On $\lam$-existence over a predicate

We prove that in a countable theory $T$ fully stable over a predicate $P$, any $\lam$-complete set $A$ has the $\lam$-existence property. This means that $A$ can be extended to a $\lam$-saturated model of $T$ without changing the $P$-part. The notion of $\lam$-completeness, introduced in this paper, captures some obvious necessary conditions for such an extension to be possible (for example, the $P$-part of $A$ has to be a $\lam$-saturated model of the appropriate theory). So in a fully stable theory $T$, $\lam$-existence can only fail for trivial reasons. This generalizes results of Chatzidakis in the context of difference fields of characteristic 0.

Stable amalgamation over a predicate and the Gaifman property

We consider the following property of a first order theory T with a distinguished unary predicate P: every model of the theory of P occurs as the P-part of some model of T. We call this property the Gaifman property. Gaifman conjectured that if T is relatively categorical over P, then it has the Gaifman property. We propose a generalized version of this conjecture: if T fails the Gaifman property, then it exhibits non-structure over P, i.e., has many non-isomorphic models over P in many cardinalities. We address this conjecture for countable theories. Motivated by ideas from Classification Theory, we separate this conjecture into two parts: 1) stability over P (a structure property of theories) implies the Gaifman property, and 2) instability over P implies non-structure. In this paper prove the first part of this conjecture. In fact, we prove a stronger statement: an appropriate version of stability implies higher stable amalgamation properties.

On the existence property over a predicate

We prove that in a countable theory T fully stable over a predicate P, any complete set A has the existence property. This means that A can be extended to a model of T without changing the P-part. In particular, T has the Gaifman property: any model of P occurs as the P-part of some model of T. This generalizes results of Lachlan (on stable theories), Hodges (on relatively categorical abelian groups), and Afshordel (on difference fields of characteristic 0).

Stability over a predicate and prime closure

We prove that in a theory $T$ stable over a predicate $P$, for any $\lambda > |T|$, there is a $\lambda$-prime model over any complete set A with a $\lambda$-saturated $P$-part.

On sample complexity of neural networks

We consider functions defined by deep neural networks as definable objects in an o-miminal expansion of the real field, and derive an almost linear (in the number of weights) bound on sample complexity of such networks.

Generic wide indiscernible sets

We prove that a wide Morley sequence in a wide generically stable type is isometric to the standard basis of an $\ell_p$ space for some $p$.

Classification over a predicate -- the general case. Part I -- structure theory

We begin a systematic development of structure theory for a first order theory, which is stable over a monadic predicate. We show that stability over a predicate implies quantifier free definability of types over stable sets, introduce an independence notion and explore its properties, prove stable amalgamation results, and show that every type over a model, orthogonal to the predicate, is generically stable.

Strict independence

We investigate the notions of strict independence and strict non-forking, and establish basic properties and connections between the two. In particular it follows from our investigation that in resilient theories strict non-forking is symmetric. Based on this study, we develop notions of weight which characterize NTP2, dependence and strong dependence. Many of our proofs rely on careful analysis of sequences that witness dividing. We prove simple characterizations of such sequences in resilient theories, as well as of Morley sequences which are witnesses. As a by-product we obtain information on types co-dominated by generically stable types in dependent theories. For example, we prove that every Morley sequence in such a type is a witness.

Minimal types in stable Banach spaces

We prove existence of wide types in a continuous theory expanding a Banach space, and density of minimal wide types among stable types in such a theory. We show that every minimal wide stable type is "generically" isometric to an l_2 space. We conclude with a proof of the following formulation of Henson's Conjecture: every model of an uncountably categorical theory expanding a Banach space is prime over a spreading model, isometric to the standard basis of a Hilbert space.

Additivity of the dp-rank

The main result of this article is sub-additivity of the dp-rank. We also show that the study of theories of finite dp-rank can not be reduced to the study of its dp-minimal types, and discuss the possible relations between dp-rank and VC-density.

Morley sequences in dependent theories

We characterize nonforking (Morley) sequences in dependent theories in terms of a generalization of Poizat's special sequences and show that average types of Morley sequences are stationary over their domains. We characterize generically stable types in terms of the structure of the "eventual" type. We then study basic properties of "strict Morley sequences", based on Shelah's notion of strict nonforking. In particular we prove "Kim's lemma" for such sequences, and a weak version of local character.

Unstable classes of metric structures

We prove a strong non-structure theorem for a class of metric structures with an unstable pair of formulae. As a consequence, we show that weak categoricity (that is, categoricity up to isomorphisms and not isometries) implies several versions of stability. This is the first step in the direction of the investigation of weak categoricity and weak stability of metric classes.

Generic separable metric structures

We compare three notions of genericity of separable metric structures. Our analysis provides a general model theoretic technique of showing that structures are generic in descriptive set theoretic (topological) sense and in measure theoretic sense. In particular, it gives a new perspective on Vershik's theorems on genericity and randomness of Urysohn's space among separable metric spaces.

Continuous first order logic and local stability

We develop continuous first order logic, a variant of the logic described in \cite{Chang-Keisler:ContinuousModelTheory}. We show that this logic has the same power of expression as the framework of open Hausdorff cats, and as such extends Henson's logic for Banach space structures. We conclude with the development of local stability, for which this logic is particularly well-suited.
