generic internal manifolds that do not have enough symmetry to allow smearing.

Supersymmetry and Wrapped Branes in Microstate Geometries

We consider the supergravity back-reaction of M2 branes wrapping around the space-time cycles in 1/8-BPS microstate geometries. We show that such brane wrappings will generically break all the supersymmetries. In particular, all the supersymmetries will be broken if there are such wrapped branes but the net charge of the wrapped branes is zero. We show that if M2 branes wrap a single cycle, or if they wrap a several of co-linear cycles with the same orientation, then the solution will be 1/16-BPS, having two supersymmetries. We comment on how these results relate to using W-branes to understand the microstate structure of 1/8-BPS black holes.

Tidal Stresses and Energy Gaps in Microstate Geometries

We compute energy gaps and study infalling massive geodesic probes in the new families of scaling, microstate geometries that have been constructed recently and for which the holographic duals are known. We find that in the deepest geometries, which have the lowest energy gaps, the geodesic deviation shows that the stress reaches the Planck scale long before the probe reaches the cap of the geometry. Such probes must therefore undergo a stringy transition as they fall into microstate geometry. We discuss the scales associated with this transition and comment on the implications for scrambling in microstate geometries.

$\mathcal{N}=2$ Supersymmetric Janus Solutions and Flows: From Gauged Supergravity to M Theory

We investigate a family of SU(3)$\times$U(1)$\times$U(1)-invariant holographic flows and Janus solutions obtained from gauged $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity in four dimensions. We give complete details of how to use the uplift formulae to obtain the corresponding solutions in M theory. While the flow solutions appear to be singular from the four-dimensional perspective, we find that the eleven-dimensional solutions are much better behaved and give rise to interesting new classes of compactification geometries that are smooth, up to orbifolds, in the infra-red limit. Our solutions involve new phases in which M2 branes polarize partially or even completely into M5 branes. We derive the eleven-dimensional supersymmetries and show that the eleven-dimensional equations of motion and BPS equations are indeed satisfied as a consequence of their four-dimensional counterparts. Apart from elucidating a whole new class of eleven-dimensional Janus and flow solutions, our work provides extensive and highly non-trivial tests of the recently-derived uplift formulae.

Flowing to Higher Dimensions: A New Strongly-Coupled Phase on M2 Branes

We describe a one-parameter family of new holographic RG flows that start from $AdS_4 \times S^7$ and go to $\widehat{AdS_5} \times {\cal B}_6$, where ${\cal B}_6$ is conformal to a Kähler manifold and $\widehat{AdS_5}$ is Poincaré $AdS_5$ with one spatial direction compactified and fibered over ${\cal B}_6$. The new solutions "flow up dimensions," going from the $(2+1)$-dimensional conformal field theory on M2 branes in the UV to a $(3+1)$-dimensional field theory on intersecting M5 branes in the infra-red. The M2 branes completely polarize into M5 branes along the flow and the Poincaré sections of the $\widehat{AdS_5}$ are the $(3+1)$-dimensional common intersection of the M5 branes. The emergence of the extra dimension in the infra-red suggests a new strongly-coupled phase of the M2 brane and ABJM theories in which charged solitons are becoming massless. The flow solution is first analyzed by finding a four-dimensional $N \! = \! 2$ supersymmetric flow in $N \! = \! 8$ gauged supergravity. This is then generalized to a one parameter family of non-supersymmetric flows. The infra-red limit of the solutions appears to be quite singular in four dimensions but the uplift to eleven-dimensional supergravity is remarkable and regular (up to orbifolding). Our construction is a non-trivial application of the recently derived uplift formulae for fluxes, going well beyond the earlier constructions of stationary points solutions. The eleven-dimensional supersymmetry is also analyzed and shows how, for the supersymmetric flow, the M2-brane supersymmetry in the UV is polarized entirely into M5-brane supersymmetry in the infra-red.
